&Jo:& Hello and welcome to Ask About Britain, the programme where we answer your questions about how British people live their lives. I&m Jo, and with me today is Jean.&

Jo:& She asked us a question about Scottish culture.

Alice: I want to ask why Scottish male want to wear skirts?

Jean:& 原来Alice 想要知道的是，为什么苏格兰的男性都喜欢穿裙子呢。有这么回事吗 Jo?
Jo:&&& Well kind of. They wear something called kilts & which is like a&
&& skirt and it will have a tartan pattern on it.
Jean:& Ah 原来她说的是苏格兰男性穿的传统服装，就是苏格兰短裙，英语就是kilts K.I.L.T.S. 是用苏格兰格子花呢作的，确实很像是个裙子的款式。苏格兰的这种格子花呢就叫tartan。
Jo:&&& Yes a kilt is known as the national dress of Scotland.
Jean:& 是的，他确实是苏格兰的民族服装。而且越是像婚礼毕业典礼这样的正式场合 ，苏格兰人才越要穿它。
Jo:&&& So back to our question though & why do Scottish men wear&&&& skirts? Well, we spoke to Casia Zajac, who is the Director of the&&& London office of Visit Scotland.
Jean:& Visit Scotland 是面向英国宣传苏格兰文化的一家公司。So Casia, any ideas why Scottish men want to wear skirts?
Well that&s a really good question and I don&t know why they want to wear them but if we look back at the origin of the kilt, we can see that it was originally a very long piece of woollen material that was worn as a blanket to keep warm in the evening and during the day it was worn as a kind of dress. Now that was quite a few hundred years ago, and the skirt-like garment that we see today actually has evolved from that.

Jo:&&& So Casia doesn&t know why men want to wear kilts but she says
&& we should look at the origin of the kilt
Jean:& The origin 发源起源。我们了解到，在好几百年前，最早的苏格兰短裙是一大块羊毛织料围成的。
Jo:&&& Wool. Woollen material and it was worn as a blanket to keep&
&& warm& in the evening. A blanket.
Jean:& 当时是大家披着取暖当毯子似的一块羊绒呢，白天就把它穿成一条裙子的样式。
Jo:&&& And Casia says the skirt-like garment we see Scottish men&
&& wearing today
Jean:& Skirt-like就是像裙子一样的。Garment 衣服。我们现在看到的像裙子一样的苏格兰短裙是从当时整条长毯子的原型进化而来的。
Jo:&&& The kilt has evolved from the long piece of material worn many&&&& years ago.

Jo:&&& Heritage. It also makes you feel very Scottish.
Jean:& Ah 原来苏格兰人穿苏格兰短裙和他们的民族自豪感也有很大的关系。苏格兰人对苏格兰短裙是非常有感情的。
Jo:&&& Kilts are close to a Scottish person&s heart&

But Jo, I am still a little confused. I mean isn&t it a little strange for a man to wear a skirt?
Jo:&&& Well Jean let&s ask the Scottish again shall we - there is&&& one very easy answer.

-& it&s not a skirt, that&s the thing & it&s Scottish national dress
-& it&s not a skirt
-& a skirt is obviously a different thing&

Jo:&&& Ah so it&s pretty easy really & it&s NOT a skirt & it&s national dress
Jean:& 而且苏格兰人都认为苏格兰短裙和一般女性穿的裙子区别是非常大的。他们也管苏格兰短裙叫做national dress & 民族服装。
Jo:&&& So definitely not a skirt Jean&
Jean:& 严格来讲绝对不是裙子 &.but it looks like a skirt & 不过绝对不是裙子！
Jo:&&& That&s right Jean & not a skirt & a kilt.
