In the United States, friendships can be close, constant, intense, generous, and real, yet fade away in a short time if circumstances (环境) change. Neither side feels hurt by this. Both may exchange Christmas greeting for a year or two, perhaps a few letters for a while --- then no more. If the same two people meet again by chance, even years later, they pick up the friendship where it left off and are delighted. In the States, you can feel free to visit people’s homes, share their holidays, enjoy their children and their lives without fear that you are taking on a lasting obligation. Do not hesitate to accept hospitality because you cannot give it in return. No one will expect you to do so for they know you are far from home. Americans will enjoy welcoming you and be pleased if you accept their hospitality easily. Once you arrive there, the welcome will be full and warm and real. Most visitors find themselves readily invited into many homes there. In some countries it is considered inhospitable to entertain at home, offering what is felt as “merely” home cooked food, not “doing something” for your guest. It is felt that restaurant entertaining shows more respect and welcome. Or for various other reasons, such as crowded space, language difficulties, or family custom, outsiders are not invited into homes. In the United States, both methods are used, but it is often considered more friendly to invite a person to one’s home than to go to a public place, except in purely business relationships. So, if your host or hostess brings you home, do not feel that you are being shown inferior (差的) treatment. Don’t feel neglected (被忽视) if you do not find flowers awaiting you in your hotel room either. Flowers are very expensive there, hotel delivery (递送,投递) is uncertain, arrival times are delayed, changed, or canceled – so flowers are not customarily (通常) sent as a welcoming touch. Please do not feel unwanted! Outward signs var the inward welcome is what matters, and this will be real.【小题1】In the United States, you will find friendships __________ if circumstances change.A.die suddenlyB.pass awayC.disappear graduallyD.last forever【小题2】Americans _________ their foreign friends to make a return for their hospitality.A.askB.wishC.never allowD.don’t expect【小题3】In some other countries, giving a dinner party at home is considered _______ than in a restaurant.A.less formalB.less hospitableC.more naturalD.more popular【小题4】According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?A.Flowers are available at all time.B.Flowers are expensive.C.Flowers are signs of outward welcome.D.Flowers are not necessarily sent to guests.【小题5】Which of the following is the best title for this passage?A.American HospitalityB.American FriendshipsC.American InvitationD.American Welcome
Almost every child is scared of something, from monsters in the cupboard to dogs in the park. But the fact that such fears are common and normal doesn’t mean they can be taken lightly. Kids experience fears and phobias(恐惧症) much more strongly than adults. And the influence of the fear can be physical as well as psychological (心理的). It can build up so they almost seem scared of everything--a kind of childhood anxiety. Dr. Creswell says: “Your child may always seem to expect the worst to happen and lack confidence in his or her ability to deal with any challenge.” So don’t make the same old mistake of treating them as if they’re silly for being a“scaredy cat”. Handling the fears is essential.Children can be born nervous and, if you have such a baby, you’ll tend to prevent them from getting worried. So if they fear dogs, you’ll keep them away from dogs, but in fact that can just confirm to the child that dogs are scary. What is worse, keeping your child away from what they fear can turn that feeling into a phobia. Instead, you should encourage them to get in touch with the thing they fear, in a safe and supportive environment. Dr. Andy Field, a researcher of childhood fears, says: “You shouldn’t force, for example, a dog anxious child to go up to a dog. But you can approach it yourself, show them there is nothing to be afraid of, stroke( 抚摸) it, and talk about the dog being friendly. Once your child dares to stroke a dog-one that’s good with children, of course---then you should encourage them to carry on until they feel calmer, and reward them for‘being brave’.”【小题1】Children’s fears are usually taken lightly because&&&&.A.they will not develop into phobiasB.their influence is psychologicalC.they exist widely in the worldD.they will disappear gradually【小题2】If we fail to help children to overcome fears, they will&&&.A.make the same old mistake B.overcome them by themselvesC.experience the worst of thingsD.grow up lacking self-confidence【小题3】According to Dr. Andy Field, if a child is afraid of a cat, parents should&&&&.A.tell the child not to be afraid of itB.show the child how to approach itC.keep the child away from itD.ask the child to stroke it
One might expect that the&ever-growing demands of the tourist trade would bring nothing but good for the countries that receive the&holiday-makers. Indeed, a rosy&picture is painted for the long-term future of the holiday industry. Every month sees the building of a new hotel somewhere,&and every month another rock-bound Pacific island is advertised as the 'last paradise(天堂) on&earth'. However, the scale and&speed of this growth seem set&to destroy the very things tourists want to enjoy. In those countries where there&was a rush to&make quick&money out of sea-side holidays, over-crowded beaches and the&concrete jungles of&endless hotels have begun to lose their appeal. Those countries with little experience of tourism can&suffer most. In recent&years,&Nepal set out to attract foreign visitors to fund developments in health and&education. Its forests, full of&wildlife and rare flowers, were&offered to tourists as one more untouched paradise. In&fact, the nature all too&soon felt the effects of thousands of holiday-makers traveling through the forest land.&Ancient tacks became major routes for the&walkers, with the consequent exploitation of&precious trees and plants. Not only can the environment of a country suffer from the sudden growth of tourism. The people as well rapidly feel its effects. Farmland makes way for hotels, the old way of life goes. The one-time farmer is now the servant of&some multi-n he is&no longer his own master. Once it was his bac now it is his smile that is exploited. No doubt he wonders whether he wasn't happier in&his village working his own land. Thankfully, the tourist industry is waking up to the responsibilities it has towards those countries that receive its customers. The protection of wildlife and the creation of national parks go hand in hand with tourist development and in fact obtain financial support from tourist companies. At the same time, tourists are being encouraged to respect not only the countryside they visit but also its people. The way tourism is handled in the next ten years will decide its fate and that of the countries we all want to visit. Their needs and problems are more important than those of the tourist companies. Increased understanding in planning world-wide tourism can preserve the market for these companies. If not, in a few years’ time the very things that attract tourists now may well have been destroyed.【小题1】What does the author indicate in the last sentence of Paragraph 1?A.The Pacific Island is a paradise.B.The Pacific Island is worth visiting.C.The advertisement is not convincing.D.The advertisement is not impressive【小题2】The example of Nepal is used to suggest _________.A.its natural resources are untouchedB.its forests are exploited for farmlandC.it develops well in health and educationD.it suffers from the heavy flow of tourists.【小题3】What can we learn about the farmers from Paragraph 4?A.They are happy to work their own lands.B.They have to please the tourists for a living.C.They have to struggle for their independence.D.They are proud of working in multi-national organizations.【小题4】Which of the following determines the future of tourism?A.The number of touristsB.The improvement of services.C.The promotion of new products.D.The management of tourism【小题5】The author’s attitude towards the development of the tourist industry is __________.A.optimisticB.doubtfulC.objectiveD.negative
Once in a blue moon,(极为罕见) there is one on New Year's Eve. Revelers ringing in 2010 will be treated to a so-called blue moon. According to popular definition, a blue moon is the second full moon in a month. But don't expect it to be blue - the name has nothing to do with the color of our closest celestial(天空的) neighbor. A full moon occurred on December 2. It will appear again on Thursday in time for the New Year's countdown. The New Year's Eve blue moon will be visible in the United States, Canada, Europe, South America and Africa. For partygoers in Australia and Asia, the full moon does not show up until New Year's Day, making January a blue moon month for them.A full moon occurs every 29.5 days, and most years have 12. On average, an extra full moon in a month - a blue moon - occurs every 2.5 years. The last time there was a lunar double take was in May 2007. New Year's Eve blue moons are rarer, occurring every 19 years. The last time was in 1990; the next one won't come again until 2028.“Blue moons have no astronomical significance,” said Greg Laughlin, an astronomer at the University of California. “`Blue moon' is just a name in the same sense as a `hunter's moon'(a full moon in octorber) or a `harvest moon,'” Laughlin said in an e-mail.The popular definition of blue moon came about after a writer for Sky & Telescope magazine in 1946 misinterpreted the Maine Farmer's Almanac and labeled a blue moon as the second full moon in a month. Alfred Alder, a famous psychiatrist, had an interesting experience. When he was a small boy he got off to a poor start in arithmetic. His teacher got the idea that he had no ability in arithmetic, and told his parents what she thought in order that they would not expect too much of him. In this way, they too developed the idea, “Isn’t it too bad that Alfred can’t do arithmetic?” He accepted their mistaken estimate of his ability, feeling that it was useless to try, and that he was very poor at arithmetic, just as they expected. One day he became very angry at the teacher and the other students because they laughed when he said he saw how to do a problem which none of the other students had been able to solve. Adler succeeded in solving the problem. This gave him confidence. He rejected the idea that he couldn’t do arithmetic and was determined to show them that he could. His anger and his new found confidence stimulated him to go at arithmetic problems with a new spirit. He now worked with interest, determination, and purpose, and he soon became extraordinarily good at arithmetic. He not only proved that he could do arithmetic, but he learned early in life from his own experience that, if a person goes at a job with determination and purpose, he may astonish himself as well as others by his ability. This experience made him realize that many people have more ability than they think they have, and that lack of success is as often the result of lack of knowledge of how to apply one’s ability, lack of confidence, and lack of determination as it is the result of lack of ability.【小题1】Alfred gained confidence in learning arithmetic_______.A.after he managed to find a solution to a difficult problemB.after his teacher made his parents know his ability in arithmeticC.after he grew up and became famousD.after his parents gave him encouragement【小题2】In Alfred’s opinion, if a person is unsuccessful, he may be_______.A.slow- thinking.B.disabled C.self-centered D.undetermined【小题3】The last sentence of paragraph 1 implies________.A.Alfred thought he couldn’t change others’ mindB.Alfred agreed with the wrong judgmentC.Alfred believed it was no use learning arithmeticD.Alfred expected that he could succeed though it was hard【小题4】What can we conclude from the text?A.Alfred has a strong determination and a firm beliefB.Others’ opinions are importantC.A person lacking in ability can still succeed D.Alfred’s teacher and classmates will regret.
