如:and, but, or, nor, so, therefore, yet, however, for, hence, as well as, both...and, notonly...butalso, either...or, neither...nor, (and)then 等等。
1)and与or:判断改错: (错) They sat down and talk about something. (错) They started to dance and sang. (错) I saw two men sitting behind and whisper there. (对) They sat down and talked about something.(对) They started to dance and sing.(对) I saw two men sitting behind and whispering there. Make up your mind, and you'll get the chance.=If you make up your mind, you'll get the chance. &&&&&&& One more effort, and you'll succeed.=If you make one more effort, you'll succeed. 2)both...and 两者都 如:She plays(both) the piano and the guitar. 3)not only...but(also), as well as 不但… She plays not only the piano, but(also) the guitar. 注意:not only…but also关联两个分句时,一个分句因有否定词not而必须倒装。 如:Not only does he like reading stories, but also he can even write some. Neither you nor he is to blame.比较so和such :
so与such的用法由不同词性决定。such是形容词,修饰名词或名词词组,so是副词,只能修饰形容词或副词。so还可与表示数量的形容词many,few,much,little连用,形成固定搭配。 构成:so+adj. &&&&&&&&&&& such+a(n)+n. &&&&&&&&&&& so+adj.+a(n)+n. &&&&&&&&&&& such+n.(pl.) &&&&&&&&&&& so+adj.+n.(pl.) &&&&&&&&&&& such+n.(pl.) &&&&&&&&&&& so+adj.+n.[不可数]&&&&&&&&&&&&&such+n.[不可数] 如:so foolish&&&&&&& &such a fool&&&&&&&&&&so nice a flower& &&&&&&& such a nice flower& &&&&&&& so many/few flowers& &&&&&&& such nice flowers&&&&&&& &so much/ little money. &&&&&&& such rapid progress &&&&&&& so many people &&&&&&& such a lot of people 注:so many 已成固定搭配,a lot of 虽相当于many,但a lot of为名词性的,只能用such搭配。 so...that与such...that之间的转换既为so与such之间的转换。 并列连词用法点拨:
I must work hard, or I'll fail in the exam. Either you or I am right. Some people love cats, while others hate them. 典型例题:—Would you like to come to dinner tonight? —I'd like to, ___ I'm too busy. &&& A. and&&& B. so&&& C. as&&&&D. but 答案:D。 2)not...but... They were not the bones of an animal, but(the bones) of a human being. 3、表示原因关系: 1)for 判断改错: (错)For he is ill, he is absent today. (对)He is absent today, for he is ill.& for是并列连词,不能置于含两个并列分句的句子的句首,只能将其放在两个分句中间。
比较and和or的用法:
There is no air or water in the moon. &&&&&&& There is no air and no water on the moon. 典型例题: —I don't like chicken___fish. —I don't like chicken, ___I like fish very much. A. and;andB. and;butC. or;butD. or;and 答案:C。 判断改错: (错)We will die without air and water. (错)We can't live without air or water. (对)We will die without air or water. (对)We can't live without air and water.

