阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、CD)中,选出最佳。
In UK, Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) (闭路电视) cameras are everywhere. They help the police deal with crimes and keep the streets safe. But that’s not all they do. They also catch people doing very stupid or smart things.
One of the videos is of a British woman Mary Bale. She clearly doesn’t like cats. In 2010 she was caught on CCTV throwing one into a dustbin. The video shows Mary walking down a quiet street. All of a sudden, she notices Lola, the cat, jump onto a fence. Mary stops to pick up Lola and drops her into a large dustbin. Lola was saved fifteen hours later. And Mary was put into prison for causing unnecessary suffering to an animal. She was fined £250 and was not allowed to own pets for five years.
Another video shows “Britain’s drunkest man”. And he’d obviously had a few too many glasses of beer. At about 2 a. m., he was kicked out for being too drunk. So, he decided to walk home. On the way, CCTV cameras filmed him falling down stairs and crossing the roads madly… A hotel waiter said, “It’s amazing he didn’t hurt himself badly.”
Sometimes they also record smart events. Once a British band The Get Out Clause didn’t have any money to make a music video. So, they came up with an unbelievable idea. They set up their instruments and played a song in front of eight CCTV cameras. And then, according to the English Freedom of Information Act, they asked for a copy of all the videos, which they edited. The result is that a totally new music video was made, and it didn’t cost them a penny.
According to the passage, CCTV cameras are everywhere in _______.
D. Britain
Mary Bale was punished for her behavior in several ways EXCEPT _______.
A. She was sent to prison for harm to the cat.
B. She was forbidden to own pets for ever.
C. She was asked to pay a ?50 fine
D. She shall not raise pets for 5 years.
The example of a British drunkest man is aimed to prove that CCTV cameras can _______.
A. help police
B. catch stupid things
C. catch smart things
D. record music events
The British band use the videos of CCTV cameras because _______.
A. they think it is enjoyable
B. they believe it is cool and time-saving
C. they don’t have enough money to make a video
D. they believe they can be well known overnight
Which is the best title for the passage?

B. CCTV Cameras Are Everywhere
C. CCTV Cameras Are Wisely Used
D. CCTV Cameras Are Dangerous To Life

A small, white envelope stuck in our Christmas tree and it has been there for ten years or so.
It all began because my husband Justin hated Christmas—oh, not the true meaning of Christmas. Overspending was one thing, but compared to the difficult experience of choosing gifts---running around at the last minute to get a tie for Uncle Harry or a pair of gloves for Grandma, spending money is nothing.
I decided one year not to buy the usual shirts, sweaters, ties and so on. I reached for something special just for Justin. The new idea came in an unusual way.
Our son Kevin, was wrestling (摔跤) at the junior level. And shortly before Christmas, there was a match against a team sponsored (赞助) by an inner-city church. ur boys were in their blue and gold uniforms and new wrestling shoes while the their youngsters were dressed in such worn-out shoes that shoe strings(带子)seemed to be the only thing holding them together.
As the match began, I was shocked to see that the other team were wrestling without wearing helmets(头盔) to protect their heads. Well, our boys ended up defeating them. We took every weight class.
Justin, seated beside me, shook his head sadly, “I wish just one of them could have won,” he said, “Losing like this could take the heart out of them.” That’s when the idea for his present came. That afternoon, I went to a local sporting goods store and bought different kinds of wrestling helmets and shoes. I sent them to the inner-city church without leaving my name.
On Christmas Eve, I placed the envelope on the tree, the note inside telling Justin what I had done and that was his gift from me. His smile was the brightest thing about Christmas that year and since then the envelope has become the highlight of our Christmas.

C. he spent too much money buying gifts
D. he disliked shopping
We know from the passage that the team sponsored by inner-city church
A. were well dressed

D. feared Kevin’s team
Justin felt sad mainly because the youngsters in the other team _______.
A. didn’t wear any helmets
B. were dressed in worn-out shoes
C. may lose confidence completely
D. failed in the match against his son
The underlined that in the last paragraph refers to _______.
A. the envelop on the tree
B. the note inside the envelop
C. the gifts I sent to church
D. what the writer had done
Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A. A White Envelope
B. A Special Note
C. A Church Gift
D. A Christmas Card
Athens 2004 Paralympics: Biggest and Best Ever
The Paralympics are the games for sports men and women with a disability. They were the idea of Doctor Ludwig Guttman, a doctor working at Stoke Mandeville hospital in the UK. This famous hospital looks after people who can no longer walk, or cannot move at all. After the Second World War, in 1945, the hospital was full of badly injured soldiers. To give them hope, Dr Guttman started the Paralympics in 1948. They were held at the same time as the London O doctors gave out the prizes and nurses were employed as referees(裁判).
The first official Paralympics took place in Rome in 1960, with 400 athletes from 23 countries competing. By 2004 they had become ten times bigger: nearly 4,000 athletes from 140 countries competed in 19 different sports. The youngest competitor was the 11-year-old swimmer Xu Qingqing from China, the oldest, 66-year-old David Williams, a sailor from Canada. The games were a great success for China, the oldest, 66-year-old David Williams, a sailor from Canada. The games were a great success for China, which won 141 medals, 63 of them gold. Britain came second with 94 medals, 35 of them gold. China’s disabled dance team closed the games with a wonderful dance performance.
The games were also a success for the organizers. Ever since the failure of the Paralympics in Atlanta, USA, in 1996, the organizers have been nervous of empty seats. But in Australia in 2000, the Paralympics were shown every day on TV and a million tickets were sold. Fifty thousand Australian schoolchildren were in the stadiums for the Sydney Paralympics, shouting and cheering. However pleased they were by the crowds, some of the competitors found this quite difficult. One blind runner said that for the first 800 meters of the 10,000 meter race he could not hear where the other runners were because of the noise. Whatever his feelings about it, and in Athens 2004 the crowds were even bigger and noisier. When the British team got back to London after the games of 2004, more crowds came to welcome them home. Slowly, the Paralympic athletes are becoming as popular and as famous as the Olympic stars.
The first ever Paralympics were held in _______.
B. Australia
The idea of the first Paralympics was _______.
A. to make the Olympics open to everyone
B. to bring hope to injured soldiers
C. to encourage disabled people to compete for prizes
D. to celebrate the opening of the London Olympics
The Paralympic Games in Atlanta were a failure because _______.
A. only a few tickets were sold
B. they were not shown on TV
C. only a few athletes took part
D. there was too much noise
One runner said the crowds caused a problem because _______.
A. he wasn’t used to crowds
B. he couldn’t hear the other runners
C. he couldn’t hear the referee
D. he couldn’t hear his coach’s orders
From the passage, we can know that the Paralympics _______.
A. are difficult to take place
B. are not welcome to crowds
C. are getting increasingly popular
D. are far less popular than the Summer Olympics.
