第二部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分60分)
(共15小题;每小题3分,满分45分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
A German company was concerned about talks in Moscow trying to sell some 100 million dollars worth of equipment to a Russian State company. Talks went smoothly but differences remained. So Martin Bayer himself, the CEO of the German Company, decided to come to Moscow to head the talks. Besides caring about his business, the CEO wanted to go to Russia to hunt bears.
Martin Bayer was one of the greatest hunters of our time (and the Russians knew about it). He went to the Sahara more than hundred times and hunted lions, he hunted polar bears in the North Pole and tigers in the rain forests of India. But he had never hunted Russian bears.
So the Russians decided to organize a bear hunt for Mr. Bayer to sweeten the talks. This wasn't a simple task. Some people in the west still believe that bears may be found and seen everywhere in Russian cities just like squirrels may be seen in our back yards. This is not true. The closest place one may find bears in the wild is maybe 2,500 miles away from Moscow. However, a solution was quickly found. The Russian businessmen went to Moscow Circus(马戏团)and for $2,000 bought a very old bear. This bear used to amuse and amaze audiences in many countries for 30 years, but got and looked too old, and was retired.
“Be careful, the Russian bears are very dangerous, and frightening,” they told to Mr. Bayer. “If compared to the Russian bears, your African lions are nothing more than harmless cats.” The bear was brought to a forest 50 miles from Moscow and was left there. Mr. Bayer was told that bears were plentiful in that forest and that many cattle and even people had been eaten in the surrounding villages.
Meanwhile, an 18-year old female drove through the forest on a motorcycle and suddenly saw a bear (no bears had been seen in those places for 200 years). She was frightened, fell, left her helmet and

  37、答案D。take over表示&把...

