Humberston Happening
LAST NIGHT OF THE PROMS 2014
Our seventh Last Night of the Proms event on the 22nd. November was another outstanding
success. The Lincolnshire Hospitals Band were at their magnificent best as they enthralled and entertained a capacity audience in Thorpe Park’s vast and impressive Show Bar.
We would have to admit a certain amount of apprehension beforehand. Not with audien the demand for tickets had been greater than ever. In fact the volume of sales added to our concern. The Concert’s reputation and success in the previous six years had been largely built
around the immense popularity of the Band’s hugely talented Director of Music, Susan Shorland.
In November 2014 Susan would not be there. Her work commitments had resulted in her standing down from her position with the Band. The fortunes of our Last Night of the Proms concert would
now be in the hands of the Lincolnshire Hospital Band’s new and youthful Director of Music, and condu step up twenty-four year old Paul Jackson.
Our worries
about the wind of change proved to be completely unfounded. The performance of Paul and his wonderful musicians simply blew us all away. They were fantastic. Admittedly Paul had made changes to the previous winning formula, but in doing so he elevated the whole event to a new level. The Lincolnshire Hospitals Band even looked different than before. Gone for the evening were their traditional blue blazers, to be replaced by black suits or skirts, white shirts or blouses and bow ties. They looked a million dollars and proceeded to treat the packed audience to a rich and veritable
feast of music.
Included in their programme were a couple “Under the Double Eagle” and the “Coronation March” from Le Prophete. We had film music from “A Bridge Too Far” and two suites entitled “Little Suite for Brass” and “Crazy Music in the Air”.
In addition there were memorable renditions of “Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again” and “Time To Say Goodbye”, as well as selections of popular music by George Gershwin, Abba and The Beatles, although Paul reminded us that the latter were long before his time and he wasn’t really sure who they were!
A group from the north-west somewhere he suggested, including the old fella who sang badly at the Olympics !
And all this before the rumbustuous Proms finale ! Although the Royal Albert Hall version has often omitted the Fantasia on British Sea Songs in recent years, it was included in the Lincolnshire Hospital Band’s rousing performance, along with Pomp and Circumstance No. 1 and Jerusalem. The appreciative audience responded with lusty singing and energetic flag-waving.
The Band thoroughly deserved the rapturous applause and sent everyone away with the “Lincolnshire Poacher”
encore ringing in their ears.
At the end it is fair to say that a very good night was had by all and over ? 3000 had been raised for the Humberston Park Special School – Hydrotherapy Pool Appeal.
