肢体痿癈是指四肢痿软无力，缓纵不收，甚或肌肉萎缩，出现功能障碍或功能丧失而言。《证治准绳》说:&痿者手足痿软而无力，百节缓纵而不收也&。在古代文献中，《内经》称&痿躄&。痿是指肢体痿弱不用，躄指下肢软弱无力，并提出&皮痿&、&肉痿&、&筋痿&、&脉痿&、&骨痿&和五脏痿等不同名称。《金匮要略．中风历节病脉证并治》名曰&枯&。后世医家则均称&痿&。
