A mother planted many kinds of
vegetables in her garden. One morning she said to her daughter, &Betty,
come here. Look at all these little yellow marks(斑点) on the
leaves of the cabbages(卷心菜). They are eggs of a kind of

must find all the eggs on the leaves and kill them. In this way, you will help
us have better, greener and bigger cabbages.”
Betty didn't think she should

few days and couldn't work in her garden. When she was well, she took Betty to
the garden to see the cabbages. To their surprise, the insects had eaten up
every leaf. When Betty saw this, she was upset and began to cry. Then her
mother said to her, &We should never put off what we have to do today till
tomorrow. And you must learn to deal with the things while they are small, or
it will turn into a big problem.&

Helen Keller was an American educator and journalist,
who became one of the leading humanitarians in the history of the United States. Born on June 27, 1880 in Tuscumbia, a small town in Alabama, Keller was
stricken with a childhood disease that left her deaf, and blind. The illness
Keller suffered (遭受) is a mystery to this day. Unable to see,
or hear, Keller became difficult to deal with as her behaviour was described as
wild by her family and friends.
Soon Keller and her family developed their
own type of sign language that allowed them to communicate with each other.
Helen’s mother needed help for her anguished (痛苦的)
child, which eventually led to Anne Sullivan, who was a recent graduate (毕业生) of the Perkins Institute for the Blind. The school
had been successful in the past in educating blind students, and Sullivan was
one of its star graduates. Once Sullivan and Keller got through the difficult
beginnings, their friendship, and association (合作)
lasted for 49 years.
Keller was determined to become educated,
and to teach herself to communicate. After attending several schools, she
became the first deaf and blind person to earn a college degree. She became very
well-known, and began a lecture tour where she made speeches on social and
political issues, including women’s suffrage (选举权),
and birth control. Also she required the government to raise awareness to the
situation of the blind. She devoted much of her later life to raising funds for
the American Foundation for the Blind.
On September 14, 1964, President Lyndon B.
Johnson awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom, one of the United States’ two highest civilian honours. In 1999, Keller was listed in Gallup’s Most Widely Admired People of the 20th century.

Happiness is not far away
Happiness comes from the little things in life. Simple ways in our
daily life often help the most. It is not a dream for you to make it come true
but a shining star that guides you and a mirror that shows you the meaning of
life in the world. If you feel that happiness does not come to you, here are
the following steps which will lead you there.
To yourself
Start by treating yourself kindly and becoming your own best friend.
Give up trying so hard to become someone else who is not yourself
right now. It’s better to just be you.
To your life
Walk in the park or along the street with a pet. Balance your life
with activities and a good rest.
Play and do those activities which gently nurture (滋养) your own mind. Playing in
your garden or filling your home with beautiful flowers is not a bad try and
the memory of those flowers will be always carried with you.
Smile as you think about the future. If you smile, you can not have
negative (消极的)
Concentrate on the positive (积极的) in this world and look for joy.
To your work
Work hard and make efforts to reach your goals, and reward yourself
when you are done.
Remove the task that is not useful. We are learning that doing too
many tasks at the same time just doesn’t work.
Try writing down what is troubling you, discussing your trouble with
yourself. The science now shows that as you write your troubles, your brain
will change for the better.
By writing a daily thanks dairy, you will feel the positive memory
and experiences once more, and by remembering these moments, your levels of
happiness will rise.
To your friends
You can write a “happy letter” to your family and friends every day.
Just a short note will do. You can do the following:
Monday: Write a thank-you note to your friend.
Tuesday: Write a short letter to your friend about a good moment you
have recently experienced.
Wednesday: Write about a nice moment you plan to experience in the
Thursday: Write a letter to someone that is important in your life.
Friday: Write three things that went really well today.
Saturday and Sunday: Go on with your daily thanks diary.
If you pay attention to all that is good in your life instead of
negative thoughts, happiness will become a natural part of your day!

Do you ever
get to the bottom of the page and realize you’ve got too little time or too
little interest to spend another minute on the book? It happens to everybody
sometimes. Luckily, there are many things you can do to make the reading a lot
easier and faster. For example, if you read a paragraph, consider skimming over
the whole story to get the main idea and the main characters, so you’ll know
what to pay attention to as you read more closely. Reading about the book on
the Internet can be a good way to get a good conclusion of the reading to help
you get through it more easily. Just don’t forget to go back and read through
more closely.
While reading,
don’t forget to look up any words or ideas you aren’t sure about. You can use context
(上下文) clues to help you understand things you think
difficult, but it’s always a good idea to take a minute to learn any
reference (参考书). It’ll make the reading much easier.
importantly, be sure to learn to take notes while you are reading. You can
write questions in the margin (页边空白), and underline
things which you think are interesting and important ideas. If you’re reading
something difficult and find yourself often wanting to go back to get something
you missed, then, at the end of each page, or even at the end of each
paragraph, write something about what happened on that page. If you find
something that needs answering, always write it down. This might give you a
good question to ask later in class, or give you something to think more about
as you continue reading. What’s more, when you finish reading, start writing
down what seems important, what you think the purpose of the writing is, and
how it makes you feel as a reader.
finish reading, get together with your friends or classmates and discuss the
reading. Try to know how your classmates understand the reading and compare it
with your own. Try not to talk about whether or not it is “boring”, but pay
attention to how well your classmates explain what you might have found
difficult. Think of open questions to explore the reading, and don’t ask questions
that can be answered with a “yes” or a “no”. Learning to ask “how” is a helpful
way of coming up with big discussion questions.

