The Jewish Heritage tour was so awesome! Israel Tourism Consultant provided a well organized trip which allowed us to learn so much about Israel, that we will remember for a lifetime. We saw all the events on the itinerary and our guide was knowledgeable about the history of Israel. We were comfortable and had a very nice group of travelers with us, and enough time to ourselves to relax at the pool! Our accommodations were excellent. I&m giving your e-mail and information to two friends who are interested in a tour to Israel. You were attentive to all the details, which made the trip that much better. Thank you so much!

Scientific experiments can sometimes go wrong and when they do the results may range from the disastrous to the troubling. One such experiment took place in South America about fifty years ago. Whether its final consequences will cause serious damage or nothing more than a small trouble still remains to be seen. The story began in 1956 when an American scientist working in Brazil decided to solve the problem of increasing the productivity of that country’s bees. He imported a very active type of African bee from Tanzania and mated (交配)it with the more easy-going native variety to produce a new kind of bees. The new bees worked harder and produced twice as much honey. It seemed that Professor Kerr, for that was the scientist's name, had a total success on his hands. Then things began to go wrong. For some reason as yet unseen, but perhaps as a result of something in their environment, the new bees began to develop extremely attacking personalities. They became bad-tempered and easy to be angry, attacked the native bees and drove them from their living places. But worse was to follow. Having taken over the countryside, the new bees, with their dangerous stings (叮) , began to attack its neighbors -- cats, dogs, horses, chickens and finally man himself. A long period of terror began that has so far killed a great number of animals and about 150 human beings. This would have been bad enough if the bees had stayed in Brazil. But now they are on the move, heading northwards in countless millions towards Central and North America, and moving at the alarming speed of 200 miles a year. The countries that lie in their path are naturally worried because it looks as if nothing can be done to stop them.【小题1】 The results of the South American experiment&&&&&&&&&.A.are not yet certainB.have proved to be wrongC.have caused a serious troubleD.are not important【小题2】 The experiment mentioned in this passage was designed to&&&&&&&&&&&&&.A.make African bees less activeB.make Brazilian bees more easy-goingC.increase the number of bees in BrazilD.increase the amount of honey in Brazil【小题3】 Which of the following may be the cause of the new bees' attacking personalities?A.Their production of honey.B.Their living environment.C.Their hard work.D.Their bad temper.【小题4】 The last paragraph implies that&&&&&&&&&&&&.A.the bees have been driven to Central and North AmericaB.the bees must be stopped from moving northC.the bees may bring about trouble in more countriesD.the bees prefer to live in Brazil

Black Box You never see them, but they're with you every time you fly. They record where you're going, how fast you're traveling and whether everything on your airplane is functioning normally. Their ability to resist almost any disaster makes them seem like something out of a comic (漫画)& book. They're known as the black box. When planes fall from the sky, as a Yemeni airliner did on its way to the Comoros Islands in the Indian Ocean on June 30, 2009, the black box is the best method for identifying what went wrong. So when a French submarine(潜水艇)& discovered its homing signal five days later, it marked a huge step toward determining the cause of the disaster in which 152 passengers were killed. In 1958. Australian scientist David Warren developed a flight-memory recorder that would track basic information like altitude and direction. That was the first model for a black box, which became a requirement on all US commercial flights by 1960. Early models often failed to resist crashes, however, so in 1965 it was completely redesigned. That same year, the Federal Aviation Authority required that the boxes, which were never actually black, be painted orange or yellow to be easier to see. Modem airplanes have two black boxes: a voice recorder, which tracks pilots' conversations, and a flight-data recorder, which monitors fuel levels, engine noises and other operating functions that help experts reconstruct the aircraft's final moments. The boxes can resist powerful force and temperatures up t0 2,OOOoF. They're also able to send out signals from depths of 20,000 ft. Experts believe the boxes from Air France Flight 447 ,& which crashed near Brazil on June 1 , 2009 ,& are in water nearly that deep, but statistics say they're still likely to turn up. In the approximately 20 deep-sea crashes over the past 30 years, only one plane's black boxes were never recovered.【小题1】What can we leam about the black box from the passage?A.It helps an airplane function normally.B.Its ability to avoid disasters is amazing.C.It is necessary equipment on an airplane.D.The idea for its design comes from a comic book.【小题2】From the black box on the Yemeni airliner we can get information about _____.A.the scene of the crash and the damageB.data for analyzing the cause of the crashC.the total number of passengers on boardD.homing signals sent by the pilot before the crash【小题3】The Federal Aviation Authority required the black boxes be painted orange or yellow toA.make them easily identifiedB.meet the international standardsC.caution people to handle them with careD.distinguish them from the color of the plane【小题4】What do we know about the black boxes from Air France Flight 447?A.They have stopped sending homing signals.B.They were destroyed somewhere near Brazil.C.There is an urgent need for them to be restructured.D.There is still a good chance of their being recovered.

