The Mount Rushmore State of South Dakota is situated in the Midwestern region of the United States. With a population of less than one million people living within its 77,000 square mile territory, it’s one of the least densely populated states in the country. South Dakota is probably most famous for the Mount Rushmore National Memorial that was carved out of the granite rock of the Black Hills near Keystone between 1927 and 1941, hence its adoption as the state nickname. The
has been organising competitions for golfers in the state since 1921. In the modern era, it’s now responsible for overseeing the golfing activities of over 100 clubs, from Lemon Country Club in the northwest to Dakota Dunes in the southeast of the state.
For a decade, Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay’s 1991 design at
was undoubtedly the top track in the state then along came a couple of new courses in 2003 to shake things up a little at the top of the rankings. Both the Ron Farris-designed
course in Rapid City and Graham Marsh’s
layout near Agar are fine recent additions to the golfing landscape in South Dakota with the latter, in particular, now gaining deserved national recognition. Our

is probably known best to cross-country travellers for its main attraction, Wall Drug. Advertised on gigantic billboards for hundred of miles to the west and east on Interstate 90, the gargantuan drug store has put Wall on the nation's map. There are also Wall Drug signs all over the world telling how many miles to Wall Drug.
Wall is on Interstate 90 just north of the

, 510 Main St (main exit off the interstate), ? . 6:30AM-6PM daily. In 1931 the store's entrepreneurial owners, Ted and Dorothy Hustead, had the brainstorm idea to give away free icewater for passing motorists. They started to put up signs and billboards along the highway with the distance to Wall Drug. These signs have been spread around the world and to extreme polar reaches. It is joked that based solely on the billboards, future archaeologists will probably consider Wall Drug to be the most important building on the North American continent. From this seed of signs and billboards grew the tourist attraction that Wall Drug is today: giftshops, museums, restaurants, and of course the original drug store.
