1. The most common use of the past continuous tense is to talk about something that was happening around a particular time in the past.过去进行时态最常用的情况就是谈论过去某个特定时间正在发生的某事。
o What were you doing at 8 o’clock last night? I was watching television.
I started watching television before 8 o’clock and I continued watching it after 8 o’clock.我在8点前开始看电视，并且我一直看到8点后。
o In 1994 he was working in a small town in Poland.
o At 6 o’clock on Saturday morning we were travelling to the airport.
2. We often use the past continuous and the past simple tense together. When this happens, the past continuous describes a longer, ‘background’ action or situation and the past simple describes the action or events.过去进行时态和一般过去时态一般是一起使用的。当两者同时出现的时候，过去进行时描述的是一个更长的、背景动作和背景情况，而一般过去时则描述活动或者事件。
o When I woke up this morning it was raining and my father was singing in the kitchen.
o I was walking home, whistling happily, when I saw two masked men run out of the bank.
Often, the ‘action’ described by the past simple tense interrupts the ‘situation’ described by the past continuous tense.一般来讲，由一般过去时态来描述的“动作”会打断由过去进行时态描述的“情况”。
o I broke my leg when I was skiing.
o I was playing a computer game when the doorbell rang.
Notice that the past continuous describes ‘situations’ that go on for some time – ‘skiing’ and ‘playing’ but the past simple describes ‘actions’ that happen quickly – ‘broke’ and ‘rang’.请注意，过去进行时态描述的是能持续进行一段时间的“情况”，这里的skiing和playing是一般过去时描述的很快发生的“动作”。Notice too the important difference between these two sentences.还请注意一下两个句子的重要区别。
o When they arrived, Jeff was cooking dinner. Jeff started cooking before they arrived.
o When they arrived, Jeff cooked dinner. Jeff started cooking dinner after they arrived.

1．过去进行时往往表示动作的未完成性,而一般过去时往往表示动作已完成.试比较：David wrote a letter to his father last night． 大卫昨晚给他父亲写了一封信.(信写完了.) David was writing a letter to his father last night． 大卫昨晚正在给他父亲写信.(指信在写的过程中,不一定写完.) 2．过去进行时和always连用,表示赞扬、感叹、厌恶等感情色彩；而一般过去时和always连用,表示经常或反复发生的动作.试比较：He was always changing his mind． 他总是三心二意.(表示厌恶) He always went to work by bus last year． 去年他总是乘坐公共汽车上班.(表示经常性动作) 3．一般说来,过去进行时侧重动作持续时间的长度；而一般过去时只说明过去某时发生某事,侧重说明事实.试比较：It was raining heavily last night． 昨晚下着大雨.(侧重说明下雨持续的时间长.) It rained heavily last night． 昨天下了大雨.(侧重说明下雨这一事实.) 4．在带有all night,the whole morning等强调时间长度的状语时,句中谓语动词用过去进行时更好些.如：He was working all night last Monday． 上周一他整整工作了一个晚上.5．在when引导的时间状语从句中,当when相当于while时,用一般过去时与过去进行时差异不大.如：I saw John when I walked／was walking to the station． 我步行去火车站时看见了约翰.但当when分句中的谓语动词为一般过去,其主句用一般过去时或过去进行时,有时会引起时间关系的变化.试比较：When we arrived,she was making some fresh coffee． 我们到达时,她在调制咖啡.(分句动作发生时,主句动作已在发生．) When we arrived,she made some fresh coffee． 我们到达时,她调制了咖啡.(分句动作发生在主句动作之前.) 6．有些表示状态、感觉、心理或情感的动词,如:be,have(有),see,hear,know,think,believe,understand等,一般不用过去进行时,而用一般过去时.如：I had a lot of work to do yesterday．昨天我有许多工作要做.

　　区别一：过去进行时强调动作在过去某时刻正在进行或持续，而一般过去时表示动作的完成。如：
　　He was writing his composition last night. 他昨晚在写作文。(不一定写完)
　　He wrote his composition last night. 他昨晚写了一篇作文。(已经写完)
　　区别二：表示过去的状态、感觉及心理活动的静态动词(如be, like, love, hate, fear, own, hear, see, know, want, notice)可用于一般过去时，但通常不用于进行时。如：
　　I hated it when a man spoke with his mouth full of food. 我讨厌人们说话时口里含着食物。
　　区别三：一般过去时与 always, constantly, forever, continually 等连用，表示&过去经常性、习惯性的动作&;而过去进行时与 always, constantly, forever, continually 等连用，表示动作的重复，常带有感情 色彩。如(www.yygrammar.com)：
　　He always got up at six. 他过去总是六点起床。
　　He was always thinking of his work. 他总是一心想到工作。
　　区别四：有时过去进行时可以用来替换一般过去时，但一般过去时表示主语的行为是经过认真考虑的;而过去进行时表示一种较随便或没有进行仔细考虑的行为。如：
　　I thought that he would agree with us. 我原以为它会同意我们的。
　　I was thinking of persuading him to follow my advice. 我想到了要说服他接受我们的建议。