How do students spend their spare time after
finishing their homework? Watch TV, play computer games, or go outside to
relax? Here’s a good example.
Tim and Kerry Meek are both teachers. They live in the UK with their two daughters:
eleven-year-old Amy and nine-year-old Ella. Recently, the Meek family has
become the focus of the whole country after they completed 100 different
outdoor activities
in one year.
The Meek couple didn’t want their children to spend all their
free time in front of the TV and become “couch tomatoes”. So about one year
ago, the Meeks decided that watching TV and playing computer games were not
permitted. Instead, they set 100 tasks for the two girls to do outside.
Although Mr. and Mrs. Meek are not outdoor activity fans, they took part in all
the activities to encourage their daughters. It turns out that the two sisters
really had a good time joining activities.
Every holiday and weekend, whether it’s sunny, rainy or snowy, the Meeks’ would
set off to try the activities on their list, including hiking, sailing,
climbing, skiing, and so on. The two little girls not only had a wonderful
time, but also learned a lot of skills from the activities. They were even able
to stand up in front of their school to give a talk for charity. “Our friends
spend a lot of their free time doing things which are harmful to their health.
Luckily, we’ve had the chance to experience something different.” Amy and Ella
also helped their parents to draw up a new list of challenges for the next 12

Dragon Boat Festival, also called
Duanwu Festival, is celebrated on lunar May 5th. For
thousands of years, the festival has been marked by eating Zong Zi and racing
dragon boats. In order to remember Qu Yuan, one of the greatest poets in China, people hold the dragon boat races every year. That is the origins(起源)
of this festival.
Qu Yuan was born in Zigui of Hubei Province over
2,200 years ago. Qu Yuan was an honest official(官员) of the state of
Chu, during the Warring States Period (475-221 BC) (战国时期). He was upright(正直的) and wise. He
wanted to bring his country peace and make the state stronger, but the country
was in the hands of bad officials, so he failed. At last, he was very
disappointed. He ended his life by throwing himself into the Miluo River. It was said people jumped from boats into the river and tried to save him. But it
was too late. Also, they were very sad. They threw rice into the water to feed
the dragons in the river. They hoped that the dragons would eat Zong Zi instead
of the poet’s body.
Now we often read his poem Li Sao which
is filled with deep love for his country. We can see the dragon boat races and
have a kind of Chinese food named Zong Zi during the Dragon Boat Festival.

Note-taking is a skill that can help
you do well in all your schoolwork. It can make you confident when you are
studying. But unluckily, most students don’t know how to take notes.
If your teacher writes notes on the
blackboard, that’s great. You can copy them or write down the most important

some teachers may focus on(关注) lots of dates and facts in class, but they only write the

but they may repeat them.&&&
Don’t try to write down every word in
class, or you might miss some important points. Some students really learn
better with the help of these notes.&&&
Don’t be afraid to ask your teacher to
repeat what you’re missed. If your teacher speaks too fast and you can’t follow
what he is saying, you can ask him after class.
&&& Comparing your notes with your classmates’ can be good for
your learning. It can also help you and your classmates correct some

We go to sleep at the end of each day to feel relaxed. But have you
ever wondered what sleep is like for animals?
In fact, animals have some surprising but fun sleeping habits, such
as sleeping standing up and shutting down half of their brain.
Giraffes can go for weeks without sleep and when they do get some
sleep, it’s less than five minutes. Giraffes get into danger easily because
they’re large and slow moving. This means they can’t sleep for long periods.
Little brown bats(蝙蝠) could be called the &laziest&, sleeping for around 19.5
hours a day. This long period of sleep is thought to be a way of saving energy.
It means they only hunt for a few hours every night when they can find
something to eat.
However, other animals are good at doing a few things at the same
For example, dolphins and whales keep half of their brain awake
while sleeping. This allows them to keep talking in air so they don’t drown.
Migrating (迁徙的)
birds can sleep while moving during long journeys. The journeys sometimes last
for six months.

