Android is the latest mobile OS to take the world by storm, but everyone doesn’t have access to the latest mobile devices.& Thankfully, there’s an easy way to run Android on your Windows, Mac, or Linux computer.& Google provides an Android emulator with their SDK, which is designed to let developers test their apps on Android before running them on handsets.& We can use this to test drive Android on our computer, here’s how to do it.
Getting Started
The Android Emulator requires Java to run, so if you don’t already have Java installed on your computer, download it from the link below and install as normal.
Note: When installing Java, make sure not to install any crapware it tries to sneak in like the worthless Yahoo toolbar.
Then, download the Android SDK from Google (link below), and make sure to select the correct version for your computer.& Once it’s downloaded, unzip the files as normal.
In Windows, run the SDK Setup.exe program to get started running Android on your PC.
The SDK will check Google’s servers for available packages.
If you see an SSL error message, click the Settings tab on the left in the SDK and AVD Manager window that opened in the background.& Here, uncheck the Force https box, click Ok, and then reopen the setup.
Now, the Package Installer will open.& You can choose what you want to install, and then click Install to begin installing the Android emulator on your computer.
By default, all of the SDK platforms, samples, and APIs will be selected for install.& This can take quite a while to download, as several versions of Android are currently available.& If you only want to play around with Android, choose the version you want.& You’ll want the SDK Platform Android your.version.& Then click the Reject bullet on all the other entries, and click Install.& We wanted to try out the latest Android 2.2 as well as the older 1.5, so we downloaded both of them.
Once you’ve started installing, you’ll see a window showing the download and installation progress.& This may take a few minutes, depending on your Internet speed.
You’ll have some little Androids in your taskbar, but unfortunately they don’t show the download progress.
Setup an Android Emulator
Once the download is completed, you can setup an emulator to test drive Android on your computer.& Select the Virtual Devices from the left menu, and then click the New button on the right.
Enter a name for your virtualized Android, and select the version of Android you want to use from the drop-down menu.& This will only show the version you installed previously, so you may only see one version listed depending on your selection.
Enter a size under the SD C this is a virtual SD card that’s actually an IMG file that Android will use to store your settings and files in.& Then, select a screen size from the skin options.& The default is a standard, Nexus One-type display, while the others are different sizes including even a BlackBerry-style device.
Click Create AVD when you’re finished.
The program may appear to freeze while it is creating the AVD, so just wait until you see the confirmation window.
You’re now ready to run Android on your PC!& Select your new virtual Android, and click Start on the right.
You can choose to scale the display if you’ve chosen a larger screen size than your monitor will fit, and then select Launch.
Android will now begin to load in your emulator.& Several command prompt windows may open, and then you’ll see the emulator itself.& Notice that the default, large screen size will display a keypad and virtual buttons on the right side of the emulated device.
Android may take several minutes to load, especially on your first run.& After a while, the boot screen will switch to an Android boot animation.
Finally, you’ll be presented with your new Android home screen!& Use your mouse as you would normally, though remember that you don’t need to double-click to open apps.
You can open pre-installed apps from the launcher menu, though unfortunately these emulator images do not include the Android Marketplace.
View your favorite websites in the browser, and they will render just as they would on an Android device.& Note that you can enter text using the on screen keyboard in the emulator, or with your standard keyboard.& Since this is an emulator, you may notice some lag in entering text.
You can also install Apps that are directly available online.
Default apps such as Email work great, and you can even see most of the device settings in Android.
Click and hold on the home screen to change the background or try out widgets.
You’ll even see the nifty Android Lock screen if you leave your virtual machine alone for a few minutes.& Just click the arrow and drag it to the other side of the screen to unlock.
You can always repeat the steps later to create a new Android virtual machine.& Here we’ve created an Android 1.5 virtual machine with the QVGA screen size.
We did experience a few crashes in our tests, and the emulator felt somewhat sluggish, but in all, it’s fun to try& out a new mobile OS without spending money on a new phone.
Launch Android Virtual Machines Later
Anytime you want to launch your Android virtual machines in the emulator, just run the SDK Setup.exe as before, and select them from the Virtual Devices list.& Alternately, you can launch an emulator directly from the command line.& To do this, browse to your Android SDK folder and open the Tools folder.& Press the Shift key and right-click, and then select Open Command Window Here.
Now enter the following in the Command Prompt, substituting the name of your Android virtual machine for your_device:
emulator @your_device
Create a Shortcut For Your Android
Alternately, right-click on the Emulator.exe in the SDK Tools folder, and select Create Shortcut.
This shortcut would actually only run the emulator in Command Prompt and not load an actual virtual device.& We’ll need to change the properties to do this, so right-click and select Properties.
Select the Shortcut tab, and then scroll to the end of the Target box.& Enter the name of your virtual Android as before, as @your_Android after the emulator.exe, and then click Ok.
Now you can launch your Android directly from your Desktop or Start menu.

