and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the
corresponding litter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through
the center.
Questions 21-25 are based on the following passage.
Why is it that the most connected we get, the more disconnected
we felt? Every advance in communications technology is a setback
(挫折) to the intimacy of human interaction. With e-mail and instant
messaging over the Internet, we can now communicate without seeing
or talking to one another. With voice mail, you can conduct entire
conversations without ever reading any If my mother has a question,

(自动的), the more people feel they are strangers to each other. You
can’t even call a person to get the phone number of another person
anywhere. Telephone assistance is almost always fully
automated.
Buying gasoline at the station? Why say good-morning to the
attendant when you can pay with your credit card and save yourself
the bother of human contact?
Making a deposit at the bank? Why talk to a clerk who might live
in the neighborhood when you can just insert your credit card into
the automatic machine?

the food store. Some chain stores are using a self-scanner so you
can check yourself out, avoiding those cold clerks who look at you
and ask how you are doing.

Questions 31-35 are based on the following passage.
8848.net is a company that focuses heavily on e-commerce, that
is, electronic commerce. Enter the homepage (主页) of 8848.net and
you can purchase your various goods through the Internet.
The sales of 8848.net last month were 12.5 million yuan,
equal to the turnover (营业额) of a middle-sized supermarket (超市). The
success of 8848.net indicates that e-commerce is reaching the
public, challenging traditional shopping centers. Convenience has
become the most important element in any commercial interaction.
That’s what online shopping offers.
What 8848.net offers are 120.000 online goods, including books,
software, computers, and electrical appliances. A Wangfujing
department store in Beijing doesn’t have so many items. What’s
more, there are about 4 million Internet fans in China. That means
8848.net is running 4 million chain stores. Traditional huge
warehouses and personnel on longer seem to be necessary.
More products and better services are provided, along with lower
prices. It is said that 8848.net is now preparing to offer more
up-to-date consumer goods, such as digital cameras, MP3 devices and
IT (Information Technology) household appliances.
8848’s product information is the most complete available on
China’s e-commerce networks. There are 200.000 pages of information
on the firm’s goods. Compared to the customers who sometimes find
it impossible to choose among products because of the lack of
information about online goods, the customers of 8848.net are
satisfied. If a customer wants to purchase a book, he can easily
find more than 20 related book reviews (评论) by experts and ordinary
readers. That helps the customer to make a decision.

We are all talking about and using the Internet (互联网),but how
many of us know the history of the Internet?
Many people are surprised 81 they find that the Internet
was 82 up in the 1980s. 83 that time, computers were
84 and expensive. Computer networks didn’t work
well.85 one computer in the network 86 down, then the
whole network stopped. 87 a new network 88had to be
built. It should be good enough to be used by many 89
computers. If part of the network was not working, information
could be 90 through another part. In this 91, a
computer net word system would keep 92 working all the
At first the Internet was 93 used by the government, but,
in the early 1970s, universities, hospitals and bands were
94 to use it too. However, computers were still very
95 and the Internet was difficult to use. 96 the
beginning of the 1990s, computers had become cheaper and easier to
use. Scientists had also97 software that made ‘surfing’(漫游)
the Internet 98 convenient.
Today it is easy to get on-line (上网) and it is 99 that
millions of people use the Internet every day. Sending e-mail is
more and more popular among students.
The Internet has now become one of the most 100 parts of
people’s life.

7.W: John, are you doing research for Professor Williams this
M: Actually, I am working as his teaching assistant.
Q: What does the man mean?
8.M: I heard there are a few seats left for the show
W: Really? I was under the impression that the tickets were sold
out a long time ago.
Q: What do we know from the woman's reply?
9.W: Mrs. Long's briefing seems to go on forever. I was barely
able to stay awake.
M: How could you sleep through that? It was very important for
the mission we were going to carry out.
Q: What does the man imply?
10.W: You seem very confident about the job interview, don't
M: Yes, I feel ready for it. I bought a good suit and clothing

