The Beijing International Marathon has acquired a new name among some disappointed
participants: Smogathon.
About 30,000
runners, many from other parts of China or abroad, awoke in the Chinese capital
on Sunday to an orange sun glowing weakly through a dirty haze(雾霾). Some ran anyway. Some ran away. But no one
cancelled on the advice of the organizers, the Chinese Athletic Association and
the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Sports, because those organizations did not
call it off. That has made participants call the International Association of
Athletics Federations (IAAF), which has approved the 26-mile, or 42-kilometer
race, to set air quality standards in the future to avoid damaging the runners’
health. The association could not be reached by telephone on Sunday.
&& “Does the IAAF
have guidelines?” asked Chas Pope, a British engineer who took part in the
marathon on Sunday. “If they don’t, they should consider it,” said Mr. Pope,
who has lived in Beijing for 11 years and runs several long-distance races each
year. “It’s meant to be fun and good for your health,” Mr. Pope said of the
marathon. “But in such air, it’s just ridiculous to be running,” he said. He
abandoned the course. “Most of my overseas friends pulled out,” he said. “And
quite a few of my Chinese friends too, but a lot didn’t. I think they don’t
know as much about the health impact.”
Twitter and Chinese social media showed Chinese runners wearing a variety of
face protections, from light cloth masks to World War I-style gas masks. Still
many completed the race without masks. “Today’s race should definitely have
been called off or rescheduled,” said Zhang Kai, Beijing-based campaigner with
Greenpeace East Asia. “What happened today to this sports even is just another
reminder to the government that much remains to be done to China’s energy and industrial structure to solve pollution,” said Mr. Zhang. “If the battle
against pollution is a marathon, it is now time to catch up on speed.”
In the end, the
race was won by two Ethiopians: Girmay Birhanu Gebru won the men’s race in 2
hours, 10 minutes and 42 seconds while Fatuma Sado Dergo won the women’s in 2
hours, 30 minutes and 3 seconds, breaking Chinese women’s advantage of the race
for the last 22 years.
The favored
Chinese woman runner, Gong Lihua, told China News Net that the smog didn’t
affect her too much but it interfered with many people’s ability to sweat,
affecting their performance.

“Some ran anyway. Some ran away.” mean _____________.
A. Some runners
who dropped out returned to run.

gave up after running a short distance.
C. Not all
runners continued to run.

quit the race.
33. Why did participants call
A. To tell it
the Beijing International Marathon was also named Smogathon.
B. To appeal to
it to set air quality standards in the future.
C. To tell it
the 42-kilometer race should be cancelled.
D. To appeal to
it to make some laws to prevent pollution.
34. Which of the following
states does Chas Pope agree to?
A. A dirty haze
is harmful to health.&&&&&&&&&&&
B. Running in any air is good.
C. The marathon
in China should be cancelled.& D. Friends should learn from each other.
35. Zhang Kai thinks the
battle against pollution _______.

LONDON-The news that a Chinese maths textbook
will be introduced into Britain this summer has again caught the eyes of people
in the education field, as well as the public, since the first group of maths
teachers from China's Shanghai took part in an exchange project in Britain last year.
The supplementary textbook, One
Lesson One Exercise, is a popular book for students in Shanghai for more than
20 years. Earlier on Thursday, the publisher East China Normal University Press
said, in January, it signed an agreement with HarperCollins to publish an
English version of the book this summer in Britain, which would be named as One
Lesson One Exercise of Shanghai Maths.
It said experts &familiar with both Chinese
textbooks and British educational conditions are compiling(编辑) the maths section on
the basis of the pre-existing domestic edition&, and some changes would be
made as the education systems of the two countries are different. However, the
difficulty won't be reduced. So far, the number of schools and students who
will use this textbook is unknown. Britain's Department for Education said, at
this stage, it's a matter for
the publishing company, and won't make any comments on this.
man who required anonymous(匿名的)
said he had noticed a very
interesting phenomenon in his daughter's school and other schools in London,
that most of Chinese students, even Asian students can get a higher scores than
others in maths. He said he learnt the news of Shanghai textbook on the
Internet, but he thought it's very complicated to judge whether the action
would be good or bad for students in Britain.
&The introduction of the Shanghai textbook
may play a part in improving local students' numeracy(计算能力) skills, however, I
think local maths lessons place more focus on developing students' ability of
inference and logical thinking, rather than the numeracy skills. They'd like to
complete maths problems by tools, but not in particular require students to
master of numeracy,& he said.

