【问】 编辑老师，您好！我前两天看一本课外书，看见里面的Father之前没有加定冠词，我记得老师曾经讲过，father, mother等是普通名词，前面要加定冠词表示特指，为什么这里没有加呢？（安徽省庐江县乐桥中学高一（2）班 高园园）
【答】 一般来说，表示亲属的名词，如：father, mother, uncle, sister等是要加冠词的。例如：
The father is the fattest of the family. 爸爸是全家中最胖的。
You have been like a father to me. 你一直像父亲一样待我。
但是， 在家庭成员中称呼自己的亲属时， 可以不用冠词， 第一个字母要大写，这样的词通常被看成是专有名词。如：
Mother is laid up with a cold. 妈妈感冒了，卧床不起。

第二道不能加the麽？
American可以作形容词，这是自然不加冠词。例如：
The chain-store is American.
但表示单个的人，一般要加冠词。
复数名词一般不加冠词。相信你从语法书上能够查证到这些用法。