One morning, a blind boy sat on the steps of a
building with a hat by his feet. He held a sign which said, “I am blind. Please
help me.”
There were only a few coins in the hat. A man was
walking by. He took out a few coins from his pocket and dropped them into the
hat. He then took the sign, turned it around, and wrote some words on it. He
put the sign back so that everyone walked by could see the new words.
Soon the hat began to fill up. A lot more people were
giving money to the blind boy. That afternoon the man who had changed the sign
came to see how things were. The boy recognized his footsteps and asked, “Are
you the one who changed my sign in the morning? What did you write?”
The man said, “I only wrote the truth. I said what you
said, but in a different way.” What he had written was, “Today is a beautiful
day, but I can’t see it.”
Do you think the first sign and the second sign were
saying the same thing? Of course both signs told people the boy was blind. But
the first simply told people to help by putting some money in the hat. The
second sign told people that they were able to enjoy the beauty of the day, but
the boy could not enjoy it because he was blind.
The first sign simply said the boy was blind, while the second sign told people
they were lucky that they were not blind. There are at least two lessons we can
learn from this simple story. The first is: Treasure what you have. Someone
else has less. Try your best to help those who need your help. The second is:
Be creative. Think differently. There is always a better way.
1. Did the boy
need help?
2. What did the
man write on the sign?
3. What happened
after the man wrote something on the sign?
4. Why did the man
come back that afternoon?
5. How did people
probably feel when they saw the second sign?

有些人在表达他们对食品,环境等方面的关注。请仔细阅读1-6和选项A、B、C、D、E和F,为每人选出适合他们各自想法的相关信息。选项中有一项为多余。
Holly: How I miss the clear water and fresh air in my childhood! But everything
has changed, that is, the clear water and fresh air are nowhere to be found
again as they were. Above all, a great deal of waste hardly rots(腐烂)
Jimmy: More and more people are beginning to have a good knowledge of the
importance of a safer
and cleaner environment, which in turn forces the business to be cleaned up.
Samantha: Organic products(有机产品) are getting more and more popular among
people, but we should know the fact that organic products might also do harm to
our health in some way.
_____4. Patria: I’m very much fond of growing some vegetables of
my own in my small garden, for many vegetables on sale in markets are actually
becoming more and more dangerous as a result of widespread pesticides(农药).
Derrick: Nowadays it is very convenient for consumers to find and buy green
food in supermarkets as they are clearly marked.
&Organic produce is always better, &Gold said.&The
food is free of pesticides, and you are generally supporting family farms
instead of large farms. And it is tastier.&
Market research shows that small amounts of pesticides can be used on organic
products. And about three quarters of organic food in
Britain is not local but imported(进口) to meet the need.
Many cities around the world today are heavily polluted. Careless ways of
production and lack of consumer demand for environment-friendly(环保)
products have made pollution problem more serious. Millions of tons of glass,
paper, plastic, and metal containers are produced, and these are difficult to
get rid of.
D.However, today, more and more consumers are
choosing &green& and care about the products they buy should be safe
for the environment. Before they buy a product, they ask questions like these:
&Will this shampoo be bad for the environment?& &Can this be
reused or can it only be used once?&
E.Only a few years ago, it was impossible to find
green products in supermarkets, but now there are hundreds. Some
supermarket products carry labels(标签) to show that the
product is green. Some companies have emphasized it in their
advertising that their products are clean and safe enough for people.
F.The concern for a safer and cleaner environment
is making companies rethink how they do business. No longer will the
public accept the old attitude of &Buy it, use it, throw it away, and
forget it.& The public pressure is on, and gradually business is cleaning
up its act.

Have you ever ridden a Ferris wheel lately? Can you imagine the
flying feeling as you are pulled up to the top and then moved down to the
bottom quickly again?
&&& Today a Ferris wheel is usually 40
to 60 feet tall. That seems very high when you are on the top looking down. But
the first Ferris wheel was 264 feet high – taller than a twenty-story building!
Can you imagine the view from the top of that?
&&& The first Ferris wheel was built for
the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago. The people who planned the fair were looking
for an attraction that would bring people to Chicago. George Ferris handed a
drawing of a giant wheel that people could ride on. At first everyone laughed
at his strange idea. But Mr. Ferris did not give up, and finally the idea was
accepted. The ride opened in June of 1893.
Today’s Ferris wheels have 12 to 16 seats, which each carry 2 or 3 people. But
that first one had 36 enclosed cars, each holding 60 passengers. When filled,
it carried 2,160 people. During that summer in Chicago, about 1.5 million
people rode the Ferris wheel.
After the fair the ride was moved to a nearby amusement park built especially
to show off the wheel. In 1904, it was moved again – to St. Louis for the
Louisiana Purchase Exposition. After the fair there, the wheel stood unused. In
1906 it was finally sold to a company for scrap metal (废铁).
Luckily a Chicago bridge builder, W.E. Sullivan, figured out how to make a
smaller Ferris wheel that could easily be taken apart and put together. In 1906
he started the company that still makes many of the Ferris wheels used today.
But, whenever you ride one, remember that it all began with George Ferris’s
strange idea!
1. How tall is a Ferris wheel today?
2. What was the first Ferris wheel built for?
3. What did people think of Ferris’s idea at first?
4. How many people rode the first Ferris wheel during the summer in
5. Compared with today’s Ferris wheels, what was the first Ferris
wheel like?