就……”,相当于as soon as。如:The minute he saw her he fell in love. && Telephone me the moment(that) you get the results. &I was so tired that I fell asleep the instant I closed my eyes. Sheputdownthereceiverthesecondsherecognizedmyvoice. 另外,有的个别副词(如directly/immediately等)也可表示类似意思。如: Immediately the meal was over,he switchedon the radio.
His wife left him thes pring he went abroad.在他出国的那年春天,他的妻子离开了他。 He sold his house and went to the souththe summer he lost hisjob.在他失业的那年夏天,他卖掉房子去了南方。 He was sentto prison the winter his third daughter was born.在他第三个女儿出生的那年冬天,他被关进了监狱。 She got married the autumn she graduated from college.她大学毕业的那年秋天就结婚了。 三、the+时间名词:其中的时间名词主要包括hour, day, night, week, month, season, year等,其意为“在……的时候、那天、那个晚上、那周、那个月、那个季节、那年”。如: The hour he wa sin her office,he felt very sad.当他在她办公室的时候,他感到很伤心。 The day here turned home, his father was already dead.他回家的那一天,他的父亲已经死了。 The night I wenttoseeher, shehadleftforBeijingtoattendanimportantmeeting.就我去看她的那个晚上,她到北京去开一个重要的会议了。 Mr Smith didn't go to work the week his wife was ill.史密斯先生在他妻子生病的那个星期没去上班。 They ear helivedinthecountry,he learned alot.他在乡下呆的那一年,他学到了不少东西。 四、the+序数词+time 其中的序数词包括first, second, third, fourth等,其意为“当第几次……的时候”。如: My girlfriend beat me at pokert he first time weplayed.我头一次和女朋友打扑克,她就把我赢了。 These cond time I saw her,she looked like an old woman.我第二次见到她时,她看上去像一个老太婆。 The third time I went there,I found all of them had left and the offices were all empty.我第三次去那儿时,我发现他们都离开了,所有的办公室都是空的。 注:1.next,last也具有类似序数词的性质,因此也具有以上用法。如: Nexttimeyoucomein, pleaseclosethedoor.下次你进来,请关门。 Thelasttimewetalkedhesaidheneededanothertwodays.上次我们谈话时他说他还需要两天。 2.thefirsttime,thesecondtime,thethirdtime等用作连词引导时间状语从句时,其前通常要有定冠词,而(the)nexttime,(the)lasttime引导状语从句时,其中的冠词可以省略,如下面这道上海高考题,其答案是C,不是A:I though ther nice and honest______Imether. A.first time& B.fo rthe first time C.the first timeD.by the first time 五、不定代词+time 其中的不定代词主要包括each, every, any等。如:Every time I ringher, the phone is engaged.我每次给她打电话,电话都占线。 Every time I see him he either wants to tell me his trouble or borrow some money.每次我见到他,他不是向我诉苦,就是要向我借钱。 He felt nervous each times he spoke to him.每次她和他讲话,他都感到紧张。 AnytimeyoucometoLondondolookmeup.你无论什么时候到伦敦来,一定要来看我。 注意:everytime, eachtime, anytime用作连词引导状语从句时其前习惯上不用冠词,它与the first time, these cond time, the third time等引导时间状语从句时其前必须要用定冠词不同。 六、其他名词结构以上归纳的名词结构均用于引导时间状语从句,有些其他结构还可引导其他性质的状语从句,如the way可用于引导方式状语从句,表示“像……一样”。如: The didn’t do it the way we do now.那时他们不像我们现在这样行事。 Joyce looked at me the way alotof girls did.乔伊丝像许多姑娘那样瞧着我。 注:这样用的theway与as用法相似。如:Hold itin both hands, the way(=as)Mummy does.用两只手捧住,像妈妈那样。

Dave Johnson at the Campaign for America’s Future writes—:
There are lots of stories in the media claiming that the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is dead for now.
And why wouldn’t TPP be dead? Both presidential candidates say they are opposed to TPP. Various Congressional leaders have said that it is unlikely to come up. Nancy Pelosi has spoken out against it. Harry Reid
opposes it. All labor and environmental organizations along with most consumer, health, human rights and other progressive-aligned groups oppose TPP. Six Republican members of Congress who voted for the “fast track” Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) have
opposing TPP. Even the Tea Party opposes TPP, calling it “Obamatrade.” Under these circumstances, the very idea that it could come up for a vote at all, never mind that it might even pass, .
But here’s the thing: Wall Street wants TPP and the giant multinational corporations want TPP. And what Wall Street and giant multinational corporations want from Congress, Wall Street and giant multinational corporations usually get from Congress. It’s not like insulting democracy is a big no-no to that crowd. So did you really think TPP would just go away? [...]
The bottom line is that we all need to stay aware, we need to stay organized and we need to understand that TPP isn’t dead until it’s actually dead. But we can win this. If we can keep TPP from coming up for a vote in the unaccountable lame-duck session of Congress that follows the election, it is unlikely to survive.
The key is to get House Democrats on record before the election as opposing TPP, and then getting them to lobby the 28 Democrats who supported the “fast track” Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) to oppose a vote after the election. [...]

