湖南省衡阳市第八中学学年高一下学期第一次月考考试试卷 试题及答案解析word版.doc
There are two types of people in the world. Although they have equal
degree of health and wealth and other comforts of life, one becomes happy and
the other becomes unhappy. This arises from the different ways in which they
consider things, persons, events and the resulting effects upon their minds.
People who are to be happy fix their
attention on the convenience of things: the pleasant parts of conversation, the
well prepared dishes, the goodness of the wine and the fine weather. They enjoy
all the cheerful things. Those who are to be unhappy think and speak only of
the opposite things. Therefore, they are continually dissatisfied. By
their remarks, they sour the pleasure of society, hurt many
people, and make themselves disagreeable everywhere. If this turn of mind was
founded in nature, such unhappy persons would be the more to be pitied. The
intention of criticizing and being disliked is perhaps taken up by imitation.
It grows into a habit, unknown to its possessors. The habit may be strong, but
it may be cured when those who have it realize its bad effects on their interests
and tastes. I hope this little warning may be of service to them, and help them
change this habit.
&&& Although in fact it is chiefly an act of the
imagination, it has serious results in life since it brings on deep sorrow and
bad luck. Those peo nobody loves them, and no one treats
them with more than the most common politeness and respect. This frequently
puts them in bad temper and draws them into arguments. If they aim at getting
some advantages in social position or fortune, nobody wishes them success. Nor
will anyone start a step or speak a word to favor their hopes. If they bring on
themselves public objections, no one will defend or excuse them, and many will
join to criticize their wrongdoings. These should change this bad habit and be
pleased with what is pleasing, without worrying needlessly about themselves and
others. If they do not, it will be good for others to avoid any contact with
them. Otherwise, it can be disagreeable and sometimes very inconvenient,
especially when one becomes mixed up in their quarrels.
32. People who are unhappy _______.
A. always consider things differently from others
B. always discover the unpleasant side of certain things
C. usually misunderstand what others think or say
D. usually are affected by the results of certain things
33.& The phrase “sour the pleasure of society” most nearly
means “_______”.
A. makes others
unhappy&&&&&&&&&&&&
B. has a good taste with social life
C. tend to scold others
openly&&&&&&&&& D. enjoy the
pleasure of life
34. We can conclude from the passage that _______.
A. we should pity all such unhappy people
B. such unhappy people are dangerous to social life
C. people can get rid of the habit of unhappiness
D. unhappy people can not understand happy persons
35.& If such unhappy persons insist on keeping the habit, the
author suggests that people should _______.
A. show no respect and politeness to them
B. prevent any communication with them
C. persuade them to recognize the bad effects
D. quarrel with them until they realize the mistakes

If drinking coffee or tea has become part of your daily routine, you
might wonder what it's doing to your long-term heart health. New research from
Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology, a journal (期刊)of the American Heart
Association, found that high tea consumption and proper coffee consumption may
be associated with decreased rates of death from coronary heart disease ( CHD)(冠心病).
&&& The study followed more than 37,000 tea and
coffee drinkers over 13 years. Participants completed food recalls to document
their typical intake of tea and coffee, and were divided into groups that
ranged from light to heavy consumption. Researchers accounted for variables(变量)such as health histories,
height, weight, and waist circumference (腰围)and recorded the number of deaths from cardiovascular (心血管的)disease and stroke during
the study period.
&&& Overall results showed that consuming more than
six cups of tea per day was associated with a 36% lower risk of death from
heart disease compared to consuming less than one cup of tea per day. There
appeared to be no such protective effect of tea-drinking at any amount for risk
of death from stroke. Among coffee drinkers, more proper consumption levels
(2-3 cups per day) were associated with the greatest risk reduction for death
from heart disease (21% ) compared to drinking less than one cup of coffee per
&&& Researchers acknowledged certain inconclusive
variables within their findings. For example, the difference between
decaffeinated(去咖啡因的)and regular coffee could not be accurately accounted for, nor could
specific recommendations be made for type of tea, though due to its popularity
in the Netherlands where the study took place, researchers assumed most tea
consumption to be black tea.
&&& Furthermore, researchers found that tea and
coffee drinkers had opposite lifestyles, with tea drinkers tending to engage in
healthy lifestyle habits and coffee drinkers being more likely to eat less
healthy and smoke. It was difficult to say with certainty what impact these
other lifestyle variables may have contributed to the overall results.
25.& What's the conclusion of the study?
A. People should drink tea and coffee as much as possible.
B. Drinking more tea may benefit people with CHD.
C. High tea consumption may reduce the rate of stroke.
D. Coffee consumption has nothing to do with heart disease.
26.& Which of the following variables haven’t been considered?
A. Health histories.&&&&& B. Height and
C. Waist circumference.&& D. The type of tea and coffee.
27.& What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. All people in the Netherlands like black tea.
B. Tea and coffee drinkers had a similar life style,
C. Other variables have no effect on the results.
D. There are still something uncertain about the study.
28. Which of the following might be the best title?
A. Why our heart loves coffee and tea,&& B. Drink more tea
and coffee.
C. Heart disease will be
reduced.&&&&&&& D. An amazing findings about
heart diseases.