finance and economics.
Q: Where is the man probably going to work?
Section B Passage 1
There was once a man in South America who had a parrot, a pet
bird that could imitate human speech. The parrot was unique. There
was no bird like him in the whole world. He could learn to say any
word except one. He could not say the name of his native town,
Ketunnel. The man did everything he could to teach the parrot to
say Ketunnel, but he never succeeded. At first he was very gentle
with the bird. But gradually, he lost his temper. "You stupid bird.
Why can't you learn to say that one word? Say Ketunnel or I will
kill you." But the parrot would not say it. Many times the man
screamed, "Say Ketunel, or I'll kill you." But the bird would never
repeat the name. Finally, the man gave up. He picked up the parrot
and threw him into the chicken house. "You are even more stupid
than the chickens." In the chicken house, there were four old
chickens, waiting to be killed for Sunday's dinner. The next
morning, when he went out of the chicken house, the man opened the
door. He was shocked by what he saw. He could not believe his eyes
and ears. On the floor lay three dead chickens. The parrot was
screaming at the fourth, "Say Ketunel, or I'll kill you."
11.Why did the man lose his temper?
12.Who killed the three chickens?
13.Why was the shocked at the scene the next morning?
In Britain, if you are found guilty of a crime, you can be
sent to prison or be fined or be ordered to do community work such
as tidying public places and helping the old. You may also be sent
to special centers when you learn special skills like cooking,
writing and car maintenance. About 5 percent of the present
population are women. Many prisons were built over one hundred
years ago. But the government will have built 11 new prisons by
next year. There are two sorts of prisons. The open sort and the
closed sort. In the closed sort, prisoners are given very little
freedom. They spend three to ten hours outside their cells when
they exercise, eat, study, learn skills, watch TV and talk to other
prisoners. All prisoners are expected to work. Most of them are
paid for what they do, whether it is doing maintenance or cooking
and cleaning. Prisoners in open prisons are locked up at night, but
for the rest of the time, they are free within the prison grounds.
They can exercise, have visitors, or study. And some are allowed
out of the ground to study or to do community work.
14.What do we know about women prisoners in Britain?
15.In what way are open prisons different from closed
16.What do we learn about prisoners in Britain?
London taxi drivers know the capital like the back of their
hands. No matter how small or indistinct the street is, the driver
will be able to get you there without any trouble. The reason
London taxi drivers are so efficient is that they all have gone
through a very tough training period to get special taxi driving
license. During this period, which can take two to four years, the
would-be taxi driver has to learn the most direct route to every
single road and to every important building in London. To achieve
this, most learners go around the city on small motorbikes
practicing how to move to and from different points of the city.
Learner taxi drivers are tested several times during the training
period by government officers. The exams are terrible experience.
The officers ask you "How do you get from Birmingham palace to the
Tower of London?" and you have to take them there in the direct
line. When you get to the tower, they won't say "well done". They
will quickly move on to the next question. After five or six
questions, they will just say "See you in two months' time." and
then you know the exam is over. Learner drivers are not allowed to
work and earn money as drivers. Therefore, many of them keep their
previous jobs until they have obtained the license. The training
can cost quite a lot, because learners have to pay for their own
expenses on the tests and the medical exam.
17.Why are London taxi drivers very efficient?
18.How long does the training period last?
19.Why does the speaker think the driving test is a terrible
experience?
20.Why do learner drivers have to keep their present jobs?

Questions 21-25 are based on the following passage.
21. The first sentence of the passage shows that today______
& & A) people do not stay in
one place all the time
& & B) people do not like to
be familiar with others
&& C) people
feel much more lonely than before
做题思路:该选项与原句中的the more disconnected we felt,后句中的setback (挫折) to
the intimacy of human interaction意思最为接近。
people have less time to enjoy themselves
22. The word “intimacy” in line 2, paragraph 1. most probably
means______.
A) closeness
B) tendency
C) curiosity
D) happiness
23. If you ask somebody to give the telephone number of another
person, you______.
审题思路:本题关键词是ask, telephone number of another person, 可以定位到You

C) are likely to be laughed at
D) have to send him an email
24. This passage seems to tell us that______.
strore(共同词)回原文定位,做题须谨慎。
A) buying things in a chain store is pleasant
B) most chain stores will not have clerks
Pretty soon you won’t have the burden
C) chain stores are more convenient than other shops
D) clerks in chain stores are not friendly
25. From this passage we can see that the writer______.
A) thinks that we should be familiar with modem technology
B) holds a negative attitude towards today’s communications

C) believes that people are more concerned with themselves now
D) welcomes the influence of modern communications on our
Questions 26-30 are based on the following passage

people。。。。。

C) billions of dollars has been spent on

highest prisoner population in the

prisoner about $20.000 a year, the cost in 1999 for keeping all

C) the number of prisoners is not really large
D) prisoner population decreased in the 1990s

that the rise in the prisoner population in the 1990s coincided
with (与…相一致) a steady drop in the US crime
rates.
30. The author’s attitude towards the government’s policy

A) negative
B) positive
C) doubtful

B) the net company is turning into a middle-sized supermarket
C) online shopping has replaced the traditional shopping

D) people are starting to like online shopping

its______.

become the most important element in any commercial interaction.
That’s what online shopping offers。
B) variety

Dear Sirs,
I am writing to apply for the job as a computer programmer you
provided in your Ads on July 21st. Of course, it is my hope that I
can be the right candidate for the position.
I, an unmarried man, was born on May 16th, 1980,
living at Fuxin Road 61 Nanchang city. In 2001, I, with excellent
study records, graduated from computer department of Nanchang
College as a computer designing major student. After several years
English study in college, I am very good at English reading,
translation and speaking, the only factor which makes me more
suitable for the post. Besides all mentioned above, I also enjoy
music, swimming, literature and net surfing after class.
I really appreciate the interview made by you if possible.
