FDT技术所带来的好处是多方面，一方面是因为FDT标准的开放性，另一方面是因为其技术理念的创新。自动化领域的现场设备制造商，系统集成商，服务提供商和最终用户都可从中获得巨大的利益。
FDT，开放的平台
为什么欧姆龙，赫优讯以及其他自动化领域的知名厂商如此关注FDT技术，并积极开发相关产品呢？对于这些厂商和他们的用户来说，使用该技术能够带来的最大好处又是什么呢？
规划设计一个工厂，从规划、装配、流线到维护，每个环节都需要从全局的角度考虑如何才能带来最大的经济效益。其关键一点就是，最终用户希望能使用同一个工程环境来管理、操作和配置任何一个现场设备，无论该设备是来自哪个制造商，无论该设备使用的是哪种现场总线或实时以太网通讯协议。
迄今为止，FDT技术是针对现场设备生命周期管理的最开放的平台，能够解决设备规划、安装、操作、配置、维护和资产管理等各种问题。FDT技术覆盖了几乎所有的工业通讯协议，甚至包括了正在开发过程中的协议。只要现场设备支持这些协议，就能采用基于FDT技术的解决方案。
FDT技术能够做到真正意义上的开放，并且提供了一个工具集成环境的最新标准：可集成不同制造商的现场设备，无论该设备是现场总线设备，还是实时以太网设备。
FDT技术作为开放的标准，可以很好地保护投资，简化设备和工具的集成，允许重复使用软件组件，保证软件组件的连续性，支持新的信息技术标准。
一般来说，一种开放的标准可以允许差异性很大的技术提供商都参与到一个公平的竞争环境中。采用FDT技术的现场设备制造商，其技术优势非常显著，可以在不同领域销售其不同类型的产品，并且销售量可观。FDT技术最主要的影响在于，用户所掌握的技术将越来越综合，对设备的操作越来越熟练，对制造商的依赖越来越少。这也是供求关系的一种平衡，最终用户需要摆脱不同制造商所提供的配置工具的困扰，并且可提升产品质量本身的可用性，FDT技术正好满足了用户的这些需求，可实现高级应用的集成。FDT技术将是自动化工业领域的风向标，具有划时代的意义。
FDT，最新的理念
&& FDT是现场设备工具（Field Device
Tool）的缩写，是一种开放、独立、公开的软件接口规范。任何一种通讯协议都可以使用该技术。FDT规范描述了工程框架（FDT容器，FDT
框架应用）和设备软件组件（DTM，设备类型管理器）之间的软件接口和相互关系。其中FDT
框架应用与设备和现场总线系统无关，而DTM则和特定的设备和现场总线相关。这样通过任何一个支持FDT技术的主机系统，就能轻松实现对设备的访问和设备参数的配置。
DTM对于现场设备来说，就是软件代理。它包含，
&设备参数的图形化用户界面（在线和离线）
&参数验证功能
&现场总线系统启动时所需的设备特殊数据
&特殊现场设备的独有诊断功能
&基于现场总线系统的通讯服务 ►（通讯DTM）
&不同现场总线系统间的网关服务 ►（网关DTM）
与协议无关的FDT容器包含，
&通用项目管理工具（用户管理，报告，资产管理）
&总线拓扑工程的图形化用户界面
&总线拓扑数据的通用数据模型
&可持续性服务（项目数据库）
FDT规范的附件中定义了与通讯协议相关的规范。特定协议的XML
Schema都在附件做了标准化，从而提供了在不同的DTM与FDT兼容的框架应用之间进行XML文档通讯的基础。
由于FDT可支持各种现场总线和实时以太网协议，因此每个现场设备制造商都需要提供一种软件组件——DTM（设备类型管理器）和相应的硬件设备，并且能保证这些设备能被很容易的集成到每个FDT/DTM系统环境当中。
DTM用户界面风格指南使得来自不同制造商的DTM都具有统一、友好、易理解的界面。
应用案例，赫优讯Generic DTM在欧姆龙FDT产品中的应用
欧姆龙和赫优讯都是FDT组织的成员，都支持和使用FDT技术，并且都能够向用户提供FDT框架应用程序和DTM。欧姆龙公司是自动化领域的全球领导者之一，能够向用户提供不同的产品和服务，包括工业自动化行业、电子元件行业和医疗行业。赫优讯公司是工业通讯技术的领先供应商，并且也向现场设备制造商和集成商提供FDT/DTM开发服务。
CX-ConfiguratorFDT是欧姆龙公司基于FDT技术的高级多协议网络配置工具，可支持欧姆龙和第三方厂家的现场设备。基于FDT标准，来自不同制造商的DTM都能实现无缝集成。这也使得欧姆龙能够很容易扩展其支持的协议和现场设备，并且能够自由地选择最优的解决方案。
依靠赫优讯公司提供的通用解决方案，欧姆龙公司实现了对不同制造商PROFINET
IO设备的集成。赫优讯提供各种现场总线和实时以太网协议的通用设备DTM，能够根据设备描述文件生成相应的DTM。要实现现场设备在FDT环境中的集成，这是最快的一种方式，并且价格合理。一般来说，赫优讯的通用设备DTM有如下功能
支持PROFINET
IO、PROFIBUS、CANopen、DeviceNet、EtherCAT、SERCOS，并且正在开发更多的协议；
&基于设备描述文件（GSDML，GSD，EDS，ESI，SDDML）；
&可根据客户的需求进行定制；
&可运行于任何一种FDT容器中；
&可与第三方的通讯DTM和设备DTM进行相互操作；
&能够管理来自不同制造商的所有现场设备，并可连接相应的协议。
通过赫优讯为欧姆龙公司定制的PROFINET IO通用设备DTM，欧姆龙的PROFINET IO Controller
DTM能够在CX-ConfiguratorFDT中访问和管理来自不同制造商的几乎所有的PROFINET
IO从站。由于该通用设备DTM遵循了FDT组织定义的DTM用户界面风格指南，因此能够很好的集成在欧姆龙公司的FDT环境中，如下图所示。