& Each year millions of babies are born too soon and
too small. Premature or preterm births mean births at less than thirty-seven
& Prematurity is the leading cause of death in
newborn babies. More than one-fourth of the four million newborns who die each
year around the world were born too early.
& Preterm babies that survive can suffer a lifetime
of serious health conditions. The examples include cerebral palsy, blindness,
hearing problems and learning disabilities. Families and communities face
emotional, physical and financial costs.
& Christopher Howson is the vice president for global
programs at the March of Dimes. His group and the World Health Organization
recently published a report called “The Global and Regional Toll
of Preterm Birth.”
& Christopher Howson: “Frankly the problem
of preterm birth is under-recognized and undervalued. People fail to recognize
how serious the problem is. I mean, this report shows that thirteen million
babies are born every year preterm, and that over a million of those babies die
as a result of being born too early.”
& And thes the true numbers
could be even higher. More than eighty-five percent of preterm births happen in
Africa and Asia. Africa has the highest rate, with about four million cases
each year.
& Christopher Howson says many of the causes of
preterm births are related to poverty and weak health-care systems.
& Christopher Howson: “For example, the poor
overall health and nutritional status of women. A high burden of infectious
diseases. A lack of family planning – allowing a woman to decide when to start
and end having children. And also the lack of good prenatal(产前) care programs that might identify problems early on in pregnancy.”
& Preterm births are a problem not just in the
developing world. The combined rate in the United States and Canada is the second highest in the world. Preterm birth rates in the United States have increased thirty-six percent in the last twenty-five years.
& This has been largely the result of two reasons.
One is an increase in pregnancies among women over age thirty-five. The other
is an increase in the use of reproductive therapies(生殖治疗).
32. This passage is mainly about ______.
A. the causes of people’s bad health throughout the

dropping and they are increasing in some developed countries like the US and Canada.
B. The increase in pregnancies among women over age
thirty-five and the increase in the use of reproductive therapies result in the
increase of preterm birth rates.
C. Fortunately, many people have already realized the
seriousness of the problem of preterm births.

Cell phones:Is there a cancer
Could your cell phone give
you cancer? Whether it could or not, some people are worrying about the
possibility that phones, power lines and Wi-Fi could be responsible for a range
of illnesses, from rashes to brain tumors.
Some say there is evidence
to support the growing anxieties. David Carpenter, a professor of environmental
health sciences at the university at Albany, in New York, thinks there’s a
greater than 95 percent chance that power lines can cause childhood leukemia (白血病). Also there’s a
greater than 90 percent chance that cell phones can cause brain tumors. “It’s
apparent now that there’s a real risk, ”said Carpenter.
But others believe these
concerns are not justified. Dr Martha Linet, head of radiation
epidemiology (流行病学) at the US National Cancer Institute, has looked at the same
research as Carpenter but has reached a different conclusion. “I don’t support
warning labels for cell phones, ”said Linet. “We don’t have the evidence that
there’s much danger.”
Studies so far suggest a
weak connection between EMFs (电磁场) and illness—so weak that it might not exist at all. A
multinational investigation of cell phones and brain cancer, in 13 countries
outside the US, has been underway for several years. It’s funded in part by the
European Union, in part by a cell phone industry group. The final report should
come out later this year, but data so far don’t suggest a strong link between
cell phone use and cancer risk.

