McDonald's is the world single biggest food providerwith annual sales of around $12.4bn. And the company's symbol Ronald McDonaldis now (or so the company claims) the word's most recognized person after Santa Claus. The firstMcDonald's restaurant was opened in San Bernardino, California, in 1948 bybrothers Mac and Richard “Dick” McDonald. Mac ran Dick wasthe marketing genius. He had already invented the drive-in laundry and had beenthe first person to use neon lights in advertising. Now he spotted the gap inthe post-war, baby-boom market for cheap, family-orientated restaurants withsimple menus, standardized food and efficient service. After a slowstart, business began to boom. By 1954, the brothers were joined by anotherentrepreneur, a kitchen equipment salesman called Ray A Kroc who owned thefranchise to the Multimixer, milk shake maker used throughout the McDonald'schain. A year later, Kroc had bought the McDonald brothers' chain of 25franchises for the equivalent of around $70m(£44m). Dickremained with the company until the Seventies, when he and Kroc fell out overKroc's claim that the chain was his creation. Today, analmost Stalinist cult of personality surrounds Kroc (who died in 1984) atMcDonald's, while the brothers who gave the company its name have all but beenwritten out of its history. But though Kroc did not found McDonald's, he wascertainly responsible for the empire-building philosophy which led to its worlddomination. He ushered in such essential contributions to international cuisineas the Big Mac (1968) and the EggMcMuffin (1973); and helped launchRonald McDonald —— “in any language he means fun” —— on to television in 1963. Every threehours, a new McDonald's franchise opens so it can be foundin more than 100 countries including India (vegetarian-onlyto avoid offending the non-beef-eating populace) andIsrael (non kosher, despite fierce local objection). McDonald's chain embodied the thrusting, can-dospirit of Fifties America with staff mottoes such as “If you've got time tolean, you've go time to clean.”1. With the start of BBC World Service Television, millions of viewers in Asia and America can now watch the Corporation's news coverage, as well as listen to it. &And of course in Britain listeners and viewers can tune in to two BBC television channels, five BBC national radio services and dozens of local radio station. They are brought sport, comedy, drama, music, news and current affairs, education, religion, parliamentary coverage, children's programmes and films for an annual license fee of £83 per household. It is a remarkable record, stretching back over 70 years - yet the BBC's future is now in doubt. The Corporation will survive as a publicly-funded broadcasting organization, at least for the time being, but its role, its size and its programmes are now the subject of a nation-wide debate in Britain. The debate was launched by the Government, which invited anyone with an opinion of the BBC - including ordinary listeners and viewers - to say what was good or bad about the Corporation, and even whether they thought it was worth keeping. The reason for its inquiry is that the BBC's royal charter runs out in 1996 and it must decide whether to keep the organization as it is, or to make changes. Defenders of the Corporation - of whom there are many - are fond of quoting the American slogan. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. The BBC ain't broke, they say, by which they mean it is not broken (as distinct from the word broke, meaning having no money), so why bother to change it?Yet the BBC will have toks5u change, because the broadcasting world around it is changing. The commercial TV channels - ITV and Channel 4- were required by the Thatcher Government's Broadcasting Act to become more commercial, competing with each other for advertisers, and cutting costs and jobs. But it is the arrival of new satellite channels - funded partly by advertising and partly by viewers' subscriptions - which will bring about the biggest changes in the long term.56. The world famous BBC now faces ________.A. the problem of new coverage &&&&&&&&&&&&&& B. an uncertain prospectC. inquiries by the general public &&&&&&&&&&&&&&& D. shrinkage of audience57. In the passage, which of the following about the BBC is not mentioned as the key issue? A. Extension of its TV service to Far East.B. Programmes as the subject of a nation-wide debate.C. Potentials for further international co-operations.D. Its existence as a broadcasting organization.58. The BBC's royal charter (line 4, paragraph 4) stands for ________.A. the financial support from the royal family&&&&& B. the privileges granted by the QueenC. a contract with the Queen & &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& D. a unique relationship with the royal family59. The foremost reason why the BBC has to readjust itself is no other than ________. A. the emergence of commercial TV channelsB. the enforcement of Broadcasting Act by the governmentC. the urgent necessity to reduce costs and jobsD. the challenge of new satellite channels

() Updated:
Data provided by the National Bureau of Statistics.
Beijing employees earn more on average than others around the country, according to data released by 20 of China's provincial-level regions, while experts are calling for a greater focus on income gaps.
Nine provinces and two provincial-level regions -- Shanghai and Tianjin -- are yet to release income data for 2014.
The average salary of urban employees in Beijing's public sector is 102,268 yuan ($16 475), as much as 1.9 times more than those in the private sector.
The capital is the only provincial-level region to record an annual income of more than 100,000 yuan, which is 2.4 times that of Central China's Henan province (42,179 yuan).
Data provided by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) show the average annual income of urban employees in the non-private sector rose by 9.4 percent year-on-year to 56 339 yuan at a national level. Taking into account price rises, the average salary increased by 7.1 percent.
Urban employees in the private sector earned 36,390 yuan on average, experiencing a growth rate that surged by 11.3 percent, or 9.0 percent in real terms.
Feng Naicai, director of the population and employment department of the NBS, said it's normal from a probability perspective that many people may feel their individual income amount or growth is below the national average level.
"There are a few who earn a lot while the majority earns below average," he added.
Li Shi, an expert in wealth distribution studies at the Beijing Normal University, said China needs to strengthen the reform of wealth distribution and close the income gap, giving priority to middle-and-low income sectors of the population.
