School life in the UK
Going to a British high school for one year1was a very enjoyable and exciting experience2or me. I was very happy with3the school hours in Britain because school starts4around 9 a.m. and ends6about 3:30 p.m. This means6I could get up an hour later than usual7as schools in China begin before 8 a.m.
On8the first day, all students went to attend 9 assembly. I sat next to a girl whose name was Diane. We soon became best friends. During assembly, the headmaster told us about the rules of the school. He also told us that the best way to (10) earn respect11from the school was to work hard and achieve12high grades. This sounded like (13)my school in China.
I had many teachers in the past year and they each taught only one subject. Mr. Heywood was my class teacher. My favorite teacher was Miss Burke. She was the teacher who taught us English Literature. In our class there were 29 students. This is about the average (14) size for British schools. We had to move to different classrooms for different classes. We also had different students in some classes, so it (15) was difficult to remember all the faces and names.
I found the homework was not as heavy as what (16) I used to (17)get in my old school, but it was a bit (18) challenging (19) for me at first because all the homework was in English. I felt lucky as all my teachers were very helpful and I enjoyed all my subjects: English, History, English Literature, Computer Science, Maths, Science, PE, Art, Cooking and French.
My English improved (20) a lot as I used English every day and spend (21)an hour each day reading English books in the library. I usually wet to the Computer Club at lunchtime, so I could e-mail my family and friends back home for free. I also had an extra (22) French class on Tuesday evenings. Cooking was really fun as I learned how to (23) buy, prepare (24) and cook food. At the end of term we held a class party and we all had to cook something. I was glad that all my classmates enjoyed the cake that I made.
Students at school have to study Maths, English and Science, but can drop (25) some subjects if they don’t like them, for example (26) , History, French and Art. They can choose& other subjects like Woodwork, Computer Science or Languages such as Spanish and German. In Woodwork class I made a small table. Though (27) it didn’t look like a table when it was finished, I still liked it very much.
I missed(28) Chinese food a lot at lunchtime. British food is very different. British people eat a lot of desserts after their main meal. After lunch, we usually played on the school field. Sometimes (29) I played football with the boys. Sometimes I just relaxed under a tree or sat on the glass.
I was very lucky to experience this different way of life. And I really hope (30) that someday I can go back and study in Manchester again.
Project& Starting a new school club
We have a radio club in our school. It is great because it is run (1) by the students for the school. I am lucky as I am one of the hosts.
& It was started two years ago as CD players were not allowed (2) in school. One day, I just began thinking about music for everyone, so I asked the headmaster if music could be played during break time. He approved (3) the idea, and two years later I am the oldest student member of the radio club.
& Our club is much more than just music. Every morning we tell students about the weather and recent news, plus some special messages that the teachers want us to broadcast.
& During exam time we have a special programme that tells the students the things they should or shouldn’t do for preparation. At the end of the school year, many students who are graduating use our club to give messages to their close friends and teachers.
& When parents come to visit the school and talk to the teachers in the evening, we always play songs sung by students, and we also give special messages to inform the parents of events such as outing and school plays.
& I am graduating soon, I shall miss the radio club, but I know that it will continue without me. (Kate Jones)
Our school club ‘Poets of the Next Generation’ was started by our English teacher Mr Owen. We meet on the last Friday of every month to talk about poems and poets that we like. When we meet, we first select (4) poems that we love, and then read them out loud. We do this in a group and listen to each other talking about poems in our group meetings.
&&When I attended the first meeting, I was required (5) to write a poem and I have to read it out to the group. It was a little scary at first, but everyone was so nice and friendly that (6) I soon stopped worrying. I once read a poem about nature in our school garden. I choose an old tree and circled everyone around it before I read. The group said it was one of the best poems they had heard. ( Bob Shaw)
Unit 2 Home alone
Mom and Dad arrive back from vacation a day earlier than expected. The curtains are closed and the living room is dark when Morn and Dad enter.
Dad:& It's so nice to be home!
Mom:&& Yes, I can't wait to surprise the boys!
Suddenly a door opens and a soccer ball flies through the room. Eric runs in after it, followed by a big dog, walking very slowly,
Eric:& Mom! Dad! You're back early! (looking around room, sounding frightened ) But, but ... you weren't supposed to come home until tomorrow!