phones can lead to cancer

&&& A study
into how lazy British people are has found more than half of adults are so lazy
that they’d use the lift rather than climb two flights of stairs.
over 2,000 people
were interviewed by independent researchers at Nuffield Health, Britain’s largest
health charity. The results were surprising.
one in six people surveyed said if their remote control was broken, they would
continue watching the same channel rather than get up.
than one third of those questioned said they would not run to catch a bus.
Worryingly, of the 654 respondents with children, 64% said they were often too
tired to play with them.
&& This led
the report to conclude that it’s no wonder that one in six children in the UK
are classified as obese(肥胖) before they
start school. Dr.Sarah Dauncey, medical director of Nuffield Health, said,
“People need to get fitter, not just for their own sake, but for the sake of
their families, friends and evidently their pets too. If we don’t start to take
control of this problem, a whole generation will become too unfit to perform
even the simple tasks.”
&& And Scotland’s largest city, Glasgow, was shamed as the most indolent city in the UK, with 75% surveyed admitting they do not get enough exercise, followed closely by Birmingham and Southampton, both with 67%.

Coke,diet Pepsi,diet pills,no&fat diet,vegetable diet....We
are surrounded by the word “diet” everywhere we look and listen. We have so
easily been attracted by the promise and potential of diet products that we
have stopped thinking about what diet products are doing to us. We are paying
for products that harm us psychologically and physically(身体上).
products significantly weaken us psychologically. On one level,we are not allowing our brains to admit that our weight problems
lie not in actually losing the weight, but in controlling
the consumption of fatty, high&calorie, unhealthy foods. Diet products allow us to jump over the thinking
stage and go straight for the scale (秤) instead. All we
have to do is to swallow or recognize the word “diet” in food labels.
another level,diet products have greater
psychological effects. Every time we have a zero&calorie drink,we are telling ourselves without our awareness that& we&
don't& have& to& work& to& get& results. Diet
products make people believe that gain comes without pain, and that life can be without resistance and struggle.
danger of diet products lies not only in the psychological(心理的) effects they have on us,but also in the
physical harm that they cause. Diet foods can indirectly harm our bodies
because consuming(消耗) them instead of healthy
foods means we are preventing our bodies from having basic nutrients (营养成分).Diet foods and diet pills
contain zero calorie only because the diet industry has created chemicals to
produce these wonder products.Diet products may not be nutritional, and the chemicals that go into diet products are potentially
dangerous. Now that we are aware of the effects that diet products have on us,it is time to seriously think about buying them.Losing weight lies
in the power of minds, not in the power of
chemicals. Once we realize this,we will be much
better able to resist diet products, and therefore
prevent the psychological and physical harm that comes from using them.

