――浅谈英语的译文美
严复（）字又陵，又字几道，福建省候官人。是清末很有影响的资产阶段启蒙思想家，翻译家和教育家，是中国近代史上向西方国家寻找真理的“先进的中国人”之一。他提出“信、达、雅”三字翻译原则。
信：忠实原文；达：通顺流畅；雅：优雅美好。简单的说即：忠实，通顺，美好。
严复提出的“信、达、雅”真可谓是论翻译的“三字真经”，让后来人难再论翻译了。这不能不使人想起李白在黄鹤楼前写的两句搁笔诗“眼前有景道不得，崔颢（cui hao 唐代诗人、政客）题诗在上头。” 既然如此，我们也只好从“信、达、雅”说起，一起看看它对翻译所发挥的指导作用、它的魅力所在。
从狭义上讲，信就是忠实于原作的思想，就是把原文所表达的意思准确地用另一种语言重新表达出来。而广义上讲按科学取其真谛来看，信达雅实际上只留一个“信”字足矣，即“全方位的信”。原文若是表达得通顺流畅就达；原文若故意不达（如描写无文化人的言谈）则不达，此时的不达就是达。原文用的文绉绉的书面语、古语等雅文，译文就要雅；原文若用的是粗话鄙语，译文就要粗而不雅，此时的不雅就是雅。
达，是信达雅中最难“表达”清楚的一个问题。这可从“信达雅”三字的英译中看出。信和雅，基本上公认译为: fidelity（fi’deliti）和elegance。而达的英译却各有千秋: expressiveness, readability, fluency等。难怪九四年山东大学英语专业硕士研究生入学考试里有这样一道汉译英题：“翻译的三字标准：信、达、雅” .
汉语文字是一种逻辑性的，而不是词汇性的，形式的东西很少：词与词之间无分隔，人名地名无大写，动词代词无变形。这些特点有时候会给阅读带来一定困难。这就要求译文的行文通俗易懂、表达清晰。
信和达是对翻译的“硬件要求”，具有科学的精神。对就是对，错就是错。雅是一种“软件要求”，只有感觉或程度上的差别。雅，实际上是一种形式的东西。一个实用性很强的商品（硬件）再配以精美的包装、恰当的宣传和优质的服务（软件），才可以说是一个“成功的商品”。译文亦如此。那么，什么样的译文才能算是“雅”呢? 邱吉尔的一句论述倒是可以借鉴的：Broadly speaking, the short words are the best, and the old words of all.
妙译品味：

有人认为原文是神圣不可侵犯的，译时不可做任何改动，必须字字对应。这种看法理论上是站不住脚的，实践中也是行不通的。翻译本身就意味着改变，尤其是英语和汉语不属于同一语系，差别很大，怎么能“字字对译”得起来呢？更不能“生搬硬套”。
汉语一个“开”字，译成英语需要不下30个词：