The January fashion show, called Future Fashion, exemplified how far green design has come. Organized by the New York-based nonprofit Earth Pledge, the show inspired many top designers to work with sustainable fabrics for the first time. Several have since made pledges to include organic fabrics in their lines. The designers who undertake green fashion still face many challenges. Scott Hahn, a cofounder with Gregory of Rogan and Loomstate, which uses all-organic cotton, says high-quality sustainable materials can still be tough to find. “Most designers with existing labels are finding there aren’t comparable materials that can just replace what you’re doing and what your customers are used to,” he says. For example, organic cotton and non-organic cotton are virtually indistinguishable once woven into a dress. But some popular synthetics, like stretch nylon, still have few eco-friendly equivalents(等同物). Those who do make the switch are finding they have more support. Last year the influential trade show Designers & Agents stopped charging its participation fee for young green entrepreneurs who attend its two springtime shows in Los Angeles and New York and gave special recognition to designers whose collections are at least 25% sustainable. It now counts more than 50 green designers, up from fewer than a dozen two years ago. This week Wal-Mart is set to announce a major initiative aimed at helping cotton farmers go organic: it will buy transitional cotton at higher prices, thus helping to expand the supply of a key sustainable material. “Main-stream is about to occur,” says Hahn. Some analysts are less sure. Among consumers, only 18% are even aware that eco-fashion exists, up from 6% four years ago. Natalie Hormilla, a fashion writer, is an example of the unconverted consumer. When asked if she owned any sustainable clothes, she replied, “Not that I’m aware of.” Like most consumers, she finds little time to shop, and when she does, she’s on the hunt for “cute stuff that isn’t too expensive.” By her own admission, green just isn’t yet on her mind. Babies who are slow to gain weight in the first months of their lives generally catch up to their peers by age 13,a large UK study shows, Researchers said the results would make parents whose babies fail to put on weight quickly less worried. The researchers looked at data from ,11,499 children who took part in a large study, It showed that 507 who were slow to gain weight in the first eight weeks of life recovered fairly quickly and had almost caught up by age 2. Another group of 480 who were slow to gain between eight weeks and nine months continued to put on weight slowly until they were seven years ,but then had a sudden increase and caught up by age 13, The different pattems of recovery between the two groups were likely due to different reasons for slow weight gain ,the researchers said, All the children were still lighter and shorter than their peers by the time they were teenagers ,but within the normal range. The findings highlight the importance of monitoring a baby’s weight and height gain during the first few weeks and months ,but not creating anxiety with parents of slow-growing babies, said the study leader Prof Alan Emond from the University of Bristol.“In the past, a lot of parents have been caused unnecessary anxiety by heaith professionals and this is a positive and reassuring message.”He said in many cases of slow growth where children do not follow the standard’curve’(曲线)it is just because they are following their genetic potential.Dr Simon Newell, vice-president of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, said he broadly agreed with the concluslons of the researchers but stressed that poor weight gain was something that needed to be monitored closely, “I would encourage parents to use growth charts but if measurements show your baby is smaller than averager it may be completely normal, ”he said.