&1 Introduction
1.1 Research Background
The concept of “Discourse Marker” was put forward by Schiffrin,whose book Discourse Markers has been regarded as a pioneering work in this area.In linguistics, a discourse marker is a word or phrase that is relativelysyntax-independent and does not change the meaning of the sentence, and has asomewhat empty meaning. Examples of discourse markers include the particles "oh", "well", "now", "then", "youknow", and "I mean", and the connectives "so", "because", "and", "but", and "or"(Schiffrin, Deborah 1986) as well as Chinese phrases such as “你知道”, “大家知道”,“我的意思是” and “也就是说”. (冉永平，2003)Discourse markers tend to occur most prevalently in impromptu oral speech(Ostman 1982). For example:(1)Then there’s nothing to be afraid of.(2)Think about it, first they took away our wok and bowls, and then therice, oil, soy, and vinegar.The word "then" in the first&& &&& sentence and the phrase "think about it" in thesecond sentence are both discourse markers.Using discourse markers is a very common phenomenon in oral language.Because of different research perspectives, there has not yet a uniform definition or afixed term for discourse markers. They are called “discourse markers”, “PragmaticMarkers”, “Discourse Particles”, “Connectives”, and so on. Currently there is nounified idea about what a discourse marker is and what words it refers to, but in inrecent years, more and more scholars tend to think that they are a very commonphenomenon in spoken language and play an important pragmatic role in discourse.Ran Yongping (冉永平，1999) thinks that in verbal communication, discourse markersmake the speakers interactive and control the communication in many ways althoughthey do not directly constitute the content of the conversation, and they are notconstrained by syntactic structures.In 1970s, discourse markers received widespread attention from scholars, andthe research about discourse markers became more and more popular. The late 1980swas the golden period of rapid development in discourse marker research. During thattime the research teams, research findings as well as their influence in the linguisticcircle are far better and profound than before. A lot of researches have been done intodiscourse markers from many perspectives and in various fields in the past fourdecades. Discourse markers (DMs) have become an important research topic in recentyears. Researchers and scholars at home and abroad on discourse markers can beroughly divided into two schools (黄大网，2001): (1) the "coherence-based " school(represented by Schiffrin, Redeker, Fraser and others); and (2) the "relevance-basedschool"(represented by Blackmore and Jucker). Their understanding and views ofdiscourse markers are quite different.
1.2 Perspective of the Study

青岛市旅游标识英文译法规范
本译法规定了青岛市旅游单位双语标识英文译法的原则。适用于旅游景区景点、旅游饭店、高尔夫、游艇俱乐部等旅游单位的双语标识英文翻译。1.术语和定义下列术语和定义适用于本译法。
1.1　范围说明
&旅游景区景点是指具有参观游览、休闲度假、康乐健身等功能,&具备相应旅游服务设施并提供相应旅游服务的独立管理区。该管理区应有统一的经营管理机构和明确的地域范围。包括风景区、文博院馆、寺庙观堂、旅游度假区、自然保护区、主题公园、森林公园、地质公园、游乐园、动物园、植物园及工业、农业、经贸、科教、军事、体育、文化艺术等各类旅游景区景点。
&旅游饭店主要是指具备住宿、餐饮、娱乐等旅游服务设施，提供相应服务并获得国家星级等级资格的饭店、宾馆等单位。
2　具体要求
2.1　旅游景点通名
&地名通名通常采用英文直接翻译，英文单词首字母大写，其余小写。
2.1.1　植物园译为&Botanical&Garden，如青岛植物园Qingdao&Botanical&Garden。
2.1.2　博物馆2.1.2.1　一般名称译为xxxx&Museum,&Museum放在最后，如历史博物馆&History&Museum。2.1.2.2　某机构的博物馆译为xxxx&Museum&of&xxxx(机构名).
2.1.3　纪念馆2.1.3.1　历史名人的纪念馆译为Memorial，人名不加’s，如高凤翰纪念馆Gao&Fenghan&Memorial2.1.3.2　历史事件或事迹的纪念馆译为Memorial&Museum，
&如新文化运动纪念馆&New&Culture&Movement&Memorial&Museum。
2.1.4　故居译为Former&Residence，如康有为故居&Former&Residence&of&Kang&Youwei。
2.1.5　展览馆、陈列馆译为Exhibition&Hall/Exhibition&Center，
&会展中心译为Convention&&&Exhibition&Center。
2.1.6　陈列室译为&Exhibition&Room/Display&Room。
2.1.7　宫、院译为Palace，&如颐和园&Summer&Palace。&有些宫译为&Hall，
&如乾清宫&Hall&of&Heavenly&Purity。
2.1.8　殿、堂译为&Hall，&如太和殿&Hall&of&Supreme&Harmony、
&乐寿堂&Hall&of&Longevity&in&Happiness。
2.1.9　寺译为Temple，&如湛山寺&Zhanshan&T&太清宫Taiqing&Temple.
2.1.10　亭、阁译为Pavilion，&如回澜阁Huilan&Pavilion。
2.1.11　一般的塔译为Pagoda，如五塔寺&Five-Pagoda&Temple；藏式塔译为Dagoba,
&如白塔寺的白塔&White&Dagoba。
2.1.12　牌楼译为Memorial&Archway。
2.1.13　高山译为&Mountain，&如崂山&Laoshan&Mountain或Mt.&Laoshan。
&比较小的山、山丘等译为&Hill,&如小鱼山&Xiaoyu&Hill。
2.1.14　岛译为&Island，&如大公岛&Dagong&Island。
2.1.15　湖译为&Lake,&如小西湖&Xiaoxihu&Lake。
2.1.16　桥译为&Bridge,&如玉带桥&Jade&Belt&Bridge。
2.1.17　器皿译为～ware，如青铜器Bronzeware、玉器Jadeware。
2.1.18　朝代名译为拼音，如汉朝Han&Dynasty，但朝代名中包含的方位词应译成英文，
&如西周Western&Zhou&Dynasty、西汉Western&Han&Dynasty。
2.2.1　专用名词作为旅游区标志，指向内容为特定场所时则采用英文，如天坛Temple&of&Heaven。2.2.2　采用被社会普遍接受的名称。如颐和园&Summer&Palace。
2.3　经营类信息
&通常采用英文直接翻译，应符合国际通用惯例。如旅游纪念品商店Souvenir&Shop，礼品店&Gift&Shop。
2.3.1　酒家、酒楼、酒店
&酒家、酒楼、酒店等提供餐饮服务，性质就是饭店、餐馆的地方，全部翻译为Restaurant；而专门供人喝酒、小憩的“酒馆、酒店”则译为Wineshop。
2.3.2　体育场的英文译法为Stadium,如工人体育场&Workers’&Stadium。
2.3.3　体育馆的英文译法为Gymnasium或Indoor&Stadium，如海淀体育馆Haidian&Gymnasium、国家体育馆&National&Indoor&Stadium。
2.3.4　游泳馆的英文译法为Natatorium或Swimming&Pool，如二十一世纪游泳馆21st&Century&Natatorium、陶然亭游泳场&Taoranting&Swimming&Pool。&在奥运场馆中，主体育场译为Main&Stadium、主新闻中心译为Main&Press&Center、运营区/场馆工作区译为BOH（Back&of&House）、通行区/场馆公众区译为FOH&(Front&of&House)。
