Bottom Line
The Pentax K-3 is the most refined K-mount SLR to date, offering fast autofocus and superb image quality. Its video autofocus implementation isn't the best, but it still manages to snag our Editors' Choice award.
The K-3 ($1,299.95 direct, body only) takes a lot of what Pentax
are known for&robust weather sealing, excellent control layout, and fantastic high ISO image quality&and couples it with the best-yet Pentax autofocus system and an impressive burst shooting mode. When coupled with a weather-resistant lens it's a go-anywhere 24-megapixel SLR that is capable of capturing outstanding images. It's not perfect&video autofocus is speedier than we've seen in past Pentaxes, but you'll have to initiate it manually, and the camera is a little slow to start and grab a shot compared with some others in this class. But those minor complaints aren't enough to keep the K-3 down. We think it's a better camera than our previous winner in the high-end APS-C SLR category, the , and that makes the K-3 our Editors' Choice.

Design and Features The K-3 is on the small side for a camera of this class, measuring 3.9 by 5.2 by 3.1 inches and weighing 1.8 pounds without a lens. It's a little heavier than the
(1.7 pounds), but the 70D is bigger at 4.1 by 5.5 by 3.1 inches. The added weight is likely due to the K-3' every button and port is protected against dust and splashes. When you pair it with a sealed lens, like the
it can be used safely in the elements. It's not submersible, though, so don't take it scuba diving.
The viewfinder is a solid glass pentaprism that covers 100 percent of the frame with 0.95x magnification. This essentially matches the excellent finder found in the Nikon D7100, which covers 100 percent of the frame with 0.94x magnification. The Canon 70D lags behind with 98 percent coverage, and Sony uses an electronic viewfinder in its top-end , which delivers a decidedly different user experience. If you take advantage of the K-3's in-camera distortion correction you'll want to take a little care when framing images tightly, as that correction can slightly narrow the field of view of the attached lens. It's applied to JPG images only, so it's not a concern if you're working in Raw.
The K-3's body is rife with physical control options that will make demanding photographers happy, but there are a few changes that veteran Pentax shooters should note. The company puts a few controls on the left side of the camera, adjacent to the lens mount, including a toggle switch to change between manual and autofocus operation, a button to adjust the autofocus mode, and the programmable Raw/Fx button that can be used to toggle Raw image capture or reprogrammed to perform other functions. Previous top-end models, like the
combined the functions of the focus toggle switch and the focus mode button into a three stage switch with AF-S, AF-C, and MF positions.
The top plate features a locking mode dial&you can set it to freely turn at all times, or lock it so a button needs to be pressed to change the shooting mode. The power switch, with integrated depth of field preview, shutter release, front control dial, and buttons to adjust exposure compensation and ISO are at the top right of the camera, integrated into the handgrip. There's also a monochrome information LCD that shows the active settings.
Running along the top of the rear of the camera, there's the standard Play button for image playback and a button to adjust the metering pattern. The metering pattern control is another one that's new to the K-3; the K-5 IIs used a toggle switch to control that function, but that space on the body is now occupied by the mode dial locking mechanism. To the right of the eyepiece you'll find the Live View/Record button, the rear control dial, the Autofocus button, and the Autoexposure Lock (AE-L) button.
Below that, to the right of the LCD, is the Green button (it handles a variety of functions when used in conjunction with other controls, including enabling auto ISO selection and resetting to default program shooting options), and a toggle switch to change between still and video modes. You get four directional buttons that can be used to move the active focus point and na they double as controls for the drive mode, white balance, flash mode, and color output. The button to control their function is just below and to the right of the directional pad. There are also the standard OK, Menu, and Info buttons. There are two IR sensors on the camera, one on the rear and one on the grip, so that you can use a wireless remote to trigger the shutter.
The rear LCD is a fixed 3.2-inch panel with an impressive 1,037,000k-dot resolution. Its design is gapless, so there's no layer of air between the LCD and the protective glass cover, and it's very sharp and bright to the eye. But it's not hinged like thee displays on the more-video-oriented Canon EOS 70D or Sony Alpha 77. You'll notice that underneath the LCD is the Ricoh brand name, rather than the traditional Pentax. Pentax cameras are now sold under the Ricoh I Ricoh acquired Pentax in 2011, but is only recently rolled the Pentax brand under the Ricoh banner.
There's no Wi-Fi or GPS here, which isn't uncommon for this class of camera, but Canon did put Wi-Fi into its 70D, and Sony's Alpha 77 features a GPS. The K-3 is compatible with the
memory card, and its dual card slots make it possible to record Raw images to a fast SD card in one slot and JPGs to an Eye-Fi card in its second slot.
If you want more functionality than the Eye-Fi Mobi can provide, consider Pentax's 16GB FluCard Pro ($99.95); it supports both JPG file transfer and remote control via a Web browser. The browser approach eliminates the need for a dedicated app, so you can take control of the K-3 even if you're using a laptop, or a platform like Windows Phone that doesn't enjoy&as much app support as iOS and Android. It broadcasts its own network SSID; you can set the network name and password via your browser.
When using the FluCard to control the K-3 remotely you'll have access to a basic control mode that lets you select a focus point and fire the shutter. You can switch this to advanced mode, which gives you more control, including the shutter speed, aperture, exposure compensation, and ISO. The Live View feed is smooth, with very little lag or choppiness. Image transfer is supported, but only for JPG format and only for images stored on the FluCard itself. The K-3 has two card slots, so if you're normally a Raw shooter you can set the camera to save images to a standard memory card in the primary slot&and JPG copies to the FluCard in the secondary slot. The K-3 also supports in-camera Raw development, so you can always convert a Raw image to JPG using that interface in order to transfer it over to your phone, tablet, or computer.
