以光和粒子的尺寸区分米氏散射和瑞利散射。按粒子同入射波波长（λ）的相对大小不同，可以采用不同的处理方法：当粒子尺度比波长小得多时，可采用比较简单的瑞利散射公式；当粒子尺度与波长可相比拟时，要采用较复杂的米散射公式；当粒子尺度比波长大得多时，则用几何光学处理。把粒子尺度和波长的比例设为x，以如下公式作为判别标准：r是粒子半径；λ是波长；当x&1时，用瑞利散射处理；当x≥1时，用米氏散射处理。