Healthy Habits, Healthy Body
Feel tired lately? Has a doctor said he can’t
find anything wrong with you? Perhaps he sent you to a hospital, but all the
advanced equipment there shows that there is nothing wrong with you.
Then, consider this: you might be in a state of
sub-health (亚健康).
Sub-health, also called the third state or gray
state, is explained as a borderline state between health and disease.
According to the investigation by the National
Health Organization, over 45 percent of sub-healthy people are middle-aged or
elderly. The percentage is even higher among people who
work in management positions as well as students around exam-week.
Symptoms(征兆) include a lack of
energy, depression(压抑), slow reactions, insomnia(失眠),
agitation, and poor memory.Other symptoms include shortness of breath,
sweating and aching in the waist and legs.
The key to preventing and recovering from sub-health,
according to some medical experts, is to form good living habits, alternate
work and rest, exercise regularly, and take part in open air activities.
As for meals, people are advised to eat less
salt and sugar. They should also eat more fresh vegetables,
fruits, fish because they are rich in nutritional elements—vitamins and trace
elements—that are important to the body.
Nutrition(营养) experts point out
that it is not good to eat too much at one meal because it may cause unhealthy
changes in the digestive tract(消化系统).They also say that a balanced diet is very
helpful in avoiding sub-health.
19.According
to this passage, which of the following is right?
A.When you are in a state of sub-health, you
should stay home and keep silent.
B.When you are in a state of sub-health, you
should go to see a doctor and buy some medicine.
C.When you are in a state of sub-health, you
should have yourself examined in foreign countries.
D.When you are in a state of sub-health, you
should find out the reasons and relax yourself.
20.Middle-aged
people may be easy to get sub-health because _______.
A.they have used up their energy

Because of all these, retirees are more likely to get depressed.&&&&&
Depression is very harmful. First, depression can make physical
health problems worse. Second, it takes a toll on relationships, because it can
make people angry. Third, it’s hard to get& much done when you’re
depressed.
What can we do to overcome (克服) the feelings of depression? First, do all the things that help
depression in general: drink enough water, exercise, talk to friends, have a
hobby, laugh, and spend time in nature. If you feel depressed more often than
not, it’s probably time to talk to a doctor about your feelings. Second, it’s
important to keep busy and get out of the house when you can. Make specific
plans with friends. Take a class Volunteer. Or just make sure you start each day
with some kind of goal. Third, try to focus on what you’ve gained by retiring.
Think about what you may have now that you wished you had before you were able
to retire. For example, days that are less stressful, a chance to rest and take
better care of your body, more time for your family and yourself. To write, to
start a hobby and to learn something new are all new possibilities. Finally,
tell your story. You’ve lived a long time and you become an oral historian each
time you talk with someone about your experiences. You can also write in a
journal or make a video recording of your memories. Telling your stories can
help you look back on your life and career with a sense of wholeness and

Have you ever wanted to be healthier? Get a pet! That is what the
experts are saying. There are many advantages to owning a pet, no matter whether
it is a cat, dog, or horse.
Some new parents are often give up their pets when they have a baby.
Yet, studies have shown that having a pet at home actually reduces a child’s likelihood
of getting certain kinds of diseases. In one study, a researcher studied 300
new-born babies and tested them again a year later. He found that if they had a
dog at home the children had up to 33% fewer allergies (过敏症). In addition, the children
had stronger immune systems (免疫系统) when compared to the babies of homes with no pets.
In another study, researchers tested nearly 4,500 people. They found
that cat owners who spent time stroking (抚摸) their cats suffered 40% fewer heart attacks than those who did not
own a cat. Some other studies also found that pet owners suffered less from
depression (沮丧)
than non-pet owners.
Horses have been used to treat disabled people for a long time, both
physically and mentally. Not only does the movement of the horse help people
with physical problems, but also the calming influence of the animals has a
positive influence on them, too. People found great changes in disabled people

For many years,
I strongly believed that my suffering was because of my size. I imagined that
when the weight disappeared, it would take old wounds, hurts and rejections
Many people with
weight problems also mistakenly believe that changing our bodies will fix everything.
Perhaps our mistake is believing that being thin equals being loved, being
special, and being cared for. We fantasize(幻想) about what it will be like when we reach the
long-awaited goal. We work very hard to realize this dream. Then, at last, we
find ourselves there.
But we often
gain back what we have lost. Even so, we continue to believe that next time it
will be different. Next time, we will keep it off. Next time, being thin will
finally bring us happiness, self-worth, and, of course, love.
It took me a
long time to realize that there was something more for me to learn about
beauty. Different cultures have different standards (标准) of beauty. In Samoa a woman is not considered attractive unless she weighs more than 200 pounds. More
importantly, if it’s happiness that we want, why not put our energy there
rather than on the size of our body? Why not look inside? Many of us struggle
hard to change our body, but in vain. We have to find a way to live comfortably

A warm drink of milk before bed has long been the best choice for
those wanting a good night’s sleep. But now a study has found it really does
help people nod off—if it is milked from a cow at night.
Researchers have
discovered that “night milk” contains more melatonin(褪黑激素), which has been proven to
help people feel sleepy and reduce anxiety.
The study, by
researchers from Seoul, South Korea, involved mice being fed with dried milk
powder made from cows milked both during the day and at night.
Those given night
milk, which contained 10 times the amount of melatonin, were less active and
less anxious than those fed with the milk collected during daytime, according
to the study published in The Journal of Medicinal Food.
milk quickened the start of sleep and caused the mice to sleep longer.
the effect of cows milk harvested at different time has not been tested on
humans up to now, taking melatonin drugs has been suggested to those who are
struggling to fall asleep at night.
Previous studies have also indicated that milk can be excellent for helping
sleep because of the calcium content, which helps people to relax.
also sugar-free and additive-free with nutritionists recommending skimmed milk
as the best choice before bed as it is the least fattening. The more fat you
take in before bedtime, the greater burden you will put on your body at night.

&&& Our risk of cancer rises as we age. So it
makes sense that the elderly should be routinely screened for new tumors(肿瘤)—or
doesn't it?
&&& While such careful tracking of cancer is
a good thing in general, researchers are increasingly questioning whether all
of this testing is necessary for the elderly. With the percentage of people
over age 65 expected to nearly double by 2050, it's important to consider the
health benefits of screening and the costs of routine testing.
&&& In many cases, screening can lead to
additional operations to remove cancer, which can cause side effects, while the
cancers themselves may be slow-growing and may not cause serious health
problems in patients' remaining years. But the message that everyone must
screen for cancer has become so ingrained that when health care experts
recommended that women under 50 and over 74 stop screening for breast cancer,
it caused a strong reaction among doctors, patients and advocacy(拥护)
&&& It's hard to uproot deeply held beliefs
about cancer screening with scientific data. Certainly, there are people over
age 75 who have had cancers detected by routine screening, and gained several
extra years of life because of treatment. And clearly, people over age 75 who
have other risk factors for cancer, such as a family history, should continue
to get screened regularly. But for the remainder, the risk of cancer, while
increased at the end of life, must be balanced with other factors like a
remaining life expectancy.
&&& A recent study suggests that doctors
start to make more right decisions about who will truly benefit from
screening—especially considering the explosion of the elderly.
&&& It's not an easy guess to make, but one
that makes sense for the whole patient. Dr. Otis Brawley said, &Many
doctors are ordering these tests purely to protect themselves against medical
disputes(纠纷). We need to think about the good use of
health care and stop talking about the rationing(定量配给制) of
health care.&
&&& That means making some difficult
decisions with elderly patients and going against the misguided belief that
when it comes to health care, more is always better.

