　　Pencil, a derivative of the Latin word pencillus for &little tail,& originally described a small, fine, pointed brush.
　　N. J. Conte, in 1795, successfully produced pencils, after the later famed Faber family of Nuremberg, Germany, failed to do so, by using apulverizedgraphite base to create a substandard, crude prototype of a pencil. Conte's method, the basic recipe used by all pencil manufacturers today, differed from the failed Faber fiasco, as he groundgraphite, mixed it with certain types of clay, pressed the &dough& into sticks, and finished them in akiln. The Faber family followed suit, and achieved the fame and fortune that previously eluded it.
　　The recipe used by modern pencil manufacturers, calls for dried, ground graphite, a form of carbon, mixed with clay and water in varying proportions. Pencils made with more clay produce a harder pencil, and, conversely, pencils made with more graphite produce a softer pencil. In either case, the ingredients are mixed until they reach adoughyconsistency, and then pass through a forming press, which presses the dough into a pencil thin, smooth, glossy rope. After workers straighten the rope they cut it into the desired lengths, and bake them in industrial ovens.
　　While the mixture is prepared and baked, workers prepare the casing that will house the lead. They shape the wooden casings, made from either red cedar or pine, into halves, and carve grooves in them to encase the graphite-based leads. The workers then carefully insert the finished leads into the grooves, glue the two wooden halves together, run the resulting slats through a saw that cuts them into single pencils, and finish them with a shaping machine that smoothes the pencils' surfaces.
　　Modern pencils come in over 350 each designed for a specific use, and may be purchased in over 72 colors. Black pencils, or graphite-based pencils, come in 19 degrees of hardness and of intensity. Specialty pencil leads are crafted to write on surfaces such as cloth, cellophane, plastics, and movie film. Architects, engineers, and those doing outdoor construction work primarily purchase these specialty leads, as they possess non-fade, weatherproof qualities. The versatility of Conte's brainchild, the pencil, makes it the essential, indispensable tool of these trades.