【小题1】What can we know from the findings of the research?A.All the cases of slow weight gain in the first months of the babies’ lives are caused by the same reasonB.Slow-growing babies will have the same height and weight with their peers by age13C.Many cases of children whose growth don’t meet the growing standard curve cannot be treated as abnormalD.The findings won’t cause parents’ anxiety so monitoring a baby’s growth from his/her birth is unnecessary【小题2】Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?A.It’s important to monitor a baby’s weight and height gain for new parentsB.New parents should feel anxious about their baby’s weight and height gainC.Researches still couldn’t find the reasons for slow weight gainD.All the children’s weight and height became normal by age 13【小题3】What does the underlined word in the fourth paragraph mean?A.Making sure something is certain to be trueB.Making someone calmer and less anxiousC.Confirming something is to happen againD.Being sure that someone can be attracted【小题4】Which of the statements would Dr Simon Newell agree to?A.To some degree, growth charts can help parents monitor their babies’ weight gainB.It’s abnormal for babies are smaller than averageC.He agreed with the researchers completelyD.Babies’ weight gain can only be monitored and measured by using growth charts.【小题5】The writer wrote this passage in order to&&&&&&&&A.tell us how to help babies grow fasterB.explain why babies are gain weight slowlyC.report on the findings of a research D.reduce the anxiety of some parents

One of my China Dialogue colleagues in Beijing recently bought a Philips energy-saving light bulb to replace a standard one.He was happy with his choice. It may have cost 30 yuan (just under US$4.50) - ten times the price of a filament (灯丝) bulb - but he wanted to save energy as part of his low-carbon lifestyle. And according to the shopkeeper, he would save, in the long run, much more than the 30 yuan he was spending.Yet only one month later, his expensive light bulb blew up, before he had saved even a small part of the purchase price. Will he stick to his high-cost, low-carbon lifestyle?China's environmental organizations have started to advocate low-carbon lifestyles and the decrease of carbon footprints to help fight against climate change. But they have overlooked one fact: in China, low-carbon living comes at a high cost.It means buying energy-saving bulbs and appliances, and environmentally friendly building materials and daily goods.Cost can no longer be the only standard for purchases. An energy-saving and environmentally friendly product is more expensive than a standard alternative - whether it's a simple light bulb or the house it shines. For average consumers, even buying an ordinary bulb is a huge burden. How can we persuade ordinary people to choose an energy-saving residence? This is not a trend they
perhaps this fashion is only for the rich. Most consumers today do not cause huge carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.Their responsibility lies not in choosing a low-carbon lifestyle today, but in avoiding a high-carbon life in the future. The principle of "common but differentiated responsibility" - a basis of sustainable development - can be applied here as well.In China, low-carbon living still is resisted by a lack of social infrastructure(基础设施). Even if your salary allows you to make that choice, nobody is there to help you accomplish it.Consider energy-saving homes. You need to find out whether or not the developer has used natural materia how effective the insulation(绝缘物、隔热物) and what the green credentials of installed equipment are.You can read up a little, but you'll still be lucky to avoid being puzzled by the developers' marketing. Many so-called energy-saving buildings are nothing of the sort, and some are even more energy-hungry than the average home - as Li Taige warned in his article "Energy-efficient buildings? Not always", on China Dialogue last August.【小题1】 What may probably be the best title of this passage?A.To purchase a cheap bulb - your wise alternative. B.To choose an energy-saving residence - a must of your life C.To learn a low-carbon lifestyle - each citizen's responsibility D.To learn a low-carbon lifestyle - a promising but difficult purpose 【小题2】Why does the writer say this fashion is only for the rich in the fourth paragraph?A.Because the cost is a very important standard for purchases.
B.Because buying an ordinary bulb is very expensive.