WASHINGTON (October 10, 2014) -- This year’s Nobel Prize for Physics was
awarded to inventors of LEDs, now being used around the world. However,
according to the International Energy Agency and the World Bank, more than a
billion people in the world still do not have access to electricity. After
sunset, most of them use candles or oil lamps. A company in the Netherlands is trying to change that with its products based on LEDs.
When darkness falls,
many kids in rural parts of Haiti, Rwanda, or refugee camps in Syria read or do
their homework by candlelight or a kerosene(煤油)-burning lamp. The open flames sometimes cause
fires, while poisonous gases lead to respiratory problems.
Portable(便携的)electric light is safer,
healthier and now, even cheaper. “This is the first time that artificial light
or solar LED is now less expensive than kerosene,” said Camille van Gestel,
head of a Dutch company called WakaWaka, over Skype. He added WakaWaka, which
means “Shine Bright” in Swahili, is the most efficient solar-powered light and
phone charger in the world today. When fully charged, it shines for up to 16
hours. It is affordable, sustainable, and its battery lasts for a long time. It
can be set up on any flat surface, hung from a ceiling or set on top of a glass
Van Gestel said his company
operates like any other business, but some of the money made from selling its
products is used to make WakaWaka lights affordable to poor people. He said the
plan is supported by international non-government organizations.
“The International
Rescue Committee was one of the first to actually take the WakaWaka power into Syria, to provide light and power for Syrian refugees, and now the WakaWaka is the most valued
non-food item in Syria,” said Van Gestel. In the past 24 months, the company
has distributed around 300,000 units in places such as Syria, Hati, Rwanda,
Indonesia and the Philippines. Its goal is to reach 1.2 billion people by

When it comes to
President Obama,most
of his personal business is already known by the public. Personal information
about his children, Malia and Sasha, however, has been kept a little more under
The New York Times
recently released a list of rules that Michelle Obama has mentioned over the
years that Malia and Sasha must follow during their time in the White House,as
well as in general. See how the first family educates their children:
The girls must write
reports about what they've seen on their trips, even if it's not required by
their school.
Malia may use her cell
phone only on the weekend,and
she and her sister cannot watch television or use a computer for anything but
homework during the week.
Malia and Sasha have
to play two sports:one
they choose and one selected by their mother.
Malia must learn to do
laundry(洗衣服)before
she leaves for college.
The girls have to eat
their vegetables,and
if they say they are not hungry, they cannot ask for cookies or chips later.
While these might be
shocking to some,Michelle
said,“They're
not little princesses. It's just basic rules, boundaries, and expectations that we
would have normally.”
Michelle also mentions
another set of rules:
The girls must do
their chores(家务),though
the White House has a large staff. Malia and Sasha have chores of their own.
They must play a team
sport, because it's about learning how to play on a team, how

LONDON(Reuters)—Quiet please—Britain’s
Queen Elizabeth is preparing to have her swans counted.
Buckingham Palace has announced
that the annual Swan Upping,a
tradition dating back to the 12th century which involves a census of the swan population
on the River Thames,will
be conducted by the Queen’s official Swan Marker from July 20—24.
“With the assistance of the Queen’s
Swan Warden,Professor
Christopher Perrins of the University of Oxford, the swans and young cygnets(小天鹅) are also assessed for any signs

travel up the river counting the swans, but would catch as many as possible as they
were sought&after for banquets and feasts.
This year, the Swan Marker and the Swan Warden
are particularly keen to discover how much damage is being caused to swans and cygnets
by attacks from dogs and from discarded fishing tackle (渔具).
It is also an important year because
Queen Elizabeth has decided to join her team of Swan Uppers for part of the census. She

BEIJING — China's education
authority will tighten the widely criticized policy of “extra credits” for
the national college entrance examination to ensure a fairer chance for all
exam-takers.
Under the policy, high
school students who win awards in national Olympic competitions could get
‘‘extra credits’, up to 20 points for the national
college entrance exam. Students with talent in sports and
students who are from ethnic groups can also benefit from this policy. The
extra credits
increased these students' chances of being admitted by famous universities.
Some parents were found to have helped their children fabricate(伪造)award experiences or
falsify qualifications to get extra credits.
“It has harmed education
equality,” the
ministry said.
Xiong Bingqi, vice-chief
of the 21st Century Education Research Institute, said the policy is designed to
help students who have special talents but may be weak in academic performance
a chance to receive higher education. It will still be needed but it is time to
make the rules
The ministry said it
will reduce the range of competitions whose winners can get extra credits, and limit the
winners, privileges.
The new policy will
apply to students who begin high school in 2011, it said.
Chen Lei, a mother of a 10-year-old
girl, said she welcomed the ministry's policy adjustment as she does
not want her daughter to become an Olympic competition geek.
But not all the Chinese
parents welcomed the new policy. “It is like a thunderbolt for me. My 13-year-old son
has spent so much time studying Olympic math, and
participated in so many technological competitions during
vacations. It is useless now,” said Dong Wen, a 43-year-old mother.
A student said, “Many
students have changed the current study plan, and they can abandon the competition.
I will be interested in learning the courses which can improve my abilities.”
Yuan Guiren, minister of
education, told China Daily that the reform is an attempt to consider the overall
quality of an applicant. “But the country will not stop the national college
entrance &examination
as it is still the most objective way to evaluate talent in China,” he said.