&&&&&& Much time
and effort has been dedicated to researching the mental health benefits of
flexible work environments, but can the ability to leave work early to watch
your son’s soccer game, or arrive at the office a bit later in the morning in
order to see to some personal affairs, have broader physical health benefits
beyond making you feel a bit less exhausted?
&&&&&& According
to new research published in the Cochrane Library’s Cochrane database of
Systematic Reviews, &it seems so. In a review of 10 previous studies
examining the health implications of flexible work conditions for more than
16,000 people, researchers found that flexible work schedules --- when
employees can shift their starting times, for example --- were associated with
improvements in blood pressure, sleep and overall mental health. Specifically,
the review showed that more flexibility in work schedules was associated with
improvements in alertness, sleep quality, tiredness, heart rate and other
primary health outcomes, as well as benefits to secondary health outcomes, such
as sensed social support in the workplace and sense of community. And, perhaps
unsurprisingly, in all of the studies included in the review, researchers found
no evidence for negative effects of more flexible work schedules.
&&&&&& This primary
analysis was intended to shed light on the potential health benefits of
flexible work options, which are increasingly popular throughout Scandinavia,
and have recently gained some ground in the U.K. In the U.S., the phenomenon is a bit slower to catch on --- fewer than a third of U.S. employees have flexible work options, according to estimates from the AARP. Yet, the
economic recession(衰退) of recent
years may have contributed to growth in workplace flexibility --- as companies
unable to reward employees with bonuses or raises may turn to other forms of
compensation(补偿). Reuters
reported early last year.
&&&&& Previous research
too, of course, has indicated the benefits of flexible work environments toward
positive mental health outcomes. And while these latest findings are promising,
the researchers stress that more study is vital to understanding the subtle relationship
between flexible work and improved health outcomes. For example, employees who
are most frequently granted workplace leeway(时间等的充裕) are generally higher-ranking, and as such are
likely of higher socioeconomic status, which could impact their overall health
apart from work scheduling. To truly grasp the benefits of flexible working
conditions, the researchers say, additional study analyzing health outcomes
among a wider range of workers --- from high-ranking executives to hourly
employees --- is critical to gaining a deeper understanding of the issue, and
helping to shape future workplace policy.

work can greatly improve employees’ work efficiency.
52. According to what Reuters reported early

Children of America are getting fatter every
time. 13% of the children at the age of 6 to 11 are overweight.
When we look at the children's lives today in
the USA, we can see the root(origin)of the problem----sports and foods. Young
children like sports but they don't have enough around the start of high
school. That's especially true for girls. Meanwhile, to make matters worse,
schools are becoming much more interested in sports teams. So children are not
able to get enough exercise just when they need it the most. There is also the
food problem. Children get most of their calories at restaurants or parties or
somewhere else away from home. They often drink too many Cokes. Parents have a
lot of fears about telling a child he needs to lose weight-- they are afraid it
will push a child into an eating disorder. Some parents fear that pushing
children to lose weight means their children will think they're not good
enough, or not loved because of their weight.
Parents need to come to terms with the
fact that the family is very important to the children. The most useful program
for children is called &family weight control&. This is good news.

A Good Night's Steep
Sleep plays a vital role in good health and
well-being throughout your life. While you're sleeping, your brain is forming
new pathways to help you learn and remember information. Although we all know
the importance of getting a good night's sleep, not all of us know the best way
of getting it. A sleep expert,
Phil Atherton, gave some top tips for getting the most
out of the night, which will leave you ready for action in the morning.
According to Phil Atherton, not eating a
large meal before bedtime is important for getting a good night's sleep. The
time difference between eating and sleeping should be at least three hours. So
you'd better avoid eating any food three hours before bed, as it will
lower your blood sugar during sleep and
help minimize damage from too much sugar floating
It's also important to find ways to prepare
your body for sleep. You can follow a routine like trying not to expose
yourself to too much artificial light within 1 hour before bed, as your brain
uses light to help set internal &body clock&. Although it might seem
unnatural to schedule your sleep, the purpose is to send a signal to your body
and mind that it's time to sleep.
Another way to prepare your body for sleep is
to get into a relaxed state by taking a bath or listening to soft music. Both
of them will help to take the mind off the daytime pressures.
Having a suitable bed, especially a suitable
mattress (床垫), is
necessary for a good night's sleep. Sleep is a personalized activity, and we
all adopt different sleeping positions. Finding the mattress that suits you
will reduce back pains that can result from a poor sleeping position. The bed
should be four to six inches longer than its tallest user, allowing for space
to move around.
The recent research is pretty clear that a
good night's sleep in a major component of good health. Since the start of the
21st century, studies have linked a lack of sleep to many diseases, such as
diabetes and obesity. Taking action now will lead to long-term benefits for you
and those around you.

to tell us in the passage?
A. When to start a sound sleep. && B. Why to form a good

record your biological clock