C.Because energy-saving products are more expensive than the common alternatives. D.Because rich people like to follow this trend. 【小题3】 What does the writer think of energy-saving homes?A.Most of them are environmentally friendly. B.They are musts of low-carbon lifestyle of Chinese. C.They are huge burdens for Chinese people. D.Many of them are more in name than in reality. 【小题4】We can infer from the passage that ____.A.Using energy-saving bulbs and appliances is a fashion. B.It's easy for most Chinese to try to learn a low-carbon lifestyle. C.All citizens in China don’t have the same responsibility in living a low-carbon lifestyle. D.Most Chinese families cannot afford to purchase an energy-saving residence. 【小题5】What is the writer's attitude towards the low-carbon lifestyle?A.informative and entertaining B.supportive but cautious C.negative but wise D.positive and active

The World's Largest Insect .This giant insect can be used as a toy. A child ties one end of a string to a stick and the other end around the "neck" of an insect. Holding the stick, the child lets the insect go. With a loud whirring sound, the insect takes off, pulling the string in a large curve over the child's head. The child laughs as the stick jumps around. The child is African, and the toy is the African Goliath beetle, the largest insect in the world. The Goliath is a true insect because it has six legs and a body that is divided into three parts. Like all beetles, it has two pairs of wings. The front pair are thick and stiff and protect the back pair, which are soft. It is these soft back wings that make the beetle fly forward. They also cause the loud whirring sound the beetle makes when it flies. To steer, the beetle twists and turns its legs the same way you steer a bike by turning its front wheel. African children often use the Goliath beetle as a toy. Although it is over 15 centimeters long, it is quite harmless. 【小题1】 The African Goliath beetle is _______.&A.the world's largest insectB.a toy used in many parts of the worldC.the only insect found in AfricaD.the world's smallest insect【小题2】What do African children often use the Goliath beetle as?A.a tool.B.a toy. Growers around the world are using new methods to grow grapes to make wine. They use natural and organic methods to control harmful insects and weeds instead of using chemicals. Now, a winery in Canada has adopted a natural way to control its grapevines (葡萄藤).The Featherstone Winery is in southern Ontario. The grapevines, like other plants, need to be cut every year. Cutting grapevines must be done very carefully. Only a targeted area of leaves is removed from the lower part of the vines to help the grapes grow better. But at the Featherstone Winery, no man or machine does the cutting. Instead, the job is done by 40 little wooly lambs. David Johnson owns the vineyard. He says he learned about using lambs while visiting wineries in New Zealand. The young lambs are perfectly designed to do the job. They eat the grape leaves on the lower parts of the vine. But they are not tall enough to reach the grapes. They only weigh about 22 kilograms, so they do not beat down the soil. And their waste makes good organic fertilizer. In addition, using the lambs costs much less than hiring workers to cut the vines for seven weeks in summer. And when the cutting is done in August, the lambs become tasty dishes. Mr Johnson says he had a difficult time finding enough lambs to do the job. There are about 50 million lambs in New Zealand. But there are not nearly as many in Ontario. Also, some organic pesticides (杀虫剂) are harmful to lambs. And the lambs must be watched to make sure they do not eat too much of the grapevines. David Johnson says the lambs help him carry out his environmental ideas about farming. They are lovely and peaceful and he likes having them in his vineyard. People visiting the vineyard also enjoy watching the lambs do their job.【小题1】Farmers who grow grapes with natural and organic methods _____.A.don't cut grapevines every year B.don't use chemicals to control harmful insects and weeds C.don't need to control harmful insects and weeds D.don't use organic fertilizer 【小题2】In order to help the grapes grow better, growers _____.A.only have to remove the dead leaves B.need to remove a specific area of leaves C.shouldn't remove any part of the plants D.should let little lambs do the cutting 【小题3】Paragraph 4 is mainly about _____.A.the future of getting lambs to do the cutting B.the worries about using organic pesticides C.the ways to get lambs to do the cutting D.the problems related to lambs doing the cutting 【小题4】We can infer from the passage that David Johnson______.A.owns several wineries in Canada
B.buys lambs from New Zealand C.is concerned about protecting the environment D.loves keeping lambs instead of farming

The next time your face turns red after tripping(绊倒) over your own feet in public, don’t try to hide it—a new study finds that showing your embarrassment actually makes other people view you as more reliable. Researchers at the University of California have carried out the study and found that embarrassment is a good signature of a person to whom you can entrust valuable resources. Not only are the findings useful for people seeking cooperative and reliable team members and business partners, but they also make for helpful dating advice.“Moderate(适度的) levels of embarrassment are signs of virtue. Our data suggests embarrassment is a good thing, not something you should fight.”said Matthew Feinberg, who led the study. While the most typical gesture of embarrassment is a downward gaze to one side while partly covering the face, a person who feels shame, as distinguished(区别) from embarrassment, will typically cover the whole face, Feinberg said. The results were got from a series of experiments. In the first experiment, 60 college students were videotaped describing embarrassing moments, such as making incorrect assumptions(假想) based on appearances. The college students also participated in the “Dictator Game” which is used in economics research to measure altruism(利己主义). For example, each was given 10 raffle tickets(奖券) and asked to keep a share of the tickets and give the reminder(提示物) to a partner. The findings, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, showed that those who showed greater levels of embarrassment tended to give away more of their raffle tickets, indicating(﹦showing) greater generosity. 【小题1】According to the passage, which of the following is thought to be reliable?A.A person who feels shame.