&&& LONDON/SAN
FRANCISCO —The Sydney Opera House to San Francisco’s Golden
Gate Bridge went dark as people switched off lights in their homes and skylines
dimmed around the world on Saturday to show concern about global warming.
&& Up to 30 million
people were expected to have turned off their lights for 60 minutes by the time
“Earth Hour” — which started in Suva in Fiji and Christchurch in New Zealand ─
completed its cycle westward. More than 380 towns and cities and 3,500
businesses in 35 countries signed up for the campaign that is in its second
year after it began in 2007 in Sydney, Australia’s largest city.
&& “Earth Hour shows
that every day people are prepared to pull together to find a solution to
climate change. It can be done,” said James Leape of WWF International, which
was running the campaign.
&& Lights at Sydney’s Opera House and Harbour Bridge were lowered as Australians held candle-lit beach
parties, played poker by candlelight and floated candles down rivers.
&& In Bangkok, some of the city’s business districts, shopping malls and billboards went
dark,& although street lights stayed on. One major hotel invited guests to
dine by candle light and reported brisk business.
&& In Copenhagen, the Tivoli Gardens and the Royal Palace and the opera darkened for an hour,
along with many street lights.
& “In the central square a
lot of people were standing looking at the stars,” said Ida Thuesen,&
spokeswoman for WWF Denmark. “It’s not often you can see the stars in a city.”
& “It is not just about
turning off the lights, it is about raising awareness,” San Francisco Mayor
Gavin Newsom said. “Energy efficiency is low-hanging fruit. Energy efficiency
is the easiest thing we can do to reduce global warming.”
&& Buildings account
for about one-third of the carbon emissions that scientists say will boost
global average temperatures by between 1.4 and 4.0 degrees Celsius this
century, bringing floods and famines and putting millions of lives at risk.
Organizers of Earth Hour said that while switching off a light for one hour
would have little impact on carbon emissions, the fact that so many people were
taking part showed how much interest and concern about the climate crisis had
taken hold. They said they planned a similar event March 28, 2009.

news travels fast—when you watch the evening
news or read the morning papers, it seems that things that get the most
coverage are all tragedies like wars, earthquakes, floods, fires and murders.
is the classic rule for mass media. “They want
your eyeballs and don’t care how you’re feeling,” Jonah Berger, a psychologist
at University of Pennsylvania told The New York Times.
with social media getting increasingly
popular, information is now being spread in different ways, and researchers are
discovering new rules—good news can actually spread faster and farther than
disasters and other sad stories.
and his colleague Katherine Milkman looked at
thousands of articles on The New York Times’ website and analyzed the
“most e-mailed” list for six months.
of his findings was that articles in the
science section were much more likely to make the list. Those stories aroused
feelings of awe (敬畏) and
made the readers want to share this positive emotion with others.
science stories, readers were also found to be
likely to share articles that were exciting or funny. “The more positive an
article was, the more likely it was to be shared,” Berger wrote in his new
book. “For example, stories about newcomers falling in love with New York City,” he writes, “tended to be shared more than the death of a popular
zookeeper.”
does all this good news actually make the
audience feel better? Not necessarily.
According to a study by researchers at Harvard University,
people tend to say more positive things about themselves when they’re talking
to a bigger audience, rather than just one person, which helps explain all the
perfect vacations that keep showing up on microblogs. This, researchers found,
makes people think that life is unfair and that they’re less happy than their
no worries. There’s a quick and easy way to
relieve the depression you get from viewing other people’s seemingly perfect
lives— turn on the television and watch the news. There is always someone doing
worse than you are.

长春外国语学校2015届高三年级期末考试 试卷 试题及答案之二.doc
When asked to
point out one or two things that are most important to themselves, many put
friends ahead of homes, jobs, clothes and cars.
A true friendship
carries a long history of experience that determines who we are and keeps us
connected. It is a treasure we should protect. Unfortunately, the better
friends you are, the more probably you'll have disagreements. And the result
can be what you don't want — an end to the relationship.
The good news is
that most troubled friendships can be mended. First, don't let your pride get
in your way. Most of us can forgive(原谅)each other
when differences are brought out in the open. Second, apologize when you're
wrong — even if you've been wronged. Over the course of a friendship, even the
best people make mistakes. Sometimes, it may be best if the wronged
person takes the lead and apologizes. When you apologize, give your
friend a chance to admit that he has been wrong. Third, see things from your
friend's point of view . And finally, accept that friendships change as our
needs and lifestyles change. Making friends can sometimes seem easy. The hard
part is keeping the connections strong during the natural ups and downs that
have an effect on all relationships. My suggestion: Consider friendship an
honor and a gift, and worth the effort to treasure and nurture (培养).