Picking the Right Restaurants for You
It’s a very good idea to decide where you want to eat and make reservations well in advance of your vacation (see
below). But how do you pick restaurants before you’ve even arrived in Orlando?

When to Reserve Your Table
All guests can book reservations for Disney resorts 180 days in advance. If you are staying at a Disney-owned resort, you can make reservations (in some cases) up to 189 days in advance (see below).
If you will be staying at a Disney owned-and-operated resort ONLY ( does NOT include , ,
or offsite hotels), you have extra privileges when booking Advance Reservations for dining. Disney resort guests can reserve 180 days in advance of their day of arrival and make up to 10 days of Advance Dining Reservations that same day, either
or by calling (407) WDW-DINE (939-3463). This means that you can conceivably book up to 189 days in advance (for restaurants you are visiting later in your stay). If booking online, you will need your resort reservation number. If calling, you will be asked for your phone number or reservation number. The agent will verify in the system that you have a reservation at a Disney resort. Once that is established, you can make all your Advance Dining Reservations at once, for up to ten days of vacation!

Information and Advice About Advance Dining Reservations
Reserving Online
The information below is especially useful if you plan to book any of the
and/or if you will be traveling at a peak time. If either or both of those situations apply to you, it’s critical to start getting your restaurant bookings set up as early as possible — ideally 180 days in advance.
Before your 180 day mark:
to familiarize yourself with the Disney restaurants and the dining system. For any restaurant that takes reservations, you can click on the restaurant name and then on the resulting page, look in the right hand column for menus. Make a list of your preferred dining locations.
Create a daily itinerary, including which park you will tour and where you plan to eat. These two sites are useful when scheduling your days:

Make a list of all the reservations you need. Put the
restaurants at the top of the list. Pick some alternates in case you can’t get all of your first choices.
If you don’t already have an account set up on , do so (use the “Sign in or Create Account” link in the upper right corner of the site).
If you are staying on Disney property, link your room or package reservation to your account. Log in and go to My Disney Experience at the upper right. Use the pull down menu to select My Reservations and follow the directions from there. The purpose of linking your account is so that you’ll qualify to book Advance Dining Reservations (ADRs) for 180 + 10 days from your arrival date.
Exactly 180 days from the day you check in, be ready to book your preferred dining locations online at 6:00 am ET at
. Booking online gives you a one hour jump over .
Have a credit card ready. ( for a list of locations that require a credit card guarantee.)
Log into your account.
Choose your first restaurant and open the page for it.
You’ll see a blue box marked “Check Availability” on the right, about halfway down the page. Pick your date and number of people in your party.
Promptly at 6:00 am ET, click “Find a Table” and start making your reservations.
Tips and Tricks For Online Booking
The ability to book 180+10 days online, for guests staying on property, is not working consistently on Disney’s new website. If it doesn’t work for you, you’ll have to make your +10 days of reservations by phone at
(407) WDW-DINE (939-3463) starting at 7:00 am ET.
If you can’t get an ADR for one of the more popular locations such as Cinderella’s Royal Table, keep trying each day at the 180 day mark. It is rumored that Disney opens up more tables exactly 180 days prior to the day you want to dine.
You might find better availability for the more popular locations such as Chef Mickey’s, Cinderella’s Royal Table, Le Cellier and 1900 Park Fare if you check starting on the last day of your reservation and work your way backward toward the beginning. Earlier dates get sold out first because people arriving before you whose vacation overlaps your stay grabbed those ADRs during their 180 + 10 window.
Print out a list of your ADR confirmation numbers and bring it with you to each dining location, or save it as a PDF and email it to yourself so you can access it from your smartphone. Better safe than sorry.
Getting Through on the Phone Quickly
The fastest way to make your dining reservations is to use Disney’s .
If for some reason you need or want to use the phone, be aware that hold times can be long when calling Disney’s Dining Reservations department at (407) WDW-DINE (939-3463), particularly first thing in the morning (because of people trying to book super time-critical reservations like ) and 180 days before any major holiday. You’ll usually get through more quickly on weekday evenings after about 8:00 pm ET. The reservations department is open 7:00 am to 11:00 pm ET.
One of the more aggravating aspects of the Dining Reservations phone system is that it tries to force you to respond to a large number of questions before you even reach a person. Those questions are providing demographic and marketing information for Disney. Since you’re making a toll call, our position is that it’s ridiculous for Disney to expect you to pay for its research!
Here’s how to get to a person more quickly. When the system asks if you are already in Orlando and/or need a reservation for the next 7 days, say yes (or press 1). This shaves at least a minute or two off by bypassing the demographic questions. It makes no difference otherwise.
Note that the system is now voice-activated but you can still press  or  in answer to the questions.
Restaurants That Require a Credit Card Guarantee or Prepayment
The following locations require full prepayment in advance, using a credit card. Generally if you don’t cancel them by two days before the event, you get no refund. Check their cancellation terms carefully, as they can change any time.
Cinderella’s Royal Table
Hoop Dee Doo Revue
Spirit of Aloha Luau
Mickey’s Backyard BBQ
As of 10/31/13, all other table-service dining locations that take reservations require a credit card guarantee. Your credit card will be charged $10 per person ($25 per person for Victoria & Albert’s) if you don’t either show up for the reservation or cancel by the previous day. The latest you can cancel and avoid the charge is 11:59 pm Eastern Time of the night before, though there is no one answering the phones after 11:00 pm, so to cancel after that point you would need to do it online.
Note that if some of your party can’t make the reservation, that’s not a problem. As long as at least one person shows up to take the reservation, no one will be charged the fee.
Canceling Reservations
Dining reservations made online can be canceled online or on the phone. Dining reservations made over the phone typically need to be canceled over the phone. To cancel online, log into MyDisneyExperience and if the dining reservation is not already linked to your account, link it using the “link a reservation” feature. You’ll need the confirmation code you were given when you made the reservation. Once your reservation is linked, just click the “cancel reservation” link next to the reservation in question. To cancel over the phone, call (407) WDW-DINE (939-3463) or (407) WDW-CNCL (939-2625).
If you know the same day that you won’t be able to make the reservation, but can make an earlier or later time, you can call the reservation line and ask if there is any availability earlier or later. Typically there is no charge to move the reservation time for the same restaurant. Changing from one restaurant to another, however, will typically incur the cancellation charge.
If you miss your reservation but you are able to get to the restaurant within an hour or two afterward, stop by and explain your circumstances to the Cast Members at the check-in desk. They might waive the fee if you have a really good excuse (sick kid, bus broke down). This is entirely at the management’s discretion. You can also call the dining line and explain the situation, but there are no guarantees that they will waive the fee.
Important tip: Cancelling a Disney resort reservation does not automatically cancel your Advance Dining Reservations! Just because you cancelled your room or package doesn’t mean your dining reservations were cancelled. You will need to cancel each of them separately or face a flurry of no-show fees.
Restaurants You Really Must Book in Advance
If you want to attend the Cinderella’s Royal Table Character Breakfast, it is critical to either
or call (407) WDW-DINE (939-3463) at 7:00 am ET, 180 days in advance. It sells out within minutes each day when reservations open. (Lunch and dinner at Cinderella’s Royal Table sell out quickly, too.) Full prepayment in advance is required for Cinderella’s Royal Table.
The Chef’s Table
at Victoria and Albert’s in the Grand Floridian Resort also sells out every morning, exactly 180 days in advance. There is only one Chef’s Table seating each night and it is not available Wednesdays and Fridays. We recommend you , but you can also call (407) WDW-DINE (939-3463) at 7:00 am ET, 180 days in advance.
Reservations are required for these locations — you will never get a walk-up table (or rarely enough that it’s not worth counting on it):

Also, during the , most table service dining locations will be fully booked up during regular meal times. It is critical to have reservations during that time period! Disney does usually add some extra hours to certain restaurants (i.e, Chef Mickey’s, which is not normally open for lunch, often offers lunch during the Free D other restaurants may have extended hours for lunch), so if you find yourself without a reservation, that might be worth a try.
Reserving Independent Restaurants Directly
Not all restaurants on Disney property are actually run by Disney. All the table-service restaurants at Disney Springs and the Swan & Dolphin are independent, and there are a handful of others scattered around the parks. While all of them can take reservations via the Disney Dining system, many of them also accept reservations directly (or sometimes via ). They may actually have availability even when Disney says they’re sold out, because they allocate a portion of their reservation slots to Disney and keep the rest for themselves. This is especially tr many of these restaurants can easily handle a group of 12 or more, but may not bother to make those tables available through D you have to call to make a group reservation of that size.
One other advantage to booking directly or via OpenTable is that there is no credit-card guarantee or no-show fee to worry about. We don’t advocate making reservations you don’t intend to use, but it’s one less thing to worry about if something happens and you can’t make your reservation.
Some of these restaurants may not actually start taking reservations at 180 days out when you book over the phone. They may ask you to call back later, sometimes as late as 2-4 weeks before arrival.

