Insurers tee up reputational risk product as sponsors desert Tiger
By Andrew Edgecliffe-Johnson in New York
Insurers are planning to introduce a new product next year to help companies limit the financial fallout when their brands or high-profile spokespeople such as Tiger Woods suffer reputational damage.
DeWitt Stern, a 110-year-old US insurance broker, has already received expressions of interest from London underwriters about backing a reputational risk product it aims to launch early in 2010.
Scott Brady, DeWitt Stern managing director, told the Financial Times that the product could develop into something akin to directors and officers liability insurance, designed to protect companies from shareholder lawsuits. Over 30 years, &D&O& cover had grown into a multi-billion dollar market, he said.
DeWitt Stern has been working on the product for six months. But the turmoil caused by Mr Woods' admission of infidelity has starkly highlighted companies' vulnerability if the reputations of their brands or pitchmen are struck by scandal.
Accenture, the consultancy, dropped the golfer from its advertising this weekend as other sponsors began to distance themselves from the star.
DeWitt Stern would insist that companies or individuals it covered undertake a pre-screening process, including a detailed questionnaire about the individual's lifestyle, and would attempt to limit the losses from any reputational damage with a crisis communications strategy.
&Crises are not cheap. A reputational event could cost you billions,& said Robbie Vorhaus, a crisis communications executive working with DeWitt Stern. The insurance could also be relevant for ordinary individuals. &In the age of the internet, everybody's reputation is at stake.&