as for表示&至于&,用于转移话题;due to表示&由于,归咎于,归功于&;along with表示&随同&;except for表示&要不是&。

Farmers use different kinds of soil conservation methods to protect their land from damage by farming and the forces of nature. One important form of soil conservation is the use of windbreaks.
Windbreaks are barriers (屏障) formed by trees and other plants with many leaves. Farmers plant them in lines around their fields. Windbreaks stop the wind from blowing soil away. They also keep the wind from destroying or damaging crops. They are very important for growing grains, such as wheat.
There have been studies done on windbreaks in parts of West Africa, for example. They found that grain harvests can be twenty percent higher in fields protected by windbreaks compared to fields without such protection.
However, windbreaks seem to work best when they allow a little wind to pass through. If the wall of trees and plants stops wind completely, then violent air motions will take place close to the ground. These motions will lift soil into the air where it will be blown away.
For this reason, a windbreak is best if it has only sixty to eighty percent of the trees and plants needed to make a solid line.
There should be at least two lines in each windbreak. One line should be large trees. The second line, right next to it, can be shorter trees and other plants with leaves. Locally grown trees and plants are best for windbreaks.
1. What is a windbreak according to the passage?
A. A windbreak is a concrete wall to prevent the strong winds.
B. A windbreak is a wood with different kinds of trees.
C. A windbreak is a wall of trees to hold soil in place.
D. A windbreak is a wall of wind to fight wind from the opposite way.
2. When can windbreaks be most effective?
A. The trees are planted one by one.
B. The trees and plants grow in a line.
C. The trees grow as high as they can.
D. Windbreaks allow a little wind to blow through.
3. Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A. A windbreak is one of the best forms of soil conversation.
B. A windbreak is very good for growing grains such as wheat.
C. One line of trees is enough for soil protection.
D. Locally grown trees and plants are the top choice for a windbreak.
Some years ago, writing in my diary used to be a usual activity. I would return from school and spend the expected half hour recording the day’s events, feelings, and impressions in my little blue diary. I did not really need to express my emotions by way of words, but I gained a certain satisfaction from seeing my experiences forever recorded on paper. After all, isn’t accumulating memories a way of preserving the past?
When I was thirteen years old, I went on a long journey on foot in a great valley, well-equipped with pens, a diary, and a camera. During the trip, I was busy recording every incident, name and place I came across. I felt proud to be spending my time productively, dutifully preserving for future generations a detailed description of my travels. On my last night there, I wandered out of my tent, diary in hand. The sky was clear and lit by the glare of the moon, and the walls of the valley looked threatening behind their screen of shadows. I automatically took out my pen…
At that point, I understood that nothing I wrote could ever match or replace the few seconds I allowed myself to experience the dramatic beauty of the valley. All I remembered of the previous few days were the dull characterizations I had set down in my diary.
Now, I only write in my diary when I need to write down a special thought or feeling. I still love to record ideas and quotations that strike me in books, or observations that are particularly meaningful. I take pictures, but not very often—only of objects I find really beautiful. I’m no longer blindly satisfied with having something to remember when I grow old. I realize that life will simply pass me by if I stay behind the camera, busy preserving the present so as to live it in the future.
I don’t want to wake up one day and have nothing but a pile of pictures and notes. Maybe I won’t have as many exact representations
maybe I’ll forget certain facts, but at least the experiences will always remain inside me. I don’t live to make memories—I just live, and the memories form themselves.
1. Before the age of thirteen, the author regarded keeping a diary as a way of ______.
A. observing her school routine
B. expressing her satisfaction
C. impressing her classmates
D. preserving her history
2. What caused a change in the author’s understanding of keeping a diary?
A. A dull night on the journey.
B. The beauty of the great valley.
C. A striking quotation from a book. D. Her concerns for future generations.
3. What does the author put in her diary now?
A. Notes and beautiful pictures.
B. Special thoughts and feelings.
C. Detailed accounts of daily activities.
D. Descriptions of unforgettable events.
4. The author comes to realize that to live a meaningful life is ______.
A. to experience it
B. to live the present in the future
C. to make memories
D. to give accurate representations of it
People may have told you money doesn't grow on trees a million times before. but scientists have confirmed that gold is found in the leaves of some plants. Researchers from Australia say that the presence of the particles(微粒) in an eucalyptus tree's leaves indicates that deposits(矿藏) are buried many meters below. They believe that the discovery offers a new way to locate the valuable metal in difficult-to-reach locations.Dr. Mel Lintern from Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSTRO) said. "We've found a lot of the easy deposits in Australia in this way. Now we are trying to find the more difficult ones that are buried tens of meters below. And the trees are'providing us with a method to be able to do this."
Using the Australian synchrotron - a vast machine that uses X-rays to explore matters in remarkable detail-they found gold in the leaves. twigs and barks of some trees. The amount of the precious metal in an eucalyptus tree's leaves were tiny. "We need 500 eucalyptus trees. Growing over a gold deposit to have enough gold in the trees themselves to make a gold ring," said Dr. Lintern. However, the presence of the particles pointed to richer deposits buried more than 30m below.
Dr. Lintern said, "We believe that the trees are acting like a pump. They are bringing life-giving water from their roots, and in so doing. they are taking smaller dissolved gold particles up into the leaves."
Currently, the metal is found in outcrops(地面岩层). where the ore(矿石) appears at the surface, or it is detected through exploratory drilling. But the researchers said that analyzing plants could offer a better and simpler method to detect untapped gold deposits. Dr. Lintern said. "Not only do we believe it is a way of saving the exploration cost, because exploring for these deposits can be quite expensive, it also minimizes the damage to the environment because we are taking a very small sample from the trees themselves. as well as the leaves and twigs on the ground. The plant-analyzing method is certain to work."

A. A new ways to locate metal deposits is found.

2. According to Dr. Lintern , what helped them find a lot of the easy deposits in Australia?
A. The pump.
B. The water.

D. The machine.
3. Which of the following is NOT true about the plant-analyzing method?

October 10th was the birthday of our school. Our class did a lot for this year’s anniversary celebration. The day before the celebration, we did a thorough cleaning and beautified the schoolyard with balloons and flags, which surely created a festive atmosphere. We also helped prepare an exhibition of school history. On that special day, some of the classmates served as volunteers, welcoming the guests at the school gate. During the celebration, some teachers and students put on performances, which greatly impressed the guests. All the people really had a good time and treasured countless memories.