Damn, there are few human beings more contemptible than Katherine Harris. Not content to just subvert democracy, she now goes around the country . And not just any old shit, but tall tales about terrorist attacks..
Republican Rep. Katherine Harris said Wednesday she regrets concerns caused by her claim that a plot existed to blow up the power grid in Carmel, Ind. City officials disputed the claims of a plot.
"I was told in an open, group setting that a recent situation threatened a Midwestern community and that it had been diffused," Harris said Wednesday. "I regret that I had no knowledge of the sensitive nature of this situation and any undue concern this may have caused." [...]

Chicago, Chicago. What can we say? Where do we even begin? Sigh.
that IPRA—Chicago’s Independent Police Review Agency, tasked with investigating officer misconduct as well as officer-involved shootings—made absolutely “no mention in quarterly reports in recent years of dozens of incidents in which officers fired their weapons and had no records at all of six shooting incidents” in particular. That’s according to a report released on Tuesday by the city’s inspector general.
"We can only report about what the Police Department notifies us about," IPRA spokeswoman Mia Sissac said Tuesday, adding that the department reported, though was not required to report shooting incidents in which no one was struck.
The report revealed discrepancies in the reporting of incidents in which someone was shot, in which nobody was hit, and in incidents in which officers used Tasers or what is commonly known as pepper spray.
According to the report, IPRA underreported by 49 the number of incidents in which officers fired their weapons but did not hit anyone between late 2007 — the year IPRA was created — and 2014. The report also found that IPRA reported 32 fewer incidents in which officers used Tasers than actually occurred from the fourth quarter of 2013 and the third quarter of 2014. During the same period, IPRA reported seven incidents in which officers dispensed pepper spray canisters —a fraction of the 126 actual incidents, according the inspector general.
Chicago, Chicago. If it ain’t ,
with you. Tsk tsk tsk.

Former presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson continues to stump for Trump. He continues to be uniquely bad at it, but his latest attempt—an explanation to the Mourning Joe crowd of why you don't hear stories of Donald Trump helping people, or Donald Trump being kind, or any similar anecdotes—.
"I'm–then hopeful that he will begin to put–to put out many of the stories that I am very familiar with, of things that he has done to help people who have been in very, very difficult situations.
You know, he–he feels that, you know, that's self-praising, he doesn't want to do it."
That's right. The reason Donald Trump has not been sharing stories of things he has done to help people is because Donald Trump feels uncomfortable with self-praise.
Oh, he could tell you stories of the kind and generous things he's done—but that would be bragging, and Donald Trump is uncomfortable with bragging.
And his surrogates? His convention speakers? His close personal friends, like Dr. Ben Carson, who have been told stories of Donald Trump's kindness and wish they could share them with us? Oh, how they long to, but Donald forbids. His modesty—it is too much.

The Supreme Court put a temporary hold Wednesday on a court order that would have allowed a transgender Virginia teen to use the bathroom consistent with his gender identity. Adam Liptak :
The vote was 5 to 3, with Justice Stephen G. Breyer joining the court’s more conservative members “as a courtesy.” He said that this would preserve the status quo until the court decided whether to hear the case. Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan dissented.
The court’s order has no effect on any other case.
The temporary hold was not a ruling on the merits of the case but it will block the teen, Gavin Grimm, from using the boy's restroom when he returns to school in the fall. The original order came from the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, which had
in his lawsuit against the Gloucester County School Board's policy prohibiting him from using the male restroom. The three-judge panel ruled in April that policy was a violation of sex discrimination under Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972.