What happened to picking a team and playing a game of football?By&|&The day after Roy Hodgson committed the cardinal sin of using public transport and talking to football supporters, he was due to name England's squad for the matches with San Marino and Poland.Worried that his unguarded conversation with a stranger, which had unfortunately found its way on to the back pages of a national newspaper, had been interpreted as a rather blunt dismissal of Rio Ferdinand’s international future, he sought to clarify his thoughts in more sensitive tones.&Hodgson has always denied saying Ferdinand's career was over and wished to make this clear. He rang Ferdinand’s mobile telephone. No reply. He sent a text message. No reply. An administrator from the Football Association called Ferdinand and left a voicemail. No reply.&Under-mined: Roy Hodgson on a London Tube train where he chatted openly about Rio FerdinandFinally, Adrian Bevington, group communications director and managing director of Club England, contacted Justin Rigby of True North Media Group, who handles Ferdinand’s PR. Bevington was assured Ferdinand understood Hodgson’s position and there were no hard feelings. But still, from the player, silence. So when it is said that Hodgson and Ferdinand had not spoken for 10 months before their meeting on Sunday night, the impression given of a complacent manager, unconcerned with player relationships, is not really the full picture.&Ferdinand was not exactly hanging on the telephone either. That is not the way of the modern footballer. And this is the charge now being laid against Hodgson. That he is not modern. It is not a criticism of his technical thinking. Nobody seems to mind him playing a rigid 4-4-2 against Italy at the European Championship, and England being utterly outclassed. No, the accusation is that Hodgson is not modern enough in his politics. That he does not know how to play the game, to work the system, to spin, to read between the lines, to massage the facts. He thought when a player said he wanted to play for England it meant he wanted to play for England.&Silly Roy, foolish Roy. Did he not know that being picked is no longer a finite initiative, but the first stage of an elaborate courtship ritual in which an England manager has to prove his worth to the player?&Fabio Capello, with his nine league titles and a Champions League winner's medal, could not adequately entice the mighty Ben Foster of West Bromwich Albion to be his reserve goalkeeper, but Hodgson has succeeded.&He has not been as lucky with Ferdinand this time, but you never know. He may yet convince him before the summer internationals. It only remains for Ferdinand to decide which matches he would like to play, and Hodgson can name him in his squad, confident he will almost certainly turn up, for some of it.It is schizophrenic, our attitude to the England team. After Steve McClaren failed to qualify for the 2008 European Championship, Capello was introduced with the public and media as good as baying for blood.&One extreme to the other: Former England bosses McLaren and Capello had differing management stylesThey wanted austerity, authority, they wanted a totalitarian regime. They wanted players punished, run into the ground in training, shut in their rooms the rest of the day, fed starvation rations, cut dead if they stepped out of line. They wanted the manager to be called boss, and the players to be called whatever the hell the manager liked, providing it wasn’t JT or Stevie G or Wazza or Lamps.&And then the 2010 World Cup campaign went knockers up and, overnight, everything changed. Capello was too harsh, too cold, unapproachable and austere. The players needed a cuddle, they needed a beer, some time away, a game of golf, perhaps. We veer between these extremes, the way politics in the Seventies and Eighties lurched between left and right, Arthur Scargill and Margaret Thatcher. There is never a third way. Even if there was, we wouldn't recognise it. Hodgson could have been just that. Too old to be mates, too sensible to be divisive, he was dealt a foul hand, and has played it as best he could. It is still not enough. He should have been cuter, shrewder, a player of politics, a foot in both camps. We wanted Capello to be a brute, now Hodgson is pilloried for not checking in with Ferdinand on a monthly basis just in case he loses five central defenders to injury and his best one retires.&He probably isn't touching base with Peter Crouch much these days either, but if a similar crisis occurred ― Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck, Jermain Defoe, Daniel Sturridge and Andy& Carroll all out ― he may well receive a call.&Precisely how many players should the England manager be kidding to at any one time? On the basis of this injury list, one would imagine about 50: eight goalkeepers, 16 defenders, 16 midfield players, maybe 10 strikers.&Neglect any from this number at your peril. Come on, Roy, make the effort.&Not that they’ll call you back, of course.Don't call me, I'll call you: Hodgson has been taking charge of England training at St George's ParkWhat happened to picking a team and going off to have a game of football? Before the 2002 World Cup, when Sven Goran Eriksson was shown the upmarket arcade of computer games that were to be installed at England's hotel for the amusement of the players, he looked genuinely& perplexed. 'Why can’t they just read a book?' he asked.&Capello was similarly bemused when what any Italian would regard as the standard approach to tournament preparation was interpreted by& England's players as a boot camp.&Yet those who are quickest to& condemn the team as primadonnas in defeat, are then first to shoot the manager if he fails to pander to every precious whim.Sir Alex Ferguson is considered by many to be the master puppeteer behind Ferdinand's withdrawal, yet when Terry Venables was England manager his message to the players was clear. Turn up, and let me deal with your club, he told them. If there is a disagreement, leave it to me. Don't turn up, and I won't blame Ferguson ― I'll blame you.&If Hodgson shares this philosophy, Ferdinand's international career is now at an end, no matter the public pronouncements.Ferguson and Manchester United are the winners here, some have concluded. But is that true? Not if the sense of hurt that followed United’s exit from the Champions League this season is recalled. Many around the club could not understand the glee expressed by rival supporters at their demise.&They seemed almost wounded that many delighted in Nani's sending-off, even though an unjust decision skewed the result in favour of Real Madrid.&United front: There was outrage at Old Trafford following Nani's red card against Real MadridFerguson has commented in the past that the majority do not want Manchester United to win the& Champions League final.&Yet Barcelona are not charged with working actively against Spain’s interests at major tournaments, and Bayern Munich seem to have a healthy relationship with the German national team.&It is easy to join the dots on these occasions. If Ferdinand's withdrawal is a victory for his club and manager, it comes at a reputational cost.&United will trot out the Millwall line ― no-one likes us, we don’t care ― but they seemed to care very much in the aftermath of the Nani decision, as what they term the ABUs (Anyone But United) mocked their misfortune and celebrated unfairness. So really, in this saga, there are no winners. Not Ferdinand, certainly not England, not even United.&The saddest casualty, though, is the expectation the England manager can concentrate on his job without being equally immersed in political machinations, and the stroking of egos.Soon after scoring a hat-trick in the 1966 World Cup final, Geoff Hurst bade farewell to his manager Sir Alf Ramsey with a cheery, 'See you next time.'&'If selected, Geoffrey, if selected,' Ramsey replied.&He wouldn’t have lasted two minutes these days, that man.No guarantees: Even after his World Cup final heroics, Sir Alf made no promises to striker Hurst原文链接:&

问几个翻译的问题:
1.第8段的massage the facts
2.第15段的Too old to be mates, too sensible to be divisive,
3.倒数第六段的Millwall line

Massage the facts,其实和前面那个read between lines的意思类似。前面是说看懂潜台词,这个是说看懂事实下面隐藏的真正含义。
Too old to be mates, too sensible to be divisive
Millwall line 我猜这里是指的米尔沃尔的标语,标语内容就是后面那句。米尔沃尔的足球流氓也是很出名的。
