Scientific discoveries have changed man’s life a great deal during the past century. First of all, they have greatly improved material well-being in several areas of life. In the field of medicine, cures for life threatening diseases have enabled people to live longer. In communication, the telephone and e-mail have made it possible for us to communicate with anyone in the world without leaving our homes or offices. Advances in transportation allow businessmen to fly across the ocean in the morning and return home the same evening. Space technology has put men on the moon. More efficient ways of using available resources, such as coal and solar power, have been explored. Scientific discoveries have also changed man’s moral atmosphere. Ethical (伦理的) issues are raised by these discoveries. Should we keep a terminally ill person alive through drugs and machines or should we allow him to die in dignity? With advances in transportation had come the problem of pollution for nearly every major city in the world. If cities become uninhabitable, then such technical advances may come with too great a price to pay. Many people also question the wisdom of sending men to the moon when there are urgent problems that have not been solved on earth. During future years, increasing attention must be given to the moral as well as the practical applications of science.小题1:Scientific discoveries have improved man’s life in several fields. An idea that started in Seattle's public library has spread throughout America and beyond. The concept is simple: help to build a sense of community in a city by getting everyone to read the same book at the same tome.In addition to encouraging reading as a pursuit (追求) to be enjoyed by all, the program allows strangers to communicate by discussing the book on the bus, as well as promoting reading as an experience to be shared in families and schools. The idea came from Seattle librarian Nancy Pearl who launched (发起)the "If All of Seattle Read the Same Book " project in 1998. Her original program used author visits, study guides and book discussion groups to bring people together with a book, but the idea has since expanded to many other American cities, and even to Hong kong.In Chicago, the mayor(市长)appeared on television to announce the choice of To Kill a Mockingbird as the first book in the "One Book, One Chicago" program. As a result, reading clubs and neighbourhood groups sprang up around the city. Across the US, stories emerged of parents and children reading to each other at night and strangers chatting away on the bus about plot and character. The only problem arose in New York ,where local readers could not decide on one book to represent the huge and diverse population. This may show that the idea works best in medium-sized cities or large towns, where a greater sense of unity(一致)can be achieved .Or it may show that New Yorkers rather missed the point ,putting all their energy And passion into the choice of the book rather than discussion about a book itself.Ultinatel was Nancy points out,the level of sucicess is not meastured by how many people read a book, but by how many people are enriched by the process.or have enjoyed speaking to someone with whom they would not otherwise have shared a word.小题1:What is the purpose of the project launched by Nancy?A.To invite authors to guide readers.B.To encourage people to read and share.C.To involve people in communnity service.D.To promote the friendship between cities.小题2:Why was it difficult for New Yorkers to carry out the projict?A.They had little interest in reading.B.They were too busy to read a book.C.They came from many different backgroundsD.They lacked support from the locat government小题3:According to the passage, where would the project be more easily carried out?A.In large communities with little sense of unityB.In large cities where libraries are far from homeC.In medium-sized cities with a diverse populationD.In large towns where agreement can be quickly reached小题4:The underlined words“shared a word”in Paragraph 5 probably mean&&&&&A.exchanged ideas with each otherB.discussed the meaning of a wordC.gamed life experience D.used the same language小题5:According to Nacy, the degree of students of the project is judged by&&&&&&&&&&the careful selection of a proper bookthe growing popularity of the writersC.the number of people who benefit from reading.D.the number of books that each person reads.

Surveys of American teenagers find that about half of them do not get enough sleep on school nights. They get an average of 60 to 90 minutes less than experts say they need.Experts say teens are biologically programmed to go to sleep later and wake up later than other age groups. Yet many schools start classes as early as seven in the morning. As a result, many students go to class feeling like Danny,16 years old. He plays two sports, lacrosse and football. He is an active teen—except in the morning. DANNY:“Getting up in the morning is pretty terrible. I’m just very out of it and tired. And through first and second period I can hardly stay awake.”Michael Breus,a clinical psychologist with a specialty in sleep disorders says:“These aren’t a bunch of lazy kids—although, you know, teenagers can of course be lazy. These are children whose biological rhythms, more times than not,are off.”Teens,he says, need to sleep eight to nine hours or even nine to ten hours a night. He says sleepy teens can experience a form of depression that could have big effects on their general well-being. It can affect not just their ability in the classroom but also on the sports field and on the road because any tired driver is dangerous, especially a teenager with a lack of experience. So what can schools do about sleepy students? The psychologist says one thing they can do is start classes later in the morning.Eric Peterson, head of St.George’s School in the northeastern state of Rhode Island, says,“In the end, schools ought to do what’s the right thing for their students, first and foremost.”And he wanted to see if a 30-minute delay would make a difference. It did.小题1:According to the passage, which of the following is the chief cause of sleepy teenagers?A.Persona haibits.B.Early school hours.C.Sports activities.D.Too much home work.小题2:According to Michael Breus,&&&&&&&&&.A.Teenagers are too lazy to get up early for school.B.Teenagers should change their biological rhythms.C.Lacking sleep can cause serious problems.D.Sleepy teenagers shouldn’t drive to school.小题3:What is Eric Peterson’s opinion on the issue?A.Schools should try their best to help students.B.Students should adjust to their school’s schedule.C.Changing school schedule is their last choice.D.Something has to change at the end of a school day.小题4:What does the underlined word“It”in the last sentence might refer to?A.St.George School.B.Rhode Island State.C.Students in St.George School.D.30-minute delay of school day.小题5:What can you infer might follow the passage immediately?A.Some positive changes in St.George’s school.B.Some complaints from teachers and parents.C.Some tips on how to help students foremost.D.Some unexpected outcome of the delay.

It is commonly believed among many Chinese that Westerners who take “Yes’,and “No” by their facial expressions are more straightforward than Chinese. Normally Westerners don * t have to adopt Chinese ways like sweeping the floor or constantly checking the clock to indicate to a guest that it’ s time to leave. They don’ t have to hesitate in saying “No” when they are not able to, or don’ t want to, offer help to a friend in need. There is no embarrassment attached to this behavior. But it is too simple to conclude that Westerners are more direct speakers than the Chinese. There are many occasions when the way Westerners express themselves makes Chinese look more straightforward and honest. When I was a fresh international student, the director of our program once asked students in an e-mail what we thought about a young professor. I simply said ’ “She seems to know a lot but doesn* t know how to teach. ” And the director replied with “Thank you for being honest. ”Only years later when I better understood the new culture,I realized why I had gone too far. If that question were asked now,the reply would have three paragraphs devoted to the qualities of the professor before the last line came out — ” There are some gaps in her teaching method. ” Still tough, but at least it wouldn't be considered rude.Indeed, the reserved social norms and the deeply - rooted “face issue" make honest speaking risky in China ; Americans have their own ways of being polite. This results partly from political correctness. It also results from several generations of people who have been told they have done well even when they have failed. It may not be unfair to suggest that many Americans are oversensitive and obsessed with a perfect self image. So,the next time you hear about indirect Chinese,it would be worth challenging the source and pointing out that the cultural comparisons are much more complex. But maybe you should do it in a roundabout way,to be polite.小题1:The passage mainly aims to ?A. tell us something about culture distinctionsB. remind us of the conflicts between culturesC. ask us to take positive attitudes to Chinese culturesD. keep us informed of the various communications小题2:According to the passage, the young professor lacked&& .A. confidence in her jobB. teaching experienceC. interaction with her studentsmD.responsibility for her students小题3:&& The underlined words “obsessed with" (para.4) probably means&& .A.satisfied withB.proud ofC.addicted toD.stuck in小题4:&& It can be inferred from the passage that&&& .A. the writer has a good knowledge of American cultureB. Americans are much more straightforward than ChineseC. the new professor was very angry with the writer' s commentsD. different culture backgrounds make cultures comparison complicated

Most Americans enjoy moving from one place to another. They are always in constant motion. For example, they often drive their cars 120 to 160 kilometres away just to have dinner with a friend or even fly to Europe just for watching a football match. In some states only one house in five has people living in it for more than five years. One may be born in one city, and go to school in another. He may finish his middle school education in two or three cities, and then attend a college far across the country. When he has entered business, he may possibly move from job to job. Moving from job to job, which is called “job-hopping”,is a very common practice in the United States.Job-hopping does good to workers, because every chance to change a job gives them a chance to move up to a higher position and to get better pay. And job-hopping also gives employers, bosses, managers the chance to benefit from the new ideas and skills that different people bring to their factories.小题1:The meaning of the underlined words is close to “_____”.A.looking for jobs everywhereB.always feeling excited in movementC.enjoying themselves while movingD.keeping moving from place to place小题2:In some places in America,______ in one place for more than five years.A.most people stayB.about one fifth of the people liveC.the owner of one house staysD.the owners of five houses stay小题3:It seems that the writer thinks job-hopping________.A.is a practice worth tryingB.only does good to workersC.may cause troublesD.make many people lose their jobs

What makes Americans spend nearly half their food dollars on meals away from home? The answers lie in the way Americans live today. During the first few decades of the twentieth century, canned and other convenience foods freed the family cook from full-time duty at the kitchen range. Then, in the 1940s, work in the wartime defense plants took more women out of the home than ever before, setting the pattern of the working wife and mother. Today about half of the country’s married women are employed outside the home. But, unless family members pitch in with food preparation, women are not fully liberated from that housework. Instead, many have become, in a sense, prisoners of the completely cooked convenience meals. It’s easier to pick up a bucket of fried chicken on the way home from work or take the family out for pizzas or burgers than to start opening cans or heating up frozen dinners after a long , hard day. Also, the rising divorce rate means that there are more single working parents with children to feed. And many young adults and elderly people, as well as unmarried and divorced mature people, live alone rather than as part of a family unit and don’t want to bother cooking for one.Fast food is appealing because it is fast, it doesn’t require any dressing up, it offers a “fun” break in the daily outline, and the outlay of money seems small. It can be eaten in the car--- sometimes picked up at a drive-in window without even getting out---or on the run. Even if it is brought home to eat, there will never be any dirty dishes to wash because of the handy disposable (一次性的) wrappings. Children, especially, love fast food because it’s finger food, no struggling with knives and forks, no annoying instructions from adults about table manner.小题1:Americans enjoy fast food mainly because __________.A.it can be eaten in the carB.it is much more tasty than home-made foodC.one only uses his fingers while eating itD.it is time-saving and convenient小题2:It can be inferred that children __________.A.want to have more freedom at tableB.never wash dishes after each mealC.are good at using forks and knives while eatingD.take eating time as a fun break小题3: Many Americans are eating out and not cooking at home partially because __________.A.they want to make a change after eating the same food for years at homeB.the food made outside home tastes better than food cooked at homeC.many of them live alone and don’t like taking trouble to cookD.American women refuse to cook at home due to women’s liberation movement小题4:According to the text, a drive-in window is a __________.A.car window from which you can see the driverB.window in the restaurant from which you get your takeout in the carC.place where you check the mechanic condition of your carD.place where you return the used plates after eating

A “blogger” is a person who writes on an Internet computer Web site called a “blog”. The word “blog” is a short way of saying web log, or personal Web site. Anyone can start a blog, and they can write about anything they like. There are millions of blogs on the Internet today. They provide news, information and ideas to many people who read them. They contain links to other Web sites. And they provide a place for people to write their ideas and react to the ideas of others.A research company called Peruse has studied more than 3,000 Web logs. Americans have taken over from the Indians many things besides their continent! Where did corn, potatoes, tomatoes, chocolate and maple sugar come from? The Indians. Who invented moccasins, snowshoes and hammocks? The Indians!A list of the tools, plants, materials and designs we owe to the Indians would include hundreds of items. But there is something far more familiar, something that is always at hand. It is used daily by every American: a large vocabulary of Indian words.Potato, tomato, chocolate, moccasin and hammock came into English from Indian languages. So did cocoa, tobacco, maize (an Indian word for corn) and succotash. Some words have changed on the way. Potato, for example, comes from a word that sounds like “batata”. Cocoa began as “cacahuatl”. Some meanings have also changed. The long Indian word from which succotash comes means “something broken off in bits”. Indian women often varied their dishes by mixing bits of one food with another. White men who ate an Indian dish of mixed lima beans (青豆) and corn began using the Indian word to mean this particular mixture.Put on your moccasins and take a walk in the country. If it is a cold day and you wear a mackinaw, your jacket will be as Indian as your shoes. But mackinaw came from “michilimackinac”, the Indian name of a place where a fort (集市) served as a trading post. Bright-colored blankets or jackets bought at the post soon became known as “mackinaws”. Early white visitors to the continent found Indian words useful for the things new to them. But some Indian sounds, such as the “tl” at the end of many words, were hard to say. That is why “coyotl” became coyote and “tomatle” became tomato. Some words simply seemed too long. So, “musickwautash” became succotash and “rockahominy” became hominy.小题1:The first two paragraphs may serve as a(n) &&&&.A.explanationB.introductionC.commentD.background小题2: Which of the following has been changed for easier pronunciation?A.BatataB.ChocolateC.TomatleD.Rockahominy小题3: Some words have changed because &&&&&&.A.they are too longB.nobody can use themC.the things they refer to have disappearedD.they are too difficult for people to write小题4: What is the passage mainly about?A.How Indian traditions affect us.B.Why Indian words were changed.C.Things we owe to the Indians.D.Indian words all around us.