Senators Christopher Coons and Sheldon Whitehouse have sent a letter to Ted Cruz in his role as chairman of the oversight subcommittee of the Senate Judiciary Committee. The opening of their letter .
We write to express our concern regarding recent remarks made by presidential nominee Donald Trump and the threat of foreign influence in U. S. elections. … When asked if he would call on Russian President Vladimir Putin to stay out of the United States’ presidential election, Mr. Trump stated: “Russia, if you’re listening, I hope you’re able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing … I think you’ll be rewarded mightily by our press.” Mr. Trump’s apparent encouragement of a foreign cyberattack on presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, a U. S. citizen and former Secretary of State, is dangerous and irresponsible.
Donald Trump has loosed so much WTF in the first two days of this week that calling on a foreign power to interfere with the election seems like old news. However, Trump’s multiple connections to Russia, and specifically to Putin, continue to unfold and once the stories of the moment are in the past, there are still some very serious concerns about Trump’s actions and statements.
What are the odds that Ted Cruz will actually convene a hearing to consider Trump’s “please come screw with our election” request? Who knows? It’s Ted Cruz and Donald Trump. Calculating those interactions would make Heisenberg throw up his hands. But the formal request has to be seriously tickling Cruz’s sense of revenge—the most important sense for both Trump and Cruz.
To ensure the integrity of the presidential election and its insulation from Russian cyber threats, we ask that you conduct an oversight hearing to consider whether existing federal criminal statues and federal court jurisdiction sufficiently address conduct related to foreign entities that could undermine our elections.
Dear Ted, can we come up with something to lock up Trump and throw away the key? Tempting … tempting … hmmm.

This man is certainly spending his last months in office in style, both in an
and unofficial capacity. Here he is, : "This is what a feminist looks like." He writes about "watching my daughters grow up into smart, funny, kind, wonderful young women."
Now, the most important people in my life have always been women. I was raised by a single mom, who spent much of her career working to empower women in developing countries. I watched as my grandmother, who helped raise me, worked her way up at a bank only to hit a glass ceiling. I’ve seen how Michelle has balanced the demands of a busy career and raising a family. ...
So I’d like to think that I’ve been pretty aware of the unique challenges women face—it’s what has shaped my own feminism. But I also have to admit that when you’re the father of two daughters, you become even more aware of how gender stereotypes pervade our society. You see the subtle and not-so-subtle social cues transmitted through culture. You feel the enormous pressure girls are under to look and behave and even think a certain way. […]
As a parent, helping your kids to rise above these constraints is a constant learning process. Michelle and I have raised our daughters to speak up when they see a double standard or feel unfairly judged based on their gender or race—or when they notice that happening to someone else. It’s important for them to see role models out in the world who climb to the highest levels of whatever field they choose. And yes, it’s important that their dad is a feminist, because now that’s what they expect of all men. [emphasis added]
That's our president, a man who instills in his daughters a sense of right and wrong, of justice, and the expectation that this is what they'll demand of all men—what society needs to demand of men. The , but worth pointing out nonetheless.
It's a beautiful column, one that I would quote here in its entirety if copyright laws didn't prevent it. So go follow that link and read the whole thing.

Marilyn Mosby, the Baltimore state attorney tasked with seeking justice in the April 2015 death of Freddie Gray, dropped the charges against two of the six officers who had yet to stand trial at the end of July. Mosby’s decision came
of being culpable in Gray’s death from injuries sustained in a “rough ride” in the police department’s transport van. That should be the end of the case, right? Wrong. T not by a long shot. And Mother Jones is going to tell you :
All six of the officers will face an internal affairs review
Five of the six officers that were charged are suing Mosby for defamation and false arrest in civil court
Two private citizens have filed complaints with the Maryland Attorney Grievance Commission to have Mosby disbarred for bringing the charges against the cops in the first place
Baltimore’s police union upped its membership dues to pay for the six cops’ legal expenses, and they’re going to keep the higher rate, they say, as a precaution against possible Mosby “malicious prosecutions.”

