　　The important thing in life is to have a great goal and the determination to attain it. Living without a goal is like sailing without a compass. Lack of purpose is the cause of most of our failures. When a great aim has been decided on, determination and persistence are most important. A story about Mao Zedong's willpower not to smoke is a good example of this kind of willpower applied for the short term, an example the young person might apply to his or her determination to work for the long term. Mao was addicted to cigarettes. At the Chongqing Negotiations, he was observed to have an unusual expression on his face. When the talks were over, Jiang Jieshi said, "He likes cigarettes as much as he does his life, but when he learned that I don't smoke, in the course of our talks, he never smoked even a single cigarette." We can never despise Mao Zedong's determination and will! You can see that nothing is impossible for a willing heart.

Many organizational analysts and career consultants consider persistence to be ultimate key to success at both the organizational and personal level. Successful people also fail occasionally, but they do not let their failures defeat their spirit. Learning from defeats, they revise strategy as needed and try again, and again, and again, until they succeed. In everyone's heart, there is that kind of pure green and the pure desire for success. 　　It is easy to describe success in terms of money, fame and reputation. But I believe that success is not external. I believe that success comes from within. My definition of success is to be true to yourself, and be true to others. That means, that you must cherish your personal ideal even in the face of adversity. I also believe that success is not discriminatory. Success is not restricted to such a class of people, in fact, it may be achieved by any person irrespective of his race, creed, gender and economic background. A good example of success is that of Beethoven. He is one of the world's most famous composers, yet he was deaf. He could not hear the majestic pieces of music that he created. Yet, in the face of this adversity, he was able to maintain his ideals--that of composing music.
　　To exemplify what success means to me, I pose a question to all of you. What brings us together here today? I believe that it is the beauty of the spoken word. The effect of pause and the sound of rhetoric are unique to the spoken word. I believe the beauty of the spoken word is even stronger for those who have difficulty in expressing themselves. These people are reclusive and had their emotions hidden within them. I once went to Australia and I saw two pictures, Once was drawn by a normal child, the other was drawn by a child with social inhibitions. The picture drawn by the normal child was simple and plain. The other was life-like, full of details and imagination. What this shows is that these are ideas, emotions and feelings that are locked internally in these children.
　　My ideal is to be the key, spreading the beauty of the spoken words to these children. These children have been neglected, but I feel that I can and should help these children to find themselves and be able to express themselves.
　　I realize that this is a difficult task, and there are many obstacles on the way. But I believe in my ideals and I will stick to them--even in the face of adversity. We should never have a premature abortion of ideals--let the child, let our ideals, stand the challenge. For a life without ideals is not living.

What is the definition of success? I believe different people will have different opinions about it. If anyone asks me what is success for me, I will tell him progress is success for me. I can have small goal or great aim in my whole life. If the goal what I set is too large for me, I will not taste the feeling of success. Or I always set small goals, so I will feel success all the time, which may make me become autophilia and without ambitions. Therefore, I think if I can be better than yesterday or last time, then I am successful.

MY DEFINITION OF SUCCESS
The definition of success varies from person to person, but it can be summed up with this: if you set a goal, and, through effort on your part, you accomplish what you set out to do, you are successful. One cannot determine success by how much money one has, nor by how many people one surrounds him/herself with, but by one???,??,,?s happiness with where they stand in life.
I am mainly interested in two types of goals: short term goals and long term goals. Short term goals are goals that can be achieved soon after setting them. Examples of short term goals include: painting a picture, going to the movies with your friends, or, if you think really short term, feeding the dog.
Examples of long term goals include: learning to speak a foreign language, retirement, and owning one???,??,,?s own business. Without goals, we have no base to plan our lives around, therefore leading to failure.
The only way to be successful at attaining your goal is to have a plan. The way I learned to plan is to set a goal and work backwards from that goal to figure out what it is going to take to reach that goal. Say, for instance, your goal is to build a house. Building a house costs a lot of money and chances are you don???,??,,?t have that kind of money in the bank, so you take out a construction loan. Next, you would decide on the floor plans you want built. Then you need to hire a construction upon hiring the construction company, you set up a general time line of the work. And voila! When the company is finished building, you have reached your goal.
One of my earliest long term goals was to gradu I am on the path to meet that goal. All that stands between me and my high school diploma are a few essays and a math course, with which I should be finished within a week. A high school diploma will get you further in life than a GED would, because getting a GED shows that you gave up on the reinforced learning methods of high school and took the easy way out. Soon, I can put ???,??“received my high school diploma???,??? on my list of successes.
A second long term goal of mine is to be able to provide for my fianc???(C) and any children we may have. I have a good start to reaching this goal because I joined the Arkansas Army National Guard, which will pay me to go to college, pay for my college, and I get paid $2000 for every person I convince to join the Guard through GRAP (Guard Recruiting Assistant Program). Another step I have taken to reach this goal is to work with my dad, the owner of TCB Construction, on learning how to measure, write estimates for, and inspect roofing jobs. This will help me get the money I need to buy a house and provide for my family. By providing for my household, I would consider myself a great success as a spouse.
To further my career at TCB, I plan to go to college and get a degree in business management. With this degree and the hands on experience I have gained over the years by working with TCB during the summer, I will be able to manage the flow of money, the employees, and the other major aspects of running a company in the best interest of the business. By making sure the company is successful, I will have been successful in my career. And if at any time I decide to leave the company, I would have a job history that would get me a decent job elsewhere. Sometimes being successful calls for having a contingency plan. If you start out with a plan, and plan for the possibility of hiccups in those plans, you are a lot more likely to succeed than someone who has no plan.
Recently, I have taken an apprenticeship with TCB Construction. The job title that best illustrates what I am doing would be ???,??“sales representative.???,??? I go out with a salesman and learn how to measure the roof, bid and sell the job to the customer using both words, and competitive pricing.