　　距离2016年中考不到半个月，成都市机投中学初三的一间教室内，传来阵阵麻将洗牌的声音。学生们每四人围成一桌，摸牌、打出，熟练而自然。
　　与普通麻将牌不一样的是，这些初三学生手中的牌面上，印着一个英文字母。在“打法”上，需要接住上家打出的牌，与自己手中牌面上的字母组合成英语单词，单词越长，得分越高。
　　在接受新京报记者采访时，“英语麻将”的发明者，成都市机投中学校长田精耘反复强调，这套麻将牌是“教具”，而非娱乐工具，将其引入校园的目的，则是为了提高学生的语言应用能力。
　　田精耘的“发明”，得到了当地教育主管部门的认可。“英语麻将”在五月底走进教室的时候，也入选了由中国教育科学院组织的教育综合改革试验初中学生社会实践成果展示活动。
　　成都市机投中学官网显示，学校创建于1969年，是直属武侯区教育局管理的一所全日制公办中学。目前，学校有在编教师92名，30个教学班，学生1300余人。
　　走进教室的“麻将牌”
　　近日，一张中学生在教室内打麻将的照片在网络流传。照片中，身着校服的学生四人一组，围在麻将桌旁，表情专注，又显得轻松。
　　教室里的学生，来自成都市机投中学初三毕业班，而他们手中的麻将牌，被称为“英语麻将”。
　　如果仔细观察桌上的麻将牌，会发现些许异样。在学生所使用的麻将牌面上，并没有筒、条等花色，取而代之的是一个大大的英文字母，字母上标着的数字，是该字母在字母表上的排序。
　　在打法上，“英语麻将”有点类似成都麻将中的“血战到底”。摸足十三张牌后，上家先出一张牌，下家接过牌后，与自己手中牌面上的字母进行随机组合，拼成英语单词。如果下家无法拼出，则再传给下面一家，一直到上家的牌都打完。在计分时，拼出英语单词最多，单词最长的一方获胜。
　　还有“英语围棋”“英语扑克”
　　初三学生教室内打“英语麻将”在网络引发质疑，部分网友认为，作为一种娱乐甚至赌博用具，麻将不应该进入校园，更不应该与临近中考的毕业班学生产生关联。
　　新京报记者了解到，机投中学学生使用的这种“英语麻将”，发明者是该校校长田精耘。而在接受新京报记者采访时，田精耘多次表示，“英语麻将”是一种教学用具，与用于娱乐的普通麻将有着“本质区别”。
　　田精耘告诉新京报记者，自己从事英语教学超过三十年，其间发明过不少教学用具，除了“英语麻将”外，还有“英语围棋”、“英语扑克”等。在他看来，上述发明只是借用了娱乐工具的外形，其目的在于营造英语学习的氛围，内核仍然是“教学用具”。
　　学生和父母一起“打麻将”
　　在田精耘看来，“英语麻将”本质上是一种智力游戏，仅仅是借用了麻将的“壳”，与娱乐或者赌博并无关系。
　　然而，这样的“英语麻将”推出后，仍然一度受到一些家长质疑。面对质疑，田精耘并没有作过多解释，而是采用了一种“共同参与”的办法，让家长也参与其中。
　　“学校里的&英语麻将&，学生可以借回去用，跟自己的父母一起打。”田精耘说，家长与孩子的“对垒”，无形中拉近了学校教育和家庭教育之间的距离。“语言教育的本质是语言的应用，通过这样的场景建设，为学生在家里也创造了语言学习的环境。”

　　“英语麻将”引发热议，其发明者田精耘也成为了焦点人物。昨天下午，新京报记者与成都市机投中学校长田精耘进行了一次对话。
　　“用中国传统融合英语教学”
　　新京报：发明新“教具”的动因是什么？
　　田精耘：实际上对教具的改革探索，我从十多年前就开始了。30年的教学经历中，我个人的感受是，调动学生的学习兴趣，其实是课堂教学中最重要的一点，也是一个难点。也是基于这样的原因，我才考虑去发明一些新的教具。
　　新京报：现在的英语教学中，有这方面的需求吗？
　　田精耘：一些一线的英语教师跟我说过，在课后单词巩固这块，老师盯得累，学生学得也累。费力，收效还不大。语言本身是交流的工具，作为教师，应该创设情境，为学生营造语言交流的氛围。
　　新京报：为什么会是麻将？
　　田精耘：其实不仅仅是麻将，我个人的发明还有英语扑克、英语围棋这些。过去，我们在创造语言交流环境时，经常用“英语角”这样的形式。但其实这是西方的文化，对于我们英语教学而言，显得不够本土化。“英语麻将”，就是这样一种借用中国传统形式，融合英语教学的尝试。
　　“学生学得很快，有的还发明新玩法”
　　新京报：“英语麻将”推出后，受到过质疑吗？
　　田精耘：有家长提出过，虽然“英语麻将”不是麻将，但是会不会在潜移默化中“鼓励”孩子打麻将。但是随着家长的参与，大家明白它不是一种娱乐，而是学习工具。
　　新京报：有人说“英语麻将”的噱头大于实质？
　　田精耘：我们学校目前的实验效果看，学生写英语作文，用词更活泼了。在语言情景上，利用“英语麻将”组词，然后写成作文，要比以往单纯地看图写作文效果好。
　　新京报：学生的反响怎么样？
　　田精耘：学生一开始是觉得很好奇，但是学得很快。一些学生还自己发明了新玩法，比如任意摸四张牌，看谁最快组成单词。通过这些你就能看出来，智慧还是在学生。
　　“需要更多一线教师参与”
　　新京报：“英语麻将”一共做了多少副？
　　田精耘：实际上，“英语麻将”并没有量产，目前只出了几副，都放在我们学校里。
　　新京报：学生使用的频率高吗？
　　田精耘：我们学校的学生，每周有一节英语活动课程。在这个40分钟里，学生可以自由选择教具，你可以选择英语麻将，也可以选择英语围棋。
　　新京报：在这方面，未来还有什么新的打算？
　　田精耘：我们正在申报成都市级教育课题。目前，“英语麻将”还在实验阶段，它对学生学习上到底有多大帮助，还需要研究，也需要更多的一线教师参与。