The money the Obama administration has managed to cobble together to fight Zika is , while the Republican Congress yawns. One of the biggest yawners is Missouri Republican Sen. Roy Blunt, chair of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on the Department of Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies, one of the key committees that is supposed to be responding to public health crises. For
Blunt has been ignoring the crisis and his opponent, Democrat Jason Kander, has been pushing him on it.
Kander has some back up now, from .
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Health professionals from across the state of Missouri called on Senator Blunt and his colleagues in Congress to cut short a seven week recess and fund a comprehensive approach to combat the Zika virus. The letter, copied below, came after the first cases of the Zika virus transmitted by mosquitoes in the continental U.S. were reported last week. […]
Today’s letter, signed by 11 doctors and nurses, calls on Senator Blunt and his colleagues to cut their recess short and return to Washington so they can finish funding a comprehensive response to the Zika crisis. If Congress waits until September to pass a deal, funding to develop a vaccine may have run out, a major setback to progress.
“We need a bill that will help protect Missourians from this virus, and one that will help speed up progress on a vaccine so we can eventually eliminate the threat of this virus,” the letter reads. “Missourians don’t get to take a vacation for seven weeks without doing their job, Senator Blunt, and neither should you. It’s time to get back to Washington and do what we elected you to do six years ago—work across the aisle, pass legislation, and keep us safe.”
Missouri now has
as of this Tuesday, all of which are travel-related. As of June,
were in pregnant women. What does Roy Blunt have to say to those women?

The story of Ileana Garcia gives us a little glimpse into the Trump campaign’s “efforts” to reach Latino voters. Garcia, a former radio host and founder of Latinas for Trump, was approached to conduct Latino outreach for Trump. But she apparently overstepped at the RNC when she declared herself a national Latino spokesperson for the campaign. That’s when the relationship went south,
Adrian Carrasquillo:
“Do whatever the fuck you want,” the [Florida Trump] official said to Garcia, according to the source. “I don’t know what I’m going to do with you, anyway.”
Oops! Seems they wanted to confine her to Florida because going "national" was a little too much Latino exposure for the Trump train. Poor Reince had such high hopes.
“I know Donald Trump is going to be doing a Hispanic engagement tour coming up soon… He understands we need to grow the party,” Reince Priebus said a day before the Republican convention. The RNC Hispanic political and media team — comprising Jennifer Korn, Helen Aguirre Ferre, and Sofia Boza — spoke with the Trump campaign and delivered a Latino outreach playbook.
But that plan is gathering dust, Republican operatives said, and the “engagement tour” hasn’t happened.
Canceled: July 5 event with San Antonio business leaders and Texas Republicans.
Canceled: July 8 roundtable with Cuban business and faith leaders in Miami.
“I think they couldn’t get enough people to come to the event because their support among Hispanic voters is 14%. What do they expect?” said Artemio Muniz, a Republican from Texas who was aware of the event and opposes Trump.
Just like with GOTV efforts in battleground states, the Trump campaign has reportedly left the RNC to make up for its shortfalls with Latino outreach. Apparently that’s “the best!” Trump can do.

The latest New Hampshire polling suggests that it doesn't matter how much GOP candidates
from Donald Trump—if they're still endorsing him, voters take note. Anthony Brooks :
The WBUR poll also found the presidential contest is having a big effect on New Hampshire's Senate race between the incumbent Republican, Kelly Ayotte, and the Democrat, Gov. Maggie Hassan. According to the poll, Hassan now leads by 10 points in a race that could determine which party will control the Senate.
"There's a very close relationship between the votes for Kelly Ayotte and Donald Trump," pollster Koczela said. "Their support is sort of locked together. And with the direction that Donald Trump seems to be heading in, Kelly Ayotte's task is to somehow decouple those two."
Trump = Toxic. The , three months ago, had Hassan leading Ayotte by just two points, virtually a toss up.
