ObjectiveTo study the relationship between sleep status and physical and mental healthy status during the time on a reef in the Chinese South Sea.MethodsAll the work, that inquired and noted dawn the times in the forms, was done by the medical workers trained uniformly. The “index” was used by Visual vague scale. ResultsAs the time on the reef prolonged, the sleep status of the personnel has became worse obviously, and the major factors which influenced the sleep were on duty(28.73%), emotion(20.09%), dream( 10.16 %), noise(8.86%) and weather(7.73%), etc. There was obvious correlation between sleep status and physical and mental health status, and the interrelation coefficient was 0.937 to 0.980 (P0.01). Sleep index has remarkable influence on each index of the physical and mental health status (P0.01); however, the sleep time has influence on the index of stamina, healthy, working quality, working enthusiasm, attention and mood principally(P0.05~0.01), and there was no conspicuous on appetite and memory. ConclusionDuring the time on a reef, the major factors which influence the sleep were on duty and emotion, and the sleepstatus has obviously effects on the physical and mental health status.

The effect of experimental sleep fragmentation on error monitoring, , , , , , , , a Department of Psychology, National Chung Cheng University, Chiayi, Taiwan, ROCb Department of Psychology, National Cheng Kung University, Tainan, Taiwan, ROCc Institute of Allied Health Sciences, National Cheng Kung University, Tainan, Taiwan, ROC&Sleep fragmentation with total sleep time unchanged led to poorer sleep quality.&Sleep fragmentation decreased attention and error monitoring processes.&Decreased slow wave sleep was correlated with poorer sleep quality.&Increased light sleep was related to impaired error monitoring functions.Experimental sleep fragmentation (SF) is characterized by frequent brief arousals without reduced total sleep time and causes daytime sleepiness and impaired neurocognitive processes. This study explored the impact of SF on error monitoring. Thirteen adults underwent auditory stimuli-induced high-level (H) and low-level (L) SF nights. Flanker task performance and electroencephalogram data were collected in the morning following SF nights.Compared to LSF, HSF induced more arousals and stage N1 sleep, decreased slow wave sleep and rapid-eye-movement sleep (REMS), decreased subjective sleep quality, increased daytime sleepiness, and decreased amplitudes of P300 and error-related positivity (Pe). SF effects on N1 sleep were negatively correlated with SF effects on the Pe amplitude. Furthermore, as REMS was reduced by SF, post-error accuracy compensations were greatly reduced. In conclusion, attentional processes and error monitoring were impaired following one night of frequent sleep disruptions, even when total sleep time was not reduced.KeywordsSleep disruption; Microarousal; Attention; Action monitoring; Cognitive performance

Aim: To devise a new method for testing the animal model of sleep apnea syndrome (SAS). Methods: We simultaneously monitoring the respiratory wave through a micro-pressure transducer and the electrical signals of both electrocorticogram (ECoG) and electromyogram (EMG), for detecting the sleep-wake states and the respiratory rhythm in rats. The recording data are analyzed by the manual-computer work. Results: The ECoG and EMG signals are stable and easily to distinguish. We can accurately detect the sleep-wake state and the sleep apnea events in rats by these signals. Conclusion: The method is reliable to test the small animal model of SAS, and is easily to operate.