The dog slowly walks to Mom and Dad.
Mom:&& (bending to touch dog) Eric, he's so tired and hungry! (looking at table) The money with which you were to buy dog food is gone, but Spot looks so hungry! What did you do with the money we left ?
Dad:& And look at this room--trash all over the place! Where is your brother? (shouting angrily) Daniel!
Daniel:& (running into room) Morn, Dad, I can explain ...
Dad opens the curtains and light comes into the room. The room is a mess, with pizza boxes on the floor and dirty dishes in the sink. There are pieces of garbage and waste paper around the trash can.
Morn and Dad both turn towards Daniel.
Dad:& (sounding very angry) Listen to me young man--remember the day when we left you in charge? We thought you could act likean adult! I don't know the reason why the house is so dirty ...
Morn:&& Daniel, we thought you were an adult, a person from whom we could expect good decisions ...
Dad:& Whom we could trust! This is not a family where bad behavior goes unpunished and you ...
Daniel:& (shouting) Stop shouting at me. I'm still a teenager! Why is everything always my fault?
Daniel runs into his bedroom and slams the door: Morn and Dad look at each other as lights go out.
End of act one
Act two, scene one
Daniel and Eric's bedroom. Eric sits on his bed looking at Daniel, who has his arms crossed and looks angry.
Daniel:& They never even gave me a chance to explain, i hate them!
Eric:& You don't hate them. I can tell them what happened. Then they won't be mad anymore.
Daniel:& No, don't tell them anything. They didn't trust me. They don't deserve to know the truth. Let them think what they want.
Eric:& But Daniel, if they knew that Spot was ill and we used the money to take him to the vet ...
Daniel:& And that we spent all of yesterday waiting there for him and that is why we had no time to clean the house ... but no Eric, why didn't they ask me what happened instead of shouting at me?
Act two, scene two
Mom:& Do you think we were too hard on Daniel? Perhaps something happened ... maybe we should go and ask him.
Dad:& Maybe, but now that he has been so rude to us, I feel like we have to punish him or he won't respect us.
Mom:&& Oh, why does this have to be so difficult?

Project Writing an advice letter
Many people in families become upset with each other over small problems. Small problems can become big ones, however, if they are not discussed and dealt with early on. What would you do if you were an advice columnist and received the following letters
Dear Mr. Zhu,
I am Writing to your magazine's 'Teenagers Now' column to ask for some help with my16-year-old son. At the moment, he refuses to do almost everything his mother and I ask him to do. He is our only child and we treat him very well. His grandparents buy him many things, and yet he is still rude to us. He refuses to spend time with us or do as we tell him. Sometimes he acts as though he doesn't even love us at all.
Recently he has been refusing to do his homework, and instead insists on wasting his time watching DVDs and listening to foreign music. I cannot understand this music, but I don't like it. He also spends too much time in Internet cafes, where he either plays games or chats online. He is wasting valuable time during this important period in his life!
What am I to do? At present, to prevent upsetting his mother with an argument, I am allowing him his freedom. However, I am worried that if I keep allowing him to do what he wants, he may fail at school, or worse.
How can I help my son without harming our relationship?
&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&Yours sincerely,&&&&&&&&&&&&&
&&& “”16

Dear Mr. Zhu,
I read your magazine every month and I love your 'Teenagers Now' column. I myself am a teenager, almost 17, and have some problems at home that I hope you can help me with.
Mainly, the problem is my father. Whenever I want to do something or suggest an idea, such as a restaurant we can go to for dinner, he doesn't listen to me. Whenever I try to talk to him he just shouts at me. When I refuse to listen to him, he shouts at me and the two of us fight like crazy.
He and my mother always make me do things I don't like such as playing the piano and learning Japanese. Then, when I have some spare time and want to be alone, they call me selfish and unloving!
My father gets very angry when I play foreign music. Also, every time I watch a DVD he sends me to bed or tells me to spend more time studying. He has even forbidden me from meeting my friends online at the Internet oafs!
I love him a lot, but I don't understand why he will not respect the things I want to do. He was once a teenager--he should understand me better than he does.
Yours truly,
