A frail old man lived with his son, his daughter-in-law, and his four-year-old grandson. His eyes were blurry, his hands trembled, and his step faltered.一位虚弱的老人和他的儿子、儿媳还有四岁的孙子住在一起。他双眼模糊，两手颤抖，步履蹒跚。The family would eat together nightly at the dinner table. But the elderly grandfather's shaky hands and failing sight made eating rather difficult. Peas rolled off his spoon, drooping to the floor. Still, the only words the couple had for him were sharp admonitions when he dropped a fork or spilled food. Then tears streamed down their cheeks. Though no words were spoken, both knew what must be done. 保存至快速回贴一篇英语完型~Researchers are placing robotic dogs(机器狗) in the homes of lonely old people to determine whether they can improve the quality of life for humans.Alan Beck,an expert in human-animal relationship,and Nancy Edwards,a professor of nursing,are leading the animal-assisted study concerning the influence of robotic dogs on old people’s depression,physical activity,and life satisfaction.“No one will argue that an older person is better off being more active,challenged,or stimulated(刺激),”Edwards points out.“The problem is how we promote(使……成为现实) that,especially for those without friends or help.A robotic dog could be a solution.”In the study,the robot,called AIBO,is placed for six weeks in the houses of some old people who live alone.Before placing AIBO in the home,researchers will collect baseline data for six weeks.These old people will keep a diary to note their feelings and activity before and after AIBO.Then,the researchers will review the data to determine if it has inspired any changes in the life of its owner.“I talk to him all the time,and he responds to my voice,” says a seventy-year-old lady,“When I’m watching TV,he’ll stay in my arms until he wants down.He has a mind of his own.”The AIBOs respond to certain orders.The researchers say they have some advantages over live dogs,especially for old people.Often the elderly are disabled and cannot care for an animal by walking it or playing with it.A robotic dog removes exercise and feeding concerns.“At the beginning,it was believed that no one would relate to the robotic dog,because it was metal and not furry.” Beck says.“But it’s amazing how quickly we have given up that belief.”“Hopefully,down the road,these robotic pets could become a more-valuable health helper.They will record their masters’ blood pressure,oxygen levels.Or heart rhythms.AIBOs may even one day have games that can help stimulate older people’s minds.”PS：我做的练习是完型但网上好像只有阅读的版本,疑问：1 “No one will argue that an older person is better off being more active,challenged,or stimulated(刺激),”是什么意思（主要是那个off）2 “I talk to him all the time,and he responds to my voice,” 一句中responds to为什么不能是reacts at（这两项选项中都有）
1、off在英文中有很多意思,其中,作为介词有一个意思是：表示来源,从……我的理解是这样的,“没有人会不同意这样的说法,一位老人在更加活跃、充满挑战和刺激的情况下会变的更好.”2、respond to 靠近语言上的回答,而react at 比较注重行动上的回应.希望能帮到你.