Can’t get a reservation at the restaurant you want?
Keep trying. People change and cancel dining reservations all the time, so something may open up. If you are staying on Disney property, call every day once you arrive, too.
You may be able to make same-day reservations by calling Dining Reservations from your hotel room (if you are staying at a Disney resort), asking the lobby concierge (again, only at a Disney resort) or by walking up to the podium of the restaurant right after it opens. Don’t expect to get into anyplace that is really popular, however. We tried to get walk-up reservations for the Princess Storybook Lunch in Epcot’s Norway one morning on a very low-season day in January and were told they were fully booked for the whole day!
Try a new restaurant.

Don’t want to make reservations?
Then be prepared for very limited or even zero choices, particularly if you are visiting during a weekend, holiday, summer or Spring Break period (mid-February through mid-April). Don’t count on being able to walk up at ANY of the table-service restaurants in Magic Kingdom or Disney’s Hollywood Studios at any time of year. If you must do walk-up seating, your best bets for table-service dining are:

Restaurant Marrakesh or Spice Road Table lunch & dinner in Epcot’s Morocco

Lounge Meals Without Reservations
Nearly all of the on-property lounges serve meals or snacks, so this is a way to walk up and eat on a first-come, first-served basis. Some lounges offer a full menu from the associated restaurant, while others have only lighter “snack” type options. In general, the
discount is applicable at most Disney-owned lounges (and covers food and all beverages), but Disney’s Dining Plans are not accepted at most lounges. Some of the best bets for a full meal in a lounge are:
Las Ventanas at the Coronado Springs Resort is a small dining room located next to Rix Lounge. It’s open daily for a la carte breakfast and lunch. The food, in keeping with the theme of the resort, is a modern take on classic Latin American flavors. Breakfast includes a variety of omelets and egg dishes and lunch has salads and sandwiches. We haven’t had a chance to try it yet, but the early word is good!
Spice Road Table in the Morocco pavilion of Epcot’s World Showcase offers Mediterranean tapas, desserts and a wide variety of beverages. Offering great views of the lake and Illuminations, this no-reservations option is open the same hours as World Showcase, so a great option for lunch, dinner or snacks.
The outdoor Patio Lounge at The Hollywood Brown Derby Restaurant in Disney’s Hollywood Studios specializes in a wide variety of hearty “small bites” and desserts. It is open the same hours as the restaurant (lunch and dinner).
The California Grill Lounge at California Grill in the Contemporary Resort is a high-end walk-up dinner option. Check in at the California Grill desk on the 2nd floor. Lounge seating begins at 5:00 pm and you can order food in the lounge starting at 5:30 pm. The lounge (which is primarily intended to accommodate people who are waiting for their reserved tables in the actual restaurant) fills up rapidly, so get there early. Don’t count on sauntering up at 8:00 pm, hoping to see the 9:00 fireworks. But if you want access to top-quality food with no reservation and you’re willing to eat early (and off of a low lounge table), this is a great bet.
Tutto Gusto Wine Cellar in the Italy Pavilion of Epcot’s World Showcase offers sharing plates, a few choices of pasta, panini and desserts. In addition, they will often let you order anything off the menu of the neighboring Tutto Italia restaurant. Open for lunch and dinner.
La Cava Del Tequila in the Mexico pavilion of Epcot’s World Showcase has a wide variety of tequilas and tequila beverages (including a massive number of margarita variants), plus a small food menu of mostly snacks like chips and queso and shrimp cocktail. You could make a light meal out of them if you were inclined.
Yak & Yeti Quality Beverages at Animal Kingdom is basically a walk-up window in the side of the Yak & Yeti restaurant, but there is rarely a line and it does sell a few light meal items in addition to cold beverages. Walk around the building to a nice partially-shaded courtyard with a pleasant fountain where you can get some respite from the heat.
The outdoor Lava Lounge at Rainforest Cafe in Disney Springs offers the full Rainforest Cafe restaurant menu plus some exclusive items, with waterfront views. Open at dinner. Does not take Tables in Wonderland. Annual Passholder discount of 10% applies to entrees (not drinks).
Resort Lunches Without Reservations
A few Disney resort table-service restaurants are open at lunch. They are usually not busy in the middle of the day, when most people are in the theme parks. Not only are these usually easy tables to get, they provide a relaxing break from the crowds. Try:
